More, together, the Defence Science and Technology Strategy, introduces the Science, Technology and Research concept, also known as the STaR Shot concept. The STaR Shots focus the national S&T enterprise on Defence objectives to deliver leap-ahead capabilities, while the strategic pillars enable the STaR Shots and support the broader Defence S&T program.
The Agile Command and Control STaR Shot is developing a force-level capability edge at all levels to understand, shape and dominate the future multi-domain battlespace.
Command and Control (C2) is about understanding the environment, and being able to plan and execute operations that achieve a desired effect. A shift from traditional command chains to more dynamic networks that deliver faster and better quality decision-making by exploiting, in real-time, the most relevant information to provide an effect is known as Agile C2.
By harnessing emerging technologies (such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, autonomy, automation and human-machine teaming), high-performance computing capabilities, emerging processes and structures, and our people, this STaR Shot will enable a step-change in C2 capability. It’s about connecting and empowering decision-makers at all levels through the chain from strategy to plan to headquarters to units to individuals to effects.
As a force multiplier, achieving Agile C2 is recognised as one of the most important future challenges and one that is fundamental to success across the conflict continuum. Delivering Agile C2 will enable Australia to prevail in contested, denied and complex environments by allowing greater delegation of authority and faster and better decision-making at unmatched operational tempos.
This STaR Shot will enable the warfighter to connect, make decisions and respond at speed across the spectrum of operations in order to understand, shape and dominate the future battlespace.
