Previously, the Guangdong Police Dept. used traditional helicopters to do maritime patrols, but helicopters have limited carrying capacity and are expensive to maintain. So they looked to the CW-25DE UAV to perform the intelligence gathering tasks that a traditional helicopter would do.
The CW-25DE VTOL UAV has 30x zoom optical camera and thermal camera that transmits live images back to the command center day and night and has a range of up to 100 kilometers. Its artificial intelligence will allow for automated deployment and machine interpretation of potential smuggling activity below. The drone is also designed to withstand high winds and often rainy weather at sea, and is capable of taking off and landing from a ground position or from a ship.
"Not only does the drone give public security a cheaper option for surveying waters than a helicopter, but the former is also easier to launch and maintain. It is very difficult to detect by smugglers and keeps ships out of harm's way," said Liu, captain of Guangdong's police department.
"The CW-25DE is of great use in surveying vessels of interest in the vicinity. We can easily see how such a system would be useful for any future anti-piracy or anti-smuggling operations." said Liu.
