  • The lego technic Powered Up motors and functions have been used to create a lego technic 3 speed automatic gearbox. With the lego Powered Up functions you can accurately control motor speed and motor position, as well as being able to measure the angular position of a motor. These new possibilities have been used to create a three speed automatic gearbox.
One motor is used to measure the torque at the output of the gearbox by detecting the rotation of an output differential; another motor is used to accurately set the position of an orange rotary catch controlling the switching between three forward gears, and finally one large powered up motor is used to drive the gearbox. The gearbox implements 3 forward speeds at gearing ratios of 1 to 1, 1 to 0.6 and 1 to 0.2 as well as one manual reverse gear.
The Lego Powered Up app has been used to program the gearbox controller on an iphone. Thanks to @racingbrick (racingbrick.com) for providing a great guide to all of the available programming blocks.

man this is cool. could you use the speed difference between the input and output to derive torque instead of having the dedicated motor for it?

Hi wow that;s such a good idea! I had tunnel vision on how to do it - I had a lot of issues tuning the torque measurement and think your suggestion would solve that very well. Thanks!!

Very innovative work! Maybe one could measure (in the app) the rotation rate of the driving XL motor and use the linear relationship between torque and rotation rate to measure the torque... instead of using an additional L motor

It is possible to measure the set speed and compare it to the actual speed of the motor. So in theory it is possible to get rid of the physical torque detector. But I haven't tried that out. The Volvo would be a perfect set to test that.

Great idea - had a few people suggest this now. I totally overlooked it. LOL

These are great suggestions - I think this could work really well. Thanks for your input

Glad to see your foray into PoweredUP components.
I wish Lego would add more components to PoweredUP, such as encoder units that aren't motors, limit switches, downstream data hubs for low-power components, downstream power amplified hubs for motors, both of which so that there are only one controller hub in a build, measured linear actuators, a wider array of sensor types, a tachometer, etc. PoweredUP could be such a nice robotics kit, yet Lego severely limits the system's potential by not releasing components to expand the system into a basic robotics kit.

Hi yeah it's quite cool. Totally agree about the lack of components - would love some small switches and also a small angular position detector.

I am pretty sure the idea is to get people hooked on it so they go and buy mindstorms lol

@@SuperAWaC PoweredUP, Education's Spike Prime, and the newest Mindstorms are all part of the same ecosystem. While Education and Mindstorms might have some additional components, the issue is that the ecosystem is lacking components that'd make the system a decent robotics kit.

Will there be instructions available for this model? This will definitely help me build my robotic hovercraft.

Hi Hydroworld. I am working on an updated version that will be better - I will publish that one.
