The Tragic Death of William McKinley and the 1901 G.A.R. National Encampment

In September of 1901, Cleveland was on the threshold of a new era. 36 years after the conclusion of the Civil War, the Forest City was given the honor of hosting the 35th National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic. Civil War veteran, former Ohio governor, and current president of the United States William McKinley was scheduled to speak at the Encampment. However, tragic events in Buffalo, New York would not only shatter these plans, but would impact the entire nation.
