Yep that's basically what the concept of "devouring" is. Learning from what both you and your opponent's can do and make decisions based on that or like with isagi adapt based on that. This mentality will be even more prevalent when the manga progresses since it's gonna tackle stuff like what if you played with your idol and things like that, would you be able to devour them or just be at awe?
Not really spoiler tho but after watching Barou's scene along with soundtrack, now I am very eager to watch those *certain plays* of Rin, Shidou, Aiku, Prince 🔥🔥

Agreed, compare the animation last episodes to episode 1's and the difference is clear as day. They should've just stopped at episode 12 and broadcast a second cour months after the first one so they could maintain that same quality
