I don’t really understand why the cam would tend to walk forward any more than rearward. The cam button may stop a little motion but certainly should not have preload. That said, the button will probably not fail.
The camshaft gear prevents reward movement. So the camshaft can not move rearward. Also there isn't preload on the button it has roughly .006 clearance. It only rides on the button when it moves forward. I've used these in other engine with success, but they do wear over time. Hopefully this helps you. Thanks for watching.

Im not, The LS engines use them but i haven't on any sbc build to date.

Did you leave a rounded end or grind it perfectly flat?
Slightly rounded. Just to prevent a sharp edge.
Man someone could make some $$ if they came up with a better way to do this. I cant stand these cam buttons. They nylon is the best though.
