    Something we have done with artwork is to bring it to a nursing home and give it to the residents. When we do this, we bring tape with us so we can tape it up on a wall if the resident would like that. It's a good conversation starter between the children and the residents and the residents usually feel really blessed. It's such a great lesson for kids to learn to value elderly people. :)

    My 3 year old is extremely artistically talented, and drawing is one of his favorite things to do. But I couldn't keep everything, so I ended up throwing most of it away. I hated doing this, but we have a 800 sq ft house, so paper clutter is unacceptable. So I came up with a system that works for us. I take 20 pieces of computer paper, punch holes in the sides, and put it into a 3 ring binder, which we call his "portfolio". This is all the paper he gets for the week (he's more of a drawing type than a crafting type, so regular paper works for us). He has to keep it in the binder unless he's painting on it or cutting it, and it has to go back in once it's dry. Then, at the end of the week, he chooses 3 "masterpieces" to go on the fridge. I bought 3 8x10 frames from the dollar store, took the backs and glass out, and glued magnets to the 4 corners. I can put the 3 chosen pieces behind the frames (the size works perfectly because it covers the holes I punched in the paper) and I can easy switch them out every week, and it actually looks nice on my fridge and not cluttered. When he chooses new ones, the old ones go into another 3 ring binder, where I label and date the pictures for future memories. I then empty out all the rest of the original binder into the trash (I check and make sure there's nothing else in there I want to keep) and replace it with new paper for the week. It works out well because it let's him feel like his artwork is special and appreciated, I can keep some stuff for the future, and I don't have a million papers flying around the house.

    I read a clever suggestion some years ago: select favorite kids' drawings or paintings, cover them with clear contact paper, and use them to line their clothing drawers. They still get to see them, and they're repurposed.

    Thank you so much. I've watched so many UA-cam videos on this topic but most focus on ways of storing the artworks, or simply tell you to get rid of them without explaining the rationale or how to justify this to your kids. You have a sensible and clear approach to living life more simply that I've not found elsewhere, and really appreciate. So glad I found your channel (all the way from Australia!).

    With my kids artwork … if it isn't special to them (or me) throw away... if they like their creation I take a photo with them holding it... if I feel that it shows their talent for their age/or I love what they put together, I date it and put it in a memory box (only several pieces a year!) I also love to display current art and change that up every so often. We've also used the camera-photo idea for large projects (cardboard) that my child created at school (that were huge) and it helped her to part with them.

  • @Katye315
    @Katye315 5 років тому +2

    Implementing an art box here soon!
    My 8 year old is also a creator by nature. She will create every single day, and also wants kits and art supplies for gifts. If she isnt provided with materials, she raids the recycling bin. I love this quality in her but good gravy, we could fill a house with just her art work! We also give a lot a way, and any drawing or paintings, I encourage her to turn it into a card for someone. There is always someone in our church congression that could be blessed by a handmade card from a child.
    Great content on your channel. Totally real life and applicable.

    Could you do a video on trying to be a minimalist when you are not done having babies yet? There’s so much to store in between each baby! Also, a video on managing family paperwork would be helpful (instruction manuals, bills, insurance claim papers, etc.) - it piles up quickly! Loving your outlook and thought process that you share in these videos!

    I’m a new subscriber... so glad you popped up in the suggested column! (I’m almost 50 and an empty nester now!) I appreciate this video for a few reasons: I have a precious few of our kids’ art work actually displayed (my favs). I have 1 bank box each of archived school/art papers. I have photos of some of the art that we parted with. LOVED your suggestions here, and in hindsight I would highly recommend them to anyone in your life stage! That said, with my free time I took up watercolor painting. I did NOT want stacks of paintings all over, so I decided my art would be small and mailable... I make cards (a joy for me) to share the love (put a smile on another’s face) and it’s disposable after the purpose of blessing the receivers... win, win, win! Now...on to paper clutter, my nemesis!!!

    Thank you so so much for doing these videos. I have been on the minimalist journey for about 3 years now and your videos have allowed me to take things to a whole new level. We have 5 girls ages 3, 5, 6, 8, 13 and I could not handle life without minimalism. I don't know if you will ever get this comment but I just wanted to tell you how appreciative and grateful I am of you and what you are doing. Especially giving good clear guidelines instead of just unclear suggestions. We have spent the last 3 days on all of the kids' clothing, including the clothing we have stored away and have 3 huge garbage bags so far. Also the toys. Such a good idea to keep categories. You have taken the anxiety out of all of it for me. Thank you so so much. You are such a blessing. I couldn't handle mom life without this.

    For the art, I will take the pieces that stand out the most and scan them. Then put that photo on Google drive, Dropbox, etc, in a folder organized first by year, then by month. Just sort as they come in and there is no mess or clutter or any needed space lost since it is a free online service. Then down the line you can always print them off as photos or a book through places like Walmart. Maybe give it as a baby shower gift to remind them of when they were little or just as a cute memory book for other occasions.

    I'm so loving this series! We homeschool and have always got art and projects that hang around. One thing I did was get each of my kids a nice binder that zips up. When they come across artwork that they really want to keep, then they can put it in a page protecter and place it in their binder. I have them sign and date it and they have fun looking through them with each other every few months or so and laughing about something they made so long ago and how much they've progressed in their skills. They are also allowed to tape any of their artwork up in their room.

    Not having more to manage!!! Yes! I have always felt iffy about the suggestions to take pictures of beloved items before donating or trashing, etc. but couldn’t put into words why. It’s definitely because I do NOT want something else to manage lol!!

      @TheMinimalMom  5 років тому

      Right?? I think it is a helpful technique for those who struggle with sentimental items, but once past that point, I don't think its helpful! I had found my kids wanting me to take pictures of everything in the past, too, every thing they did, but now we say "lets just save it for the extra special times :)

    I’m the granny now. I still have boxes of my kids stuff to go through so to keep from keeping overwhelmed with all my treasures from my grands , I dated them. Remarked on the back side why they are special and made a notebook with the drop in paper holders. ( not sure what they are called ). If they go to Sunday school with me, I keep it. Date it. Cause I don’t them that often. But the oldest is 8 and I haven’t done a whole book yet. It really helps me. I also put cards they have signed etc. I love your channel.

    I don't have kids of my own yet, but I do have nieces and nephews. I haven't had the chance to do this yet do to extenuating circumstances, but on another website I saw someone who found "shadow box" type picture frames that swing open in the front. They can only hold so many pieces of art in them, and you can change out which is on display, storing the rest behind the displayed piece. I plan on doing this for each kid, allowing them to display their masterpiece, but limiting them to only what can fit in the frame. I may put to the side a couple of pieces here or there that don't fit into the constraints of the frame if it is that important to the child (i.e. we did clay arts and 3D pieces as kids). We'll see how this goes once it is implemented.

    Love your videos!! They are so helpful and to the point and practical. Would love to see a video on how you discipline or guide and teach your kids. My son is 26 months and he constantly pinches his 10 month old brother which I feel from jealousy. I’ve tried teaching Empathy by explaining it hurts and also spending a lot of one on one time with him. I stopped him when I catch him in action but often it’s spur of the moment thing that I cannot prevent. Any suggestions? Thank you! Thank you ☺️

    • @TheMinimalMom
      @TheMinimalMom  5 років тому

      Oh yeah, 26 months is a tough age, you know they know better but there still isn't clear communication! Unfortunately, they're getting some kind of reward from it, whether it is the 10 month old's reaction or yours (which are both warranted, so there isn't really anything you can do about that!). One idea: is there something that they he could be your special helper with? Putting away laundry, unloading the dishwasher. Perhaps if there is another area that he can be getting a reaction from you in, he'd be less likely to look for attention that way? And in the mean time, try and give as little reaction as possible (while still protecting your 10 month old!) to the pinching? The good news: These stages pass pretty quickly! He'll be on to something else before you know it ;)

Im not sure if you have done a video on this but even though I have told myself the trouble to sell things isn’t worth it I DO have items I could sell (real Tupperware for example) but I’m torn. Just donate? Sell and save the money for the sewing machine I want to buy (I sew basically daily)....or use the money for other things? I’ve stopped the flow of stuff into the house but these remaining items (all in a corner in my sewing room)....I just don’t know

    Dear parents!
    When Your kids are very good behaviour all the time and always taking good care of their things, keeping their rooms very clean, loving their favorite things and want to make nice childhood collections of their things: books, clothes, toys, video games, clothes, DVDs and etc, then donataing is very wrong thing to do. If You have few space then storage boxes and shelves will help You out and Your kids will be very happy and thankful then, if they can keep their favourite things. Childhood things are very valuable and it is very sad, if they won’t see them anymore in their life. Every child should have the right to keep their things, if they can take good care of them all the time!!!
    Respectfully,
    Astra Viil

Cheers from France !

    • @TheMinimalMom
      @TheMinimalMom  5 років тому

      Hello France!!! We do take pictures of anything extravagant, our 8 year created a roller coaster model for a project and school, it was rather impressive. I let her keep it on top of her desk for about a week and then asked if she was ready to part with it. In that time she had showed it to all of the grandparents who helped to validate how cool it was and then she was ready to part with it. She has also created many doll houses from Amazon boxes. As long as she is still playing with it I let her keep it, but once it becomes old news, I ask her if she imagines playing with it again or if the fun has worn off of it. Most often she is ready to give it up, once in awhile she isn't and then I wait a little while and ask her again. But in the end, she knows only things that fit in the box can be saved or our house would overflow with her creations :)

    Mail art to church members, especially Sunday school teachers or sweet old ladies who get lonely. Kids art also makes good thank you notes

    What size container did you find worked well? I would need 6 of them and the only place I could think to store them would be under their beds.

    We don’t have a toy room. Instead it’s half of the living room. But it always feels cluttered and since it’s a communal living space I’ve chosen to put each category of toy in a bin and in the basement. We can get those out and play and then put them back.
    I also have a communal office/art and project room. This is the hardest room to manage!! I created a great system for the kids but it seems like there is always projects and paper on the floor I have to step over or walk on.:( any tips for that!? Plus now my daughter is into sewing and making bracelets so we don’t have a place for that stuff now!! She is such a creater. First thing in the morning she wakes up and goes to her art desk. Somehow she doesn’t mind doing art on top if other notebooks or even other projects. I love her creativity. I love to create when I have time too. But I can’t seem to get her to manage stuff well. She just doesn’t put things away. And she just walks over things. Any tips for that?

      Oh my goodness, this is our 8 year old to a T! Creating on top of creations! We *try* and take time after dinner each night to clean up, the kids have zones and then our older two have to clean their desks as well. Sometimes they just pile it up and I have to tell them to actually put the stuff away. It took ALOT of effort on the front end, but now they are getting better at doing it on their own.

    Love your channel. I am a step-mom. It might be really mean or wonderful but since I get the kids all week for school; I send all my kids work towards their momma each Friday. I feel like I am cheating :)

    My oldest daughter gets attached to the creations she makes with Legos, and then doesn't want to take them apart. So I started taking photos, so she "could make it again next time" which has never, ever happened. I am going to talk to her about how the fun is in the process, and not in the end result... she's a stubborn one, so I hope it works!

    Can you do a video on potty training? I am having a power struggle with my 3 yr old son- maybe your philosophy of putting the child in charge of their own stuff would apply?

    • @TheMinimalMom
      @TheMinimalMom  5 років тому

      While I've potty trained 4 now, I can't believe how different they each have been! Our second and fourth were stinkers when it came to this, I knew they knew what they were supposed to be doing but it was like they were intentionally going everywhere BUT the potty just to see what would happen! This is probably not an approach endorsed by experts, but I used candy. If they went on the potty they got candy (and when there were older kids around, they got candy, too, so everyone was encouraging the one being trained so that everyone got some--I'm talking like 3 m&m's, it didn't have to be a huge quantity!) and then when they didn't go where they were supposed to I didn't make a big deal out of it. If it was just #1 I'd clean up any puddle on the floor or couch, but I wouldn't rush to get them into dry clothes. Again, some parents may see this as unkind, but no one likes the feeling of being in wet clothes and I knew at this point they knew how to prevent it from happening and were choosing not to. So I wouldn't rush to change them. If it was #2 I'd have to clean it up right away (ugh). Our fourth really wanted to go back into diapers and I felt like he was just trying to crack me. So when he noticed I wasn't making a big deal out of the messes they quickly loss their allure! I hope this helps a little!!

      For me i had to just stop worrying and stop trying to potty train. I ended up just leaving the potty out for my 3 yr old and eventually she came around and just started using it one day, like every time. As if she was potty trained the whole time.

    I struggle with thinking artwork is waste...the whole throwing things away makes me feel bad (the environmentalist in me) every paper with glue or stickers cannot be recycled and makes my heart hurt as it hits the trash. I may be alone in this idea...and maybe it’s worth it bc kids learn so much through the creative process? Help!

    • @TheMinimalMom
      @TheMinimalMom  5 років тому

      I know, I find myself saying "you haven't used up that WHOLE piece of paper yet!" The kids have dry erase boards at my grandma's house and I thought that would be a better solution, or good old fashioned chalk boards. A little more messy, but probably worth it!

    We keep the really good pieces and the rest we take a photo of along with them holding it and then we hang it on the wall for about a month, and then it’s done.

  • @065176adb

    I agree with a lot of this but I'm not saving their artwork to someday throw it off on them. I'm not just keeping it because they'll be upset if I throw it away. I keep it for myself for my own memories. If there is something they just really want to take with them when they're grown that's fine but I don't intend to get rid of it if not. I don't keep it all or an excessive amount but what I keep is because I want it. BUT I get what you're saying & I agree that it can get out of control if you don't find a good system for managing it.

      Also we have 4 kids so I bought a nice looking filing cabinet with 4 drawers & those serve for each of their keepsake bins. That includes their artwork, schoolwork, momentos, & etc. That's how I keep it under control. 😊

    I was wondering what your thoughts are about baby clothes, books, toys and items. I have 3 kids that are 2 and under and I’ve really been trying to go through their things and simplify them a lot more. Also thank you soo much for all of your videos! They have been a huge help and encouragement to me as I’ve been going through all of our stuff in our home! ❤️🙂

      Good question, I'm not sure if you've seen my video on simplifying kids clothes? This approach could work for any age (adults, too). I would just tell her that we're going to do an experiment and let her pick out a reasonable amount of favorites and then pack the rest away, let her know that they aren't going anywhere and she can get anything out at anytime. And for me, I'd probably offer a reward, if she does this and can keep her clothes in her room organized for a set period of time, she gets something. Hopefully through the process she comes to enjoy the clean room! Just my two cents ;)
