I have used alcohol as a drench for root mealies as well. Alcohol fixes everything in many ways lol. And yes! Please make a "Hoya people" series! I always hear so much about these mythical people and don't know anything about them (except for the few on Facebook). I would love to learn more 😊
Yup! This is my experience only, so take it for what it's worth. I got so frustrated trying to treat root mealies with pesticide and failing that I soil drenched with straight alcohol. To my surprise the plant did absolutely fine and the root mealies were gone. I've since done it with several different types of hoya and had no ill effects, and the root mealies have been eliminated.
Hi Miro😌🙌You need yellow sticky traps. Cut them into small pieces and lay them in the Hoya pots. After a week you should have trapped all the adult mealy bugs, so any left in the pots can be isolated and killed with a cotton bud and alcohol. Change the sticky traps every month. I tend to distribute them (not in all my pots) but in every second pot. I haven't had any mealbugs at all, neither mites. I really do recommend the sticky traps.
Ohmmmmmmmm 👌🏻 Miro you’re taking this all way better than I would.. Thank you for taking us along and showing us that pests are not the end of the world.
It can be overwhelming cleaning our plants collection of pests. I spray alcohol everywhere in my room yes smell alcohol as i open my room now it’s doesn’t bother in fact i like it lol makes me feel i am disinfected as well. I love your Hoya collection never get tired watching new and old content of Hoya. Thank you for your hard work Miro keep sharing and inspiring us🥰😍💕💖🤗
I feel you! Also trying to keep on top of my mealy bug infestation. Sometimes think to swap the hoya growing to mealy bug farming, to have more success!
Fun fact: mealybugs are dried, crushed and used as red dye in many common foods and drinks labeled as "carmine" on the nutrition label in the ingredients list 🤗
Mealy bugs have been out of control this year in my part of Canada. I just glanced at my cabinet, and I spotted one taking a leisurely stroll on the glass shelf. I'm pretty sure it spotted me. It's on!!!
@@soniacastro2837 I have it. I do not grow this Hoya well, it hates me, I hate it, I suffer, I cry, I pray to Gods, it makes no difference. Thank you for sharing your cute plants and mealie treatment. That was a lot of work, lets hope they get scared and stay away! Looking forward to see what you’ll do with your cabinets 🪴 Loving the Hoyas in bloom part 🌸
I do as you do with alcohol and cotton swabs. But it seemed like my battle went on for at least 6 months. Then a woman at a nursery asked me if I'd ever used diatomaceous earth for mealies. I had not. BUT I had some on hand. I did purchase a little powder spray bottle off amazon. So after going over my plants as thoroughly as I thought possible, then I filled the little bottle with the diatomaceous earth, and began spraying little puffs of the DE all around the soil, under leaves, on stems, etc. Diatomaceous earth actually is like crystalized fossils that slice and dice and drain the bug juices out of the mealies. I did this weekly for a month...and so far, I "think" or "hope" they are gone. It's been a couple months now. But I still check for them each time I water my hoyas.
So, I was listening to lets talk Hoya and they recommended Pure Crop for mealies on the episode with Doug Chamberlain- and he said he was also under water with mealies also. So I heard that it actually worked great with his collection, so I thought I’d give it a try. It’s amazing! It works super well and I had no leaf casualties. I first did it as a foliar spray and then followed up with root soak and it’s amazing!!
Heyyy 🙂 I do exatly what you do but after the alcohol dries a spray with my secret formula and let that dry. If I missed any eggs the first time, I repeat the process in a week or so when I notice those babies, but since they're infertile, that's usually it. That's been my experience anyways. I had no trouble with the audio at the end. I was noticibly 4K at the beginning. Very nice. Some absolutely hilarious one-liners. Love your sense of humor. Much love as always, R
I just Googled 'how mealy bugs spread. When young & weightless, they can be spread in the air by a draft!!! This explains sooo much. Apparently, I'm really lucky ALL my plants aren't infested, as I've had 3 plants infected in the past 2 years but was able to catch it early each time. Used alcohol on cotton swab.
I totally get it! My Hoyas had root mealies earlier this year and I ended up having to chop and restart everything. It was hard not to just throw stuff out.
That unhinged moment was well deserved! Like, I am fine if they attack my cheaper plants but the rarities?! Do they not know of honour? I knooow, mealies are just a mystery of the universe. They don't subject themselves to laws of physics and nature, they come from nothing, disappear completely and then come from nothing again.
I have had minor leaf drop with diluted neem oil, 70% Isopropyl alcohol, peppermint and tea tree castille soap. I do a preventative pest treatment biannual. So far so good. 😊
I have one Hoya fungi pink and I wipe it down once a week with alcohol and water hoping I won’t see one. I hope you will rid your plants of those nasty bugs 1:06:54
I hate mealies, I treated my Culantro plant for week and it was a lost battle. I just composted. Even through out the pot. Haven’t tried growing it anymore. Right now I’m dealing with what I believe is flat mites. Thank god I have a small Hoya collection about 14 not counting props. 😊 but I do have other plants and I’m praying they don’t get it. Waiting on my suffer for treatment. I also have captain jack. I’ll try everything.😅
I am not sure if Captain Jack will work on mites since that is spinosad as active ingreditent I believe. That will work wonders for thrips though! For mites, you want abamectin as active ingredient, or you can go the sulphur route. You can also use oil (but NOT with sulphur) or predators. I hope that helps! :)
Mealy bugs! I lifted a tiny pot out of a tiny cover pot and found a very large Earwig!! How? It was in a pot in my Milsbo cabinet that is almost completely sealed…it had to make it past the door from outside, travel through the house and find the cabinet and then make it inside. No outside plants have even been brought in the house yet. I’m afraid to lift anymore plants since I’m leaving for 3 weeks cross country to Vancouver for 3 weeks. In 3 weeks I suspect a half a dozen earwigs could eat through the whole lot! 😅
Re: being a hawk for mealies. I’m seeing a grain of salt- mealy! A tiny piece of paper towel- mealy! Worst is a glistening drop of water on a plant can appear white to me- mealy! But of course I almost never see them when I look for them until there are a bunch 😐
Oh damn, mealybugs are the worst. I am so lazy, and just toss the plant, and then later buy the same one again lol. I have a small collection though, but still bleck to fuzzy white bugs.
I just used mosquito spray, but I need to ensure that there are no jumping spiders or wasps on the plant and remove them before spraying. i don't want to harm the good guys 😆😆
AAHHHH! Me too Miro! I’ve been inspecting Hoyas literally all day! I finally had a chance to chill out for just a few minutes, I didn’t even get to finished watering all my plants. My infestation wasn’t too bad but if I hadn’t checked them, it probably would have been. Those little suckers were annihilated! (hopefully) First my Undulata, then my Callistophylla, then my Finlaysonii, then my Welsh Zoo! I started to use a qtip with alcohol but then I decided to spray them with a 3 in 1 insecticide (miticide) and I threw in some systemic granules. I’ll be spraying with some isopropyl alcohol in a couple of days, I’m not playing around with these little boogers…I figured I’d much rather deal with mealies than thrips because thrips can live inside your plants tissue for a while before emerging. I better shut my mouth, I may jinx myself, I have never dealt with thrips! I will have to recheck my Hoyas next weekend as well to see if any babies have emerged. Its been a while since I’ve had to deal with anything other than an occasional spider mite so I guess I was due. I can totally sympathize with you! I am exhausted! WOW! I just put another few Hoyas on my list…🫢 There’s something about fuzzy flowers that I find to be GORGEOUS!!
My eyes are so bad I use a magnifying glass to inspect for bugs and still I'm not too sure of what I see. So, if I think I see mealy bugs, I give them a good spray of a combo of water, soap, alcohol and peroxide. They don't seem to mind the bath. I've read that mealies lay eggs in the soil so the soil needs treatment as well.
Crossing fingers you don't have mealy bugs (my bad i was still at the beginning of the video)but if you do not a lot. The battle has begun in my house. Today, found some in my Heuschkeliana variegata 😤😭 Question isn't it easier to just dunk the leaves and vines in alcohol? You're so patient!
I haven't, since there are many buffering videos :) But you need CalMag (or you can get buffering solution but it is also CalMag lol). If you get buffering solution, follow instructions, if you get just regular CalMag as fertilizer, use 1.5x strength and make sure all coco is soaked and water is covering it. I leave it for 24 hours, and then I empty all the water and do it all once again. :)
Wow, ok I ordered just the cal mag so I will do that. I wonder now how many fails I’ve had as far as good growth have been bcuz I wasn’t doing this. Learning 😅
So, how DO you keep Thripse in check? They are giving me a hell of a time. They can fly and no spray I can find in plant stores actually helps. They just make the leaves look grimey and sticky :/ I only have mealy bugs on 2 of my orchids. I was dumb enough to buy two incredibly discounted orchids that had mealy bugs thinking I could get them under control. Well, I'm almost there, but it has been a battle of almost half a year now. But the Thripse has plagued my plants for years, so I would prefer mealy bugs if I had to choose :/ I also feel that the danage caused by Thripse is far worse.
I use spinosad. It is very effective for thrips - one spraying is all it took for me last time. We will see how it goes this time around! Oh no, TRUST ME, you would NOT prefer mealybugs :(
haha :D Yes, if I see mealies on a plant, I will first wipe clean with Q tip and then spray with alcohol. If I don't see mealies on the plant but it has been in proximity of an infested plant, then I will only spray.

Yup! This is my experience only, so take it for what it's worth. I got so frustrated trying to treat root mealies with pesticide and failing that I soil drenched with straight alcohol.
