Ive used a few different lights not designed for growing and things do grow but very very slowly
These lights will only be useful for seedlings and over wintering very small plants. They are more 'Propagation lights' not Grow Lights.
Yup. They won’t make plants flower, but they’re great for seedlings, as I mentioned! I hope you subscribe, and thank you for the pointers
Depends on how tall you grow them...
If you bonsai them, it won't take as much light compared to a 20 footer
Thank you!
You're welcome! I hope you subscribe as well.
Nothing at wamart for $9.00! Was just there came home empty handed.
Oh no! I know at my store they are now $15. Stinking inflation. 😖
@@AbundantGardening are they the ones that have only one lightbulb? I don't know if that is enough or you have to put two next to each other. The other ones they had were about $30. And up.
Something like this: www.walmart.com/ip/Hyper-Tough-3200-Lumen-4ft-Slim-LED-Shop-Light/1978917336?fulfillmentIntent=In-store&athbdg=L1600&from=/search
With any led shop light you have to keep the lights about 4-6 inches away from the seedlings
@@AbundantGardening oh thank you so much for taking the time to send me that info. I really appreciate the time it took you!!! Will go to a different Walmart to see if they have it in stock
No problem! I hope you subscribe as well!
But they are not full spectrum lights and plants need full spectrum for good results.
Nope! Not for vegetative growth. Many other gardeners start with just shop lights and work well.
You only need full spectrum for flowering and fruiting.
I hope you subscribe too for more tips and tricks! 😊
But to start seedlings that is all the light they need.
Why not using a candle instead of a growlight? It works...
Candle? It is a fire hazard... And not bright enough
@@AbundantGardening Then what you think about a gas cooker instead of a candle?
Um, no light and could be dangerous. Just need a light for growing veggies or flowers
What about a flamethrower? Easy set up. Max light efficiency!
@@duimelsam lol
Party like its 1979
Got 4500 lumen 5500k 3ft shop lights on clearance from Walmart, 4.50$ each. They grow leafy greens all the way through harvest at 90-95% as effective as my $150 grow lights
Nice! That's awesome to hear, and I love clearance like that on garden items too
You just buyed shitty grow lights without measuring the output I guess
I'm skeptical of that, at least not without actual PAR meter numbers and PPF. I don't see a Shop light outputting more then my 100w and 300w marshydro lights. Seedlings don't really care much as they don't have high light requirements. But i doubt a shoplight is gonna do better then a quality 150 dollar grow light in the terms of overall performance.
Good advice! I like shop lights, and I'm not growing anything for fruit, so here I go, going to get some more shop lights lol
Perfect! You got this
I get it. But I like my super efficient LEDs
Everyone has their own likes! I hope you subscribe for more garden content too
@AbundantGardening Likes and dislikes have no place in science.
I started with eight bulb shop lights on vegetables and moved to cannabis and now I have two high power lights and I use the twelve tube fixtures for side lights in flower stage to bath the sides of the plants my other lights are a 300 watt visosun 300 with percentage adjusting switch. and a spectra vision 600-900 watt dual mode veg switch and flower switch. All together in veg mode with side tubes it runs about 1080 watts. Veg and add 300 for flower mode. Works well. But versatility is key for me I'm always moving lights and set up around raising my lights for optimum growth . .until I get another separate room for flower. I like the visosun 300 watt it has an adjustable intensity switch for 25/50/75/100 percent intensity so I can imitate the natural sun light curve spectrum .for starting babies clones and also for finishing flower. I can go up and down the sun light curve . Works well.
I use Harbor Freight $20 lights for clones.19W, does the trick.
Awesome!
Not even flower and fruit, the only difference between this and high end LED grow lights will mostly be the wattage as the majority of the LEDs are in the white spectrum. They do add additional infrared and UV LEDs sometimes but by and large, the biggest difference is the wattage. These lights do great for clones and low light intensity requirement plants light microgreens and seedlings.\ You might even scale it up for more power, if space allows. That said, the professional growlights do tend to give you more plant available photons per watt so in the long run, it depends on a lot of factors.
Intresting thing, but i dont know if you get the efficiency and and same g/ watt as a bar light.
Much more effective in fact. This only uses 30w of electricity. For me thats a little over 10 cents a day on a 12-14 hour on off cycle
@@AbundantGardening ok its more effective that is wow, but i grow the green ladies and what makes me skeptical is, it uses less watt but does it have the right spectrum for growing? i mean do i reach the same potent/quality level of 25-28% like my Ac infity 730 watt bar light? i mean like 8 piece of it in a 5x5 grow tent. That would be interesting.
Can i use flashlight?
Not really. A led shop light will be more effective and efficient for more plants
I definitely added a LED shop light.
Wheres your heating pad under yhe seedlings
I used an aquarium heater last year to provide ambient heat. This year I have an actual heat mat.
I hope you subscribe!
Good advice I did the same thing! They work for clones to
Good to know!
I hope you sub to see more garden content!
Will it work for grown houseplants? How far does it need to be from the plant?
I just want to grow indoor palm trees.
Unless you get like 20000 lumen ones, they need to be within a foot of the plant. For palm trees, putting them close to a sunny window is a better choice.
The right answer is searching for the DLI of your plant and choose the right height to match the PPF of the DLI of your plant
Plants look crappy
😅
Growers say not to have em close ...i had em close so now I moved mine about 2 feet away
You need to have them close if they are 5000 lumens or less. Anything further than 1 ft will cause legginess and unhealthy seedlings and plants.
I hope you subscribe as well!
@@AbundantGardening thanks ! I have a huge light it holds eight T5 54 watt 6500k bulbs .. I think 2 feet should be perfect ?
Oh yeah! A light that big and bright should be perfect about 1.5-2 ft. Just keep an eye on your plants. If they show signs of light deficiency (light green leaves, longer than usual stems) then move it a little closer, but if not, then perfect!
@@AbundantGardening thanks bro this is so helpful...my first time so u know how it goes
T5 are even cheaper to purchase than LED.
Not in my area. Led is 60-70% CHEAPER than t5 bulbs.
@@AbundantGardening just now purchased a 4 ft LED at sam's club only $20. Now that is a deal!
That sure is!
Well your video is kindergarten knowledge people used shop lights for ages to grow lol
Not really! I've seen soooo many comments on other videos about this topic where people didn't know this. And as you can see, thousands have watched this video. As a beginning gardener, many are told to buy grow lights, not just shop lights. I like to appeal to gardeners of all knowledge types.
I encourage you to check out my channel for other videos, like mulch experiments, and how to stop killing your overwintering perennials or houseplants.
Have a good day!
