Hi! I own a GH5 with the 12-35 panasonic lens and a 25mm 0.95 SLR Magic lens. I have loved the m4/3 system for many years as I have also owned the GH4. I am considering the GH7 and the S5iix as an upgrade for my main camera so I can use the GH5 as my B cam. I mainly shoot video but also shoot a ton of photos and would like to add photography services as part of my business. Would you recommend the "X" over the GH7 for this reason? Thanks!!
Fantastic review. I'm getting one for my birthday next month. What cage and ssd attachme t did u use. Please. I also have the omsystem om1 with numerous lens which I'm keeping and using the gh7 for my youtube . What lens should i get the 8-18 pano leica or the oly 8-25. Really can't make up my mind It will be predominantly used for vlogging etc, thanks in advance
I have the smallrig black mamba cage for the gh6, which fits the 7 just fine. The ssd attachment is also smallrig. Both lenses would be great! I'd personally stick to the Lumix brand if it's going to be your main lens most of the time. Honestly, both will work fine though if you prefer a more versatile focal length 😊
@JoeMaranophotography most of it is now much more than I'd ever need tbh! The g9ii is such a great hybrid camera for most people's needs, and then I guess the gh7 is the step above for everyone else
@@MicroFourNerds The G9 is more camera than I need. The only thing I want from the G9Mii is PDAf though DFD is good enough for photography. Mask On Nurse Marty(Ret)
Thanks for the review! Looks like a fantastic hybrid camera. However for my needs it is very overkill so the original G9 with G80 as secondary camera serves me well. For now. 😄
Sounds great, I'll probably get either the GH7 or G9 II in 2 years, if there's nothing better by then. Sticking to my GX80 for now to get a little more experience :)
I was toying with the idea of upgrading to the OM1(ii)but Panasonic seem to have stolen a march. I don't need this model as I'm not at all videocentric, but the G9ii has made my choice more complicated. Oly or.Panny? I just don't know, now...
They're both what I'd consider flagships. The g9ii is the one if you want brilliant photo features (and some really impressive video). The gh7 is if you want all that and some really advanced video features on top 😊
Great video! It's mighty tempting to switch back from L mount to MFT for this, though I suspect that this is a good idea of what the S1H successor will be capable of too. Just wanted to check too, is the VFR 300FPS still manual focus only?
I currently use the OM-1 II for wildlife photography and my interest is wildlife video is growing. The G9II would meet my needs but the one concern I have is overheating. I live on the Texas coast and the heat index during summer is typically well over 100* F/38 * C. Most of my videos would be less than 2 minutes (primarily birds and alligators). Would the active cooling of the GH7 be a benefit in high ambient temperatures vs. the G9II?
I would say that for 2 minute clips I'm the g9ii would be fine. I did an overheating test in my original g9ii and even in baking heatwave direct sunlight, the g9ii managed I think 22 minutes!
The PDAF feature is important, and could impact lens sales. Hopefully this will entice more people to buy AF m43 lenses. Before this model, if you were serious about video, the GH line basically forced using manual lenses because the continuous AF was not reliable. Now, you can be serious about m43 video, AND use AF in some situations. It opens up a market for AF m43 lenses that wasn’t receptive before.
Yeah, I watched that video it was super helpful. I wasn't told about the dummy battery unfortunately or I'd have included it! I'm happy there's a solution 😁
I think the "issue" with the SSD could be due to speed transfers in the USB protocol. USB is a very convoluted format, specially lately with things like USB3.2 version 2 (???), so if the camera port and the SSD port don't match then you would get these kind of errors
I don’t get why they keep making MFT bodies so big. This one's even bigger than a full-frame camera. I know this model is top of the line, but MFT needs more compact bodies like they used to have. The whole point of MFT is portability.
I don't mind it. It's not the camera body that's a pain. It's the lenses and there's no comparison when it comes to MFT. You can fit the camera and all the lenses you need in one bag. With the full frame equivalent, it's much more heavy and cumbersome.
Nice quick review. Everyone is saying that it has the same body as the GH6. But i haven't heard a reviewer say specifically that GH6 cages will fit the GH6 just fine. Will they?
everything can be recorded to the SSD but you need extra power source via the dummy battery lumix sell that has a usb-c connection , so no need for elaborate rigging , a power bank in your pocket will do.
Emily, Im a graphic designer who now gets a fair bit of food and drink video and photo work. I currently own a Sony A7R5, which I mainly use in 1080p at 100fps, shooting vertical for product pans and small bits of movement. Would the GH7 or the G9II be beneficial for someone like me. I did note the GH7 has 32 bit float, which seems a really helpful feature, as I work so fast I sometimes don't have the necessary time to monitor my audio properly. PS: the 1080p is because I only shoot for FB, Insta, and Tiktok.
Gave me the impression that GH7 was supposed to be at the Japan launch but they weren’t ready so it defaulted to just S9 because they were filming commercials for the GH7 at the same time of the S9 launch. It was hidden with the black tape from the footage I saw XD.
Very exciting camera! I have some questions maybe someone can answer. I thought that dual iso cameras apply iso digitally which is why you can change it in post, is it the same with gh7 and dynamic range boost? Is DR boost always on and if not what happens when changing ISO in post, how can you change it when it isn't using both circuits to get that data? Can you record raw to SD card? I feel bad buying this when it's just a hobby for me and some professionals wouldn't even drop this much on a camera :/ But I REALLY want it as an upgrade to my gh4. Still feel like I should just get a used gh5 for 10 bit and some form of ibis, although the newer ibis is also extremely useful for me. Maybe I'll wait for it to come down in price a bit. Or maybe I'll try the gh5, it's what you do with the camera that counts after all!
I didn't get nearly enough time with this camera so I didn't get any low light stuff unfortunately. It is, however, very similar to the G9ii, and I've got plenty of great low light photo and video with that camera over the past year 😊
One of the biggest problems I have with my GH6 is the 1-2second delay between press record and the camera recording. Any improvement on this with the GH7?
@@MicroFourNerds Dang, that would have sold it too me! Thanks for replying :) Still tempted though for AF alone. Have you test the HDMI output for lag, there was some on GH6 which made me avoid using the external monitor for fast moving wildlife?

I doubt it, it's like the old gh6/g9 combo where ones for photo and ones for video... even tho there's a huge crossover
@@MicroFourNerds I'm looking at it like a man and thinking hey that camera can do a lot more for not a lot more!

Thanks for the review! Looks like a fantastic hybrid camera. However for my needs it is very overkill so the original G9 with G80 as secondary camera serves me well. For now. 😄
Please tell me they brought back the battery grip option gh6 was missing
Sounds great, I'll probably get either the GH7 or G9 II in 2 years, if there's nothing better by then. Sticking to my GX80 for now to get a little more experience :)
Great video - well done.
Would like to know if they kept and improved the HI-RES mode for photography, what can you say did you check that out?
Yes you can shoot hand held high res mode on the s9 😊
Thanks for the video! How do the colors compare to the GH6? I’d be looking to match it with my other GH6s if I get one
I was toying with the idea of upgrading to the OM1(ii)but Panasonic seem to have stolen a march. I don't need this model as I'm not at all videocentric, but the G9ii has made my choice more complicated. Oly or.Panny? I just don't know, now...
Haha I feel your pain! I'm taking the OM1ii for a spin later this month on a trip myself!
Quick question pls. Is Gh7 advanced model or G9 mark 2 advanced?
They're both what I'd consider flagships. The g9ii is the one if you want brilliant photo features (and some really impressive video). The gh7 is if you want all that and some really advanced video features on top 😊
How do you get theseRaw settings on fcpx? My fcpx only offers me hdr and sdr settings. Thanks.
Great video! It's mighty tempting to switch back from L mount to MFT for this, though I suspect that this is a good idea of what the S1H successor will be capable of too.
Just wanted to check too, is the VFR 300FPS still manual focus only?
Yes still manual focus for that mode. The 240p has audio and AF though 😊
@@MicroFourNerds Thanks, that's great to hear! 😁
So it seems like I'm getting one to use as my main camera while my E-M5 III will become my secundary camera
@@MicroFourNerds Great, thank you!
let’s hope for a gx9ii with that new AF system and RT LUT 🙏
The PDAF feature is important, and could impact lens sales. Hopefully this will entice more people to buy AF m43 lenses. Before this model, if you were serious about video, the GH line basically forced using manual lenses because the continuous AF was not reliable. Now, you can be serious about m43 video, AND use AF in some situations. It opens up a market for AF m43 lenses that wasn’t receptive before.
Thank you ❤
A real monster..Only one thing I don't understand by lumix: the 3680 point viewfinder. Why? This camera is almost perfect!
Does autofocus perform when using metabones speedbooster with fullframe lenses?
Have you tested the 12-100mm f4 Oly on an G9 II or the GH7? Any significative loss on the autofocus or stabilisation?
The power thing was addressed by Undone. I guess they need a dummy battery to make the beans for 120p SSD recording
I'm pretty sure it's for the IBIS because GH's IBIS is incredible.
I don't mind it. It's not the camera body that's a pain. It's the lenses and there's no comparison when it comes to MFT.
You can fit the camera and all the lenses you need in one bag. With the full frame equivalent, it's much more heavy and cumbersome.
Heat management?
I wouldn’t buy it if it was in some tiny body.
I agree. Maybe it's so they can subsequently make them smaller again and call it progress
Nice quick review. Everyone is saying that it has the same body as the GH6. But i haven't heard a reviewer say specifically that GH6 cages will fit the GH6 just fine. Will they?
That's my gh6 cage in the video 😊
@@MicroFourNerds Oh duh.. same one I have the Small Rig Mamba. How did I not catch that lol. Thanks
I think the G9m2 also has the LUTs, or not?
It does, but a less up to date version. There's no way to dial down the opacity, stack two luts, or to integrate with the new Lumix Lab app (yet! 🤞)
@@MicroFourNerds ok, thanks for the friendly answer
everything can be recorded to the SSD but you need extra power source via the dummy battery lumix sell that has a usb-c connection , so no need for elaborate rigging , a power bank in your pocket will do.
Does it have an ex tele conv mode to crop in when we want to? I dunno if that has been taken out or not as Im still on the ol GH4
Open gate still only 30fps? Is that 5.7 60fps still 17/9?
5.8k open gate is 24 or 30p
4.4k open gate is 48 or 60p
5.7k 60p is still 17:9 yes
@@MicroFourNerds thank you! I was really really hoping for true open gate 48fps at least. Oh well. My gh6 can stop sweating now.
What about Alexa log ?
Lumix didn't tell any of the first reviewers of its existence. In fact it was announced when the embargo lifted, so we were all in the dark haha
Fantastic. May they allow braw some day
Great video
Thank you!! Love your channel 🫶📷 LumixGang!
Dang, I have no reason to need this right now but I am kind of jealous. And I just bought myself an Olympus E-M1 Mark II! Haha
The s5 crop in 4k 50 is 1.5 dear emily
Thanks! I wasn't sure even as I said it haha
Now that it’s got a cf express card, can it clear the buffer faster than the g9ii when you use the fastest burst modes? 7:45
Will batteries or dummy batteries from gh5s work or would i require new uns?
It would require a new one I'm pretty sure, Lumix have brought out a new dummy battery for gh7
Would love to see all this in a small camcorder style body.
Did you try it in low light situations?
I didn't get nearly enough time with this camera so I didn't get any low light stuff unfortunately. It is, however, very similar to the G9ii, and I've got plenty of great low light photo and video with that camera over the past year 😊
Pro res raw and arri logc is what shocked me !!!
Shocked me too - I wasn't told until I heard it in the livestream just now 😂
While recording can you punch in for manual focus?
You can! I assign that to the front custom button, super convenient
What zoom lens are you using on the gh7?
The lumix leica 12-60 2.8-4 - my fave stock lens 😊
One of the biggest problems I have with my GH6 is the 1-2second delay between press record and the camera recording.
Any improvement on this with the GH7?
Unfortunately no. That's a staple on all the high end lumix cameras currently!
@@MicroFourNerds Dang, that would have sold it too me! Thanks for replying :)
Still tempted though for AF alone. Have you test the HDMI output for lag, there was some on GH6 which made me avoid using the external monitor for fast moving wildlife?
I'm starting to seriously regret leaving M43 for full frame
You are always welcome back to the fold.

Can’t the gh6 do ProRes raw internally with the firmware updates? Only asking because I own one
No it will he just a GH7 feature. The GH6 can shoot ProRes internally, but not ProRes Raw
