The Germans didn't finish development of naval designs before the invasion of the Soviet Union. Once they were fighting on two fronts, three really when you include the Mediterranean & North Africa, they couldn't complete work on Graf Z due to shortages of materiel, engineers, etc. Hitler lost faith in surface combatants after the loses of Graf Spee, Blucher & Bismarck, as well as the damage to Gneisenau & Scharnhorst.

British warships were utilitarian and spare but built for seamanship. The officer corps more likely to attack despite odds and engage while closing distance. The German Navy was instructed to avoid clashes with British capital ships. It’s understandable since Britain started the war with many.

One thing that's always baffled me, is that in order to fold the wings on the BF109s, they had to take the ailerons off first, when taking the planes below to the hanger. Unlike the British Seafires [aka Spitfires], where you could leave them on when folding their wings. As for the JU87s with their fixed undercarriage, they were detached by the crew if the plane had to put down in the sea.

If the Jerry's got this ship built and put to sea with the rest of the combined fleet it would have been a major problem for the Brits. The main aircraft on the Brits many carriers were vary slow bi-wing Sword Fish, Stuka's could have tore those planes up after and even before they went out on their anti ship missions, then they were equipping their carrier with a squadron of ME109's; it would have been a formidable ship.

Your forgetting something you weraboo. British Carriers also had fighters on to them. In addition ME109 and Stukas weren’t carriers aircraft making it extremely hard to land them onto aircraft carriers. Also, how could a nation with no aircraft carrier experience use the aircraft carrier in its correct role. The idea was really dumb, and the British carriers did not suck, with the Germans using British design to make the carrier.

The thing is you know what happened to most German service raiders in 1940-1941? They mostly got stuck in Brest or got sunk. If let’s just say Graf Zeppelin somehow does a successful raid of British shiping then it will end up in Brest. Brest was already getting bombed to bits and it will get bombed even more. The British forces in the channel would be reenforced making a channel dash like what they did irl more harder. Even if they do survive Brest and the Channel dash they would end up in the Baltic or Norway. The best thing the Graf Zeppelin would do is try to hit the artic convoys with there planes. The Graf zeppelin wouldn’t have been a good idea

They didn't have the time, or resources to commit to it by 1940, they needed at least another 6-7 years without being in an active land war to sufficiently build and operate a viable blue water navy.

People seem to think this ship would have been some behemoth. Truth is, outside of the type-21 submarine German naval production between WWI and WWII as well as during WW II was shoddy. Bismarck is exhibit A. She weighs almost as much as an Iowa and does far less with that tonnage. She is slower, less armed and less armored. Her range is greatly reduced in comparison and her AA ability as well as her torpedo resistance are all grossly inferior.
Post war analysis of Prinz Eugen showed that for all of extra tonnage she was not as good a cruiser as the pre-war New Orleans class, which she weighed 25% more than. Indeed, in any gun engagement with a Brooklyn class US light cruiser, Prinz Eugen would likely lose. Destroyers follow the same disparity.
But Graf Zepplin at 33,000 tons she is roughly the same size as an Essex class carrier and she carries one third of the planes. Then if we compare planes. Stuka versus an SBD or later designs is going to be awful for the Germans. F4F, F4U and F6F will eat up navalized bf-109s. Never mind that the Germans had no design at all for a torpedo bomber.
