So glad I found this video, I almost sold my TR-8 to help fund my Octatrack which would have been a shame now I know how well you can control it with the Octatrack. Thanks for the tip.
I use the Assignable 1-2 outputs for the kick and the other for the snare. the main stereo out is is for the rest. Both the snare and kick go thru separate compressors.
that's great info!, actually you can use any external sequencer to do it (NI Maschine) for example. You can go even further with simulating 'motion recording'. If you use external sequencer and set up midi in/out the way you send midi CC from tr8 to the sequencer (so you can record them), and also midi out so the sequencer will be playing those CC's back to the tr8. In this way, when you want to do proper motion recording live, you just press RECORD on the sequencer, make movement on tr8 and stop recording. voila! the knob movements you just did where recorded onto the midi track on sequencer and are played back, so instead of manually programming everything in MENU, you just do it live like on tr8s. The idea on video is great, but it takes away 'live/performance' approach from tr8, you just use it as a sound module, and for many folks this is not what they want, as the 'hands on' idea of the instrument is very important. Anyway big thanks for explaining this, as for triple 16th notes, velocity or any other things you cannot do directly on tr8, this is very refreshing. Summarizing, I think the ideal setup would be utilizing both, tr8 on its own, but also vie the sequencer to do more 'funky' stuff if the tr8 sequencer is not able to perform that.
Awesome! I learned a lot from watching this. I upgraded from a t8 to a TR8s recently. Definitely picked up a lot of useful tips here. My first live set is next week and I owe a lot to your well produced Elektron videos. any time someone has a quandary on the Octatrack Facebook group I recommend your videos for their clear and concise content. Thanks Halution!!!
informative video, thanks, since the TR-8 receives all MIDI data on only 1 midi channel, what happens when the Octatrack send a CC value? will the Octatrack effect ALL MIDI notes sequenced or pinpoint just the one drum instrument intended? i.e. send a CC to just the snare without effecting any other MIDI notes? thank you
I just realized that I actually undersold the potential in this video. There's polyphony after all, which means that you can have a kick a snare and a hat playing simultaneously on one trig and if you pair it with a bass synth, you can build relationships between the kick and the bass using trig conditions!
Wowzers the speed adjustment all opens 808 trap possibilities...neat! Bought my tr8 like a month before they announced the tr8s I still think it’s a good drum machine and I use a volca sample to supplement it. Thanks for the midi implementation explanations! Imma go turn that thang on and get to work
the fun starts if you use the 8 midi tracks of the octatrack only for one tr8. so you can mute with midi mute the tr8 and midi arpeg and midi lfo quasi for each instrument of tr8.
That could almost be overkill :) I'd argue that 4 midi tracks is all you really need on the OT. Keeping in mind that the OT has 4 note polyphony, means that you can have 4 TR8 instruments playing per trig on a given track and 4 tracks gives you 4 arpeggiators, 12 LFO's and 40 different CC messages to choose from. Then you can use the other 4 tracks for other midi instruments and for example tie your drums and your bass instruments together with trig conditions. That's insane! Oh, and the price drop is one thing stopping me from selling my RYTM: I bought my MK1 new in December 2016, if I sold it now, I'd lose 500 EUR!
yes true. but i got a few octas here so i got the luxury to use one only for sequenzing the tr8. this almost tripples the value of this roland drum machine:) and u can use the midi track mute cc of the octa with an external midi controller because the damned tr8 got no ccable track mute. and thats really good. goodis like lfoing the decay and the velocity of a 909 chh and like you showed also arpegiating it on some steps is so sweet. i tried also the digitakt but no midi lfo (or only one cant remember well) and no arpeg.
This was fantastic. I've owned both for years but didn't bother trying the TR8 MIDI implementation until I saw this. Question: Are you able to tap into the TR8's reverb and delay capability for particular voices (eg add the TR8's own reverb to the snare)? I can see that there is a cc mapping for reverb and delay but I'm not sure how to get it to work on a particular TR8 voice. The alternative I'm guessing would be to run the voice through the TR8's assignable outs and into the OT as a Thru Machine then use the OT's delay or reverb.
I mean I couldn't even figure out how to use that reverb on the TR8 itself, not to mention trying to sequence it via CC. The second option looks like the way to go.
Sweet! Thanks man. I've got Digitone and TR8s so this was helpful. One question. If TR8s is being controlled through one channel how come arpegiator only effects hihats and not bass drum and snare? Thanks!
Hi, great tips in here! I have both, the OT & TR8. I have to say that the simplicity of the TR8 is what makes it a great. I don’t see the point on getting a TR8S if you have the sampling capabilities of the OT.
The reason why I'm thinking of the TR8S is the fact that TR8 gets a bit boring sonically after a while; the fact that you can plug in an additional effect (e.g.a filter) per track on the TR8S means that you have a wider palette of sounds. And with the OT as a drum machine, the primary limitation is only 4 outputs / no Overbridge which means that mixing drum sounds after you record them is more challenging. USB audio streaming works wonderfully on the TR8, in fact much better than Overbridge I' say.
Hey...I´m not sure if i understand your last words right......if you do it that way....are you able to send the pattern you created on the Octatrack sequencer per USB-MIDI from the TR-8 into a DAW ? So that you have the full length of the 64 steps as a midi track in your DAW and be able to change individuel sounds in that midi track??
Thanks for watching. Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. I meant that the TR8 works as an audio interface, so you can record all channels separately into a DAW (similar to Overbridge on the Analog Rytm). I tested that and it worked.
Hi! Sorry for a late reply. To be honest, the DIGITAKT's midi functionality is very similar to the Octatrack. The only noticeable differences are a single LFO per track and -- correct me if I'm wrong -- a lack of arpeggiator. You can still assign multiple tracks to the same midi channel and get more LFO's. The only possible limitation is modulating an LFO by another LFO; something that the Octatrack does quite well. The lack of an arp means that one functionality that I presented in this video would not be available on the Digitakt.
for me the point is you cant set steps with the ot to trigger tr8s delay and reverb. that sucks. the arpeggio and the midi lfo are great. i would love to trigger the midi ccs of the octatrack with an external midi controller. but thats only possible if one is in midi mode on the ot. that sucks.
Just curious, since you’ve owned a RYTM for a while, what are your thoughts on analog drums versus digital/samples? The Volca Kick is the only drum analog drum machine I’ve owned. How important is analog to you? Also, how do analog drums sit in the mix? Do you find the Roland’s versatility trumps “analog”? I’m sort of looking for a dedicated drum machine with a quick workflow to complement my Digitakt and to have something to back me up for bass and guitar practice/tracks. I love samplers, but I often think a dedicated drum machine would be nice.
That's really a tough one; on one hand I really love how "sticky" the kickdrum is on the RYTM but, on the other hand, it's absolutely crucial for me tune my kicks precisely and the RYTM makes it kinda difficult to tune. From yet another angle, I found that when playing around with the TR8 I was tempted to "support" its kick drum with an analog kick from the Analog 4. Another point of view that many of my friends who produce good techno is that each and every time when preparing a set they feel the need to support an analog kick with a sample to really punch through the mix and also, I find it necessary to run my RYTM through an overdrive to make sit in the mix. I know I'm rambling, but that's a really tough topic 😂
Yeah, trying to do my best in a second language :) I honestly have never even touched the Beatstep, so hard to tell. Maybe try checking in the manual if it has CC support.
Super straightforward! Simply select the input channel on the TR8 and then select the same channel on the OT's MIDI sequencer (remember to press your data knob to confirm!) and you're all set. I think it responds to notes starting from C2.

Yes, the OT is notoriously bad at Note Off. I'd put another trig with a p-locked 0 velocity (or a p-locked zero volume cc message) after the problematic note to reset the sound engine.

A note on message consists of 3 bytes which means, this message takes nearly 1 ms to transmit. 8 "simultaneous" note-ons thus take 8 ms. The 8 notes that should happen at the same time will thus not really happen simultaneously but play sequentially. At 120 bpm the last of those 8 notes will play roughly 1/256 note after the first.

I'll probably make a video soon on why I want to sell my RYTM, but you're probably right swapping it for a TR8s is more of an impulse than a reasonable decision :)
I'd try to look for a good used deal on a TR-8 and add it to your set up. Both the TR-8 and TR-8S are nice gear, no doubt. But in december I had to make the decision between TR-8 and Digitakt and not even a minute I regretted buying the Digitakt.
Hi!! Can you please tell me if korg volca beats and volca sample listens to midi notes the same way as tr8? They're cheaper, and I could load many drum sounds in the case of the sampler. Thank you!
The sample has a separate midi channel for every sample so it's a bit different. Makes it possible to really go crazy with CC control though. The BEATS works similarly, I believe, but do check MIDI Implementation chart to see what you can actually control via CC. I believe that there aren't too many parameters there.
I'd need to look into it a bit more, but as I believe we agreed previously, we're both more interested in Behringer's original instruments than the clones :)
Great Video. Puts Roland to shame really. The TR8 sequencer is shockingly poor/basic. No programmable pattern chains other than holding down a whole batch of patterns. No probability and no trig conditions. Hardly earth shattering to implement either.
Thanks for watching. I actually don't mind the simplicity of the built-in sequencer. However hard they try, they couldn't compete with the genius of Swedish sequencers (I'm hearing that OP-Z is equally if not more brilliant).
Thanks to HICUT CAKE at ua-cam.com/users/hicutcake for lending me the TR8!
Always happy to help! :)

super helpful, thanks. Looking to maybe add a TR-8S with my Deluge and you just proved that's a great idea :)
Never had a longer session with the Deluge. I’m not strong with grid-based sequencers, but I’m hearing great things. I’m sure they’re gonna pair well.
Love my TR8 - Running into MX1...Now!!! I have reasons to make the jump to OT. 👍
Be warned! It's a gateway drug to the Elektron ecosystem :))) Keep in mind that you can do the same with a Digitakt too.
the workflow on the Electrons is pain in ass.. i'm just letting you know.

Hi, well do is it taking one channel to the elektron ? how many channel midi on the octatrack ? thanks a lot for these tips !
I’m also thinking of the octa and tr-08s combo.
Yeah. I might pull the trigger on it soon, so I'll be making videos on how it works out.
this is something I would very much look forward to. I found this video helpful. I'm impressed!
amazing midi remote control !

Sweet! Thanks man. I've got Digitone and TR8s so this was helpful. One question. If TR8s is being controlled through one channel how come arpegiator only effects hihats and not bass drum and snare? Thanks!

Hi, great tips in here!

I have to say that the simplicity of the TR8 is what makes it a great.
I don’t see the point on getting a TR8S if you have the sampling capabilities of the OT.
Having the OT control the TR8(s) via MIDI allows you to free up the OT's audio tracks to do other things.

HalutioN Yeah, definitely a tough question. I’m still thinking it all through myself.
Hi! Are you using latest OT firmaware? I'd love to update mine, but I'm afraid of UI bugs. Any issue there with yours?
how many midi channels on OT you need to use for tr-8? great tutorial btw
just 1 i believe
cool video, thanks. although you do use the word 'immediately' a lot.
do you think similar effect can be achieved via the Beatstep Pro?
Yeah, trying to do my best in a second language :) I honestly have never even touched the Beatstep, so hard to tell. Maybe try checking in the manual if it has CC support.
HalutioN hey I'm teasing. Enjoy your work, keep it up! Thanks for the comment will do
what are the midi settings to connect the octatrack to tr8?
Super straightforward! Simply select the input channel on the TR8 and then select the same channel on the OT's MIDI sequencer (remember to press your data knob to confirm!) and you're all set. I think it responds to notes starting from C2.
Just came back to re-watch this video. Do you believe the same or similar usability can be achieved using the Digitone?
I haven't tried the DIGITONE yet, but if it has the same midi sequencer as the Digitakt, then hell yes. It's limited to four tracks only, though, so that's something to keep in mind.
@@LateNightBeatsOfficial But it has an arpeggiator :)
cool best combo! I wonder if you can control de FX of the TR8 on the octatrack?
thanx for the data shared
Yes, you can; e.g. cc 89-91 for reverb parameters.
I own both octatrack mk2 and tr8, trying to sequence tr8 by sending midi beat notes. The problem I'm experiencing is that sometimes note goes off. Have searched the web and found out that octatrack has weird behaviour of sending 0 velocity Note On messages instead of proper Note Off messages at the end of MIDI notes. Is there any fix this ?
Yes, the OT is notoriously bad at Note Off. I'd put another trig with a p-locked 0 velocity (or a p-locked zero volume cc message) after the problematic note to reset the sound engine.
So could do all this with my DAW instead of using the Elektron?
Of course; I'm not sure which DAW has built-in LFO's though (Reason?), but everything else should work brilliantly.
Awesome.
Thanks!
I loved TR-8 and tried to match it with the MPC-1000 and the OT but I sold it for one reason - it's not possible to change patterns via midi while you change them with the OT which is crucial in live situation. Later I attempted playing drums only from the OT but it was really hard to memorize/systematize (also: you've got to be much more precise if you don't want to cut start or end point of drum samples). Finally Nord Drum 2 was something good - first class sound, small and handy, but in studio... man! i mean - only left and right channell? Such a nice drum synth and such a shame. good work and useful instruction, I use a tempest alongside the OT and enjoy the synergy- ive got a few jams on my channel if you're interested.
Thanks for watching! Cool jam!
What about the old rule that you never should sequence drums using such a slow protocol as MIDI?
I must be too young, cause I've never heard it before 🤔From my experience the audio interface latency is always more problematic than midi latency. Can you elaborate?
Too call it a rule is a bit of an exaggeration to be honest.
I was just talking about MIDI's slow data rate which prevents two events from really happening at the same time.
You might not hear it when just two sounds happen simultaneously, but program all TR8 sounds on the same spot on an external sequencer and then for comparison on the TR8's internal one and I guess you will notice an audible difference.

I'd need to look into it a bit more, but as I believe we agreed previously, we're both more interested in Behringer's original instruments than the clones :)
lol i just got a rtytm
and was planning on selling my tr8...it's just too oldschool, I like being able to save the settings of everything.
