Why I wasn’t more interested in this band back in the day, I don’t know. I saw them live back in ‘75 and I enjoyed the concert, albeit being stoned out of my mind, but back then they weren’t my favorite. Now, as of a few days ago, watching their 1970s live performances on UA-cam, I have a whole new appreciation for this very talented band! I’m 66.
Saw this band perform live in concert in the early 70's. Outstanding! They put on one of the best live performances I ever saw, and I saw a lot of the very famous bands. Most bands didn't hold a candle to Black Oak Arkansas in a live performance, trust me on that.
God bless the good ole southern boys who gave us southern rock and also bless the original members of BOA the 70s mainstream southern rock pioneers who brought the sound up north. Yes , I am a Yankee and like thousands of us, we love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@TheBrooklynbodine he may have been born in Michigan I'm not sure. I never heard that before. I'm from caraway Arkansas and all of his family is from around here. They just took the name black oak which is the next town over from us. They just thought it sounded cool. The mangrums as well as tommy aldridge have been here all my life. Tommy was actually the real rock star around here. He played in other big bands. He played for ozzy in the randy Rhoads days. One of the best drummers that was from around here. Jim lives around millington now rite out side of memphis. So does most of the band.
To the person who posted this video: I want to say THANK YOU! I was born and raised and lived in Oakland until about three months ago, and my grandparents were close friends with the band. My grandfather Chuck Keckhaver drove trucks for a countless number of rock bands in the 70's and 80's, and granted they both were in the same little town, Black Oak was one of them. They ended up being part of our family, more or less I guess you'd say hehe- Anyway what I wanted to sah is that if you have any
I own part of that land they show in the film and am thinking of moving up there and building a house. I bought a Black Oak Album in the 70's and inside the album was a deed to one square inch of land in Black Oak Arkansas. I plan to build a house that is half a square inch, so I can have a yard and grow pot on the other half inch.
beautiful part of the country,,, in the Ozarks mountains ,,real laid back ,,God's country,, from about 140 miles away in West Memphis Arkansas i travel everyday with my last stop being about 20 miles away,,, eould love to retire up there in about 10 years,, people don't get in your business unless you let !!!! but where there from is Black Oak,, about 90 miles south,,nothing but farm land,, blink and you miss it,,,
@mushroomking11 You could go there and plant a vegetable or herb (of any kind you like) on your square inch. Then come back at the end of growing season to harvest it and enjoy. Just a thought.
FYI: The guy opening the fence at 1:23 was a good friend of mine when we both lived in middle/west Arkansas. We both had fast cars and raced up and down the streets. I also played bass in some night clubs around town, so i was connected to music. I had a '55 chevy and he had a new '68/69 396 Camaro and a '57 panel wagon. His dad retired as he owned a service station and moved back to the northern area of Arkansas on the White River. He bought an Inn he used to own and Danny was a fishing guide. Then next time I heard he was Tour Manager for Black Oak Arkansas. Some of our friends had been up to see him. Another Danny and I with a couple girls drove up there one time on a whim, but they were out on tour. (no cell phones back then) If you read this Danny, what's sup?
To answer your question, in a word, no. I've lived here all my life, on the same lake, 20 minutes by boat, 40 by road. I've been there when they lived there and since. One of my best friends was a roadie for them in the late 70's/early 80's. It's since been converted into a resort, Black Oak Resort in Oakland, Arkansas, you can google it. The owners went in and really fixed it up. Still a nice area. Has grown since then, but still an abundance of privacy as the area is off the beaten path
I met BoA in 1973 at a little-known place (at the time) called Lost Bridge Village (near the tiny town of Garfield). The band was looking for a place to hang for a while and chose LBV. Seemed like okay guys just looking to live life. One of them even played my old acoustic guitar. Go, Jimmy Dandy!
yeah northern arkansas, southern missouri, ozark country. a real odd mixture of people, used to be remote, don't know anymore a lot of fancy lake communities i'm sure are taking over, there was a huge push by developers to sell land nationwide. most definitely a beautiful area.
tomitstube still pretty remote I live in Yellville 20 miles in the opposite direction from Mountain Home.Yellville is the county seat in Marion county and we still don't have a red light!! But after working in Atlanta for years this is nice and a great place to raise children, come on over the doors always open...
Black oak Arkansas is to rock n roll what breathing is to life...its a necessity..their way of doing it is of the same bloodline as lynyrd skynyrd...pure sweet and when necessary kick ass music...B.O.A. and SKYNYRD...AND THEN CAME THE REST
They remind me of the Grateful Dead with respect to the notion that one must experience their live show to truly appreciate the entertainment value of the band. I live in Washington State and saw Black Oak Arkansas locally in the early 70's. I caught a piece of Jim Dandy's busted up washboard. I still have it to this day.
This is from "All You Need Is Love: The History of American Popular Music" by Tony Phillips. Great documentary series from the mid 70s. I really recommend people watch it if you can find it somewhere ...
I lived in Mountain Home back in the 70's and I remember seeing Ruby Starr in the Walmart one evening. It was cool, she was just there shopping, no one bothering her, as it should be. My father in law, (at the time), set the water well pump for Black Oak at their resort. He said it was like a commune, lots of kids running around there.
I hauled trash In Oakland Arkansas for a year and black oak was my Tuesday stop and I had no damn idea that it was associated with the actual band. DAMMIT!!
0:16 That's what it looked like back in the day coming up on one ski when you had maybe 120 horsepower pulling you up. The skier worked as hard as the motor until the boat finally got going.
I saw them at Panther Hal in Ft.Worth 1970..(I was 5)I always thought they were cool, I just didn't know how cool they really were.Thanx for posting this!!
My sister and I stayed in the cabins at Black Oak about 15 or more years ago, nuthin fancy at that time. The person who bought the land told us the story and about the fire ( the original cabins are all gone), burnt down one night. Highly suspicious fire and they never did find the arsonist. Shortly afterward the owner was trying to sell each individual cabin and I don’t think that panned out. There is a resort there now with a much improved look. I saw Black Oak Arkansas so many times during the 70s till about the late 80s or very early 90s when they were back playing to small crowds in bars. I also have lots of their old vinyl albums from the first album to the one album with the song Delta Water. I also remember when this video came out. Ruby Starr had property across the road

things were different back in the 1970's. communal and environmental living wasn't considered to be a right or left thing, it was anti-establishment thing for most young people, a better way of life, they talk about not being influenced by gov't (at the time "gov't" was shipping their friends to die in vietnam) but they did have a socialistic idealism about society. religion wasn't so divisive back then either, you'd see left wing religious socialists all over the place. you can see how the elitists divide and conquer.

Most underrated southern rock band of that era
My first concert! They opened for Ted Nugent ❤️
Right on!
They’re literally probably the only southern rock band I personally think kicks ass. The only one I like

My FIRST Rock and Roll Concert in Colorado Springs, CO. about 1971 or so. Loved it! Was when "Jim Dandy to the Rescue was popular. :)

What cool guys, living close to nature and being self-reliant. Living the dream. Good musicians too.
Smoked a joint with Jim dandy outside of a small club they were playing at in new jersey. Super nice guy!

What year is this?Smoking a joint with Dandy.

I lost mine. Made the dumbass mistake of lending it to a friend. Scummy bastard never gave it back.
I guess i should have taken it out of the sleeve.
So ahead of their time. People are just now starting to "get" this whole idea of how to live off the grid, grow their own food and so forth.
I think the only vegetables that they grew up there were the kind you smoke.
People have been doing that forever. They were called farmers or agriculturists. Later communes were established as well.
Like when your electric windows in the car don't work and you wish they would invent a handle you could just turn to make it go up and down.
totally cool...i never would have thought jim dandy was like this..i had no idea the band was like this...very cool
Commitment, devotion, love, trust, inspiration. Dizzying, the possibilities.

Words of wisdom from rocks elder syatesman
Teamwork makes the Dreamwork! These families are beautiul.Righteous! Down to Earth people.

He would have been considered slightly left wing in the seventies but he sounds like a conservative patriot today!!
I relate to that.
When they first came out they were solid now they are fat and extremely sloppy😅
We live close by each other he's just a good man I'm proud to call my friend
