    Hi Gail, I love watching your videos! This one is very good. I am using the attachment to bind some placemats. The binding is getting wrinkles in it. I'm sewing a straight line, so no curves. I have an L890.

    • @GailPatriceDesign

      Hi Connie, If the binding strip is woven, is it cut on the bias? Sometimes even if you're binding a straight edge, straight of grain binding might wrinkle. If your binding fabric is a knit, it might need SSI Stay Tape to be more manageable as it feeds through the binder attachment. (The stay tape is available here: www.gailpatrice.com/product-page/more-than-extremely-fine-ssi-knit-stay-tape). Thanks for watching and if you need more help let me know!

    Great tip, even for those of us who use different machines. One key I see is that you’re handling the neckline and binding very gently so it doesn’t stretch out in odd places. Thanks for the tip.

    • @GailPatriceDesign

      Hi Constance, You're correct. How we handle fabric as we stitch is equally as important as having the correct machine settings. Light fingers and hands to guide the fabric is key as it goes under the foot and not pulling the fabric in back of the foot will help prevent skipped stitches. Thanks for watching Serger Tip Clips!

    Very tempting to purchase. I also wondered how the binding is applied to a tee. My first thought would be to add the binding to the front and to the back, and then sew the shoulder seams. If you have a different approach, I hope you will make the video soon! I do appreciate your willingness to share your expertise.

    Hi Gail, I loved your video about this binder attachment. I just purchased it and have used it several times. It is almost like magic. I am wondering if you could give me some tips on putting a binding on a placemat. This obviously necessitates making a rounded corner the other direction. Is this possible, and if so, what is the technique that you would use to accomplish this task? I look forward to your answer - I am hoping to make them this weekend.

    • @GailPatriceDesign
      @GailPatriceDesign  11 місяців тому

      Hi Yolanda, Follow the same instructions in the video tutorial. If you have the clear curve foot (C23) snap it on the machine. As you approach the round corners, Lighten the presser foot pressure to "3". Keep the palcemat edge positioned right against the binding. The lighter presser foot pressure will make it easier to maneuver.. When you stitch to within a few inches of your starting point, trim the end of the binding so that there is about 1/2" to overlap the starting point. And continue around the placemat. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have more questions.

    Hi Gail, I loved watching this video and your other videos, they are very helpful! I am currently using a Baby Lock Euphoria with their binder attachment to sew a tank top made of a knit 100% cotton. However, I can't quite seem to get the stitches around the neck binding to be as even as yours are in this video (aligned at the same distance from the edge). The neck line on my tank top is circular(curve) and I notice the stitches slide slightly "off track" after passing the deepest part of the neck line. Since you're not supposed to tug the fabric while passing it through the binder attachment tool, I am not sure how to get rid of this offset of stitching while sewing the binding... Do you have any tips on how to resolve this issue?

    • @GailPatriceDesign
      @GailPatriceDesign  2 місяці тому

      Hi, Binding around a deep curve is tricky and takes practice. It is probably a handling problem. (I know...it's never our fault!) With your left hand, as you are stitching around the deep part of the curve, keep encouraging the neckline to stay right against the binder. and stitch slowly. And practicing on scrap fabrics is a good way to get the feel for it. I usually cut practice curves that are exactly the same as the garment and practice strips for binding and stitch them. Don't let your binding strip hand off your sewing surface. It can stretch and distort which will also throw off the stitching. Let me know if these suggestions help and if not, we can revisit the problem together. Thanks!

    Thank you for your instructional videos. I learn so much.
    Would you suggest using the single fold binder when using it on knits and using a knit binding fabric since it will reduce bulk and knits don’t fray?

    • @GailPatriceDesign
      @GailPatriceDesign  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Rebecca, You can use either the single fold or double fold binder on knits. It's a personal preference and the thickness of the edge that's being bound or the binding thickness will influence your choice.For instance, on a sweatshirt weight fabric, a single fold binding would create less bulk, but on an ITY knit, a double fold will build in more stability on a neckline. For woven fabric necklines, I'd probably select the double fold. Let me know if you have more questions and thanks for watching!

    Great video. I just picked up the attachment and adaptor. It was amazingly easy on a somewhat stable cotton knit. I tried it applying it on the neckline cut on grain and again with the neckline cut on the bias. Perfection! When I tried it on a four way Lycra knit I got ripples in the binding whether the binding was cut on grain or on the bias. What’s the trick with Lycra? Looking forward to your answer.

    Can you use woven fabric, if so does it need to be hais?

    • @GailPatriceDesign
      @GailPatriceDesign  2 роки тому

      Yes, you can use woven fabric but it does need to be cut on the bias. When woven binding isn't cut on the bias, it doesn't conform smoothly to a curved edge. A jewel neckline or crewneck needs to stretch to pop over your head, so a woven binding probably won't stretch enough for that. But it's great on scoop necklines or if a smaller neck opening has a button or zipper closure. Great question and thanks for watching!

      Thank you, I was truly hoping it could work, but I had my doubts. I ❤ my L890, but I’m not great about using the coverstitch alone to attach FOE. I’m making the Love Notions Tranquil Nightgown that has a crossover detail that I like. I’m using rayon Jersey, so it’s thin (and breathable) but I wanted the FOE instead of a knit binding. @@alispriebe3972 Rayon jersey is so comfortable especially in warm, humid weather. However, it can be temperamental as it is very unstable. If you decide to use it for binding on a future project, I’d suggest fusing SSI Knit stay tape to the wrong side of the binding strip. It works like a miracle. I’ve had yucky results with double brushed polyester binding , but when I used the stay tape it behaved perfectly. If you scroll back on my UA-cam videos, you’ll see it. • @GailPatriceDesign
      @GailPatriceDesign  2 роки тому

      Usually I cut the knit binding strip crosswise (stretchiest direction). But I've also cut stripes on the bias and like the appearance as long as there is enough stretch. If you're binding a scoop neckline that doesn't have to stretch to pop over you head, cut it in any direction, but do a test first to see if you like the look. Let me know if you have more questions and thanks for watching Serger Tip Clips!

      @@janandstevedubois7356 Don't stretch the binding strip and keep light hands on the neckline as it travels through the binder. You might want to stabilize the neckline with SSI Knit Stay Tape. It's available on my website but won't add any bulk or be visible from the public side.It's also excellent for very stretchy, unstable knit binding strips. If you have enough of your garment fabric, make a sample neckline and test with the SSI tape or knit interfacing and see if it makes a difference. @@GailPatriceDesign Thank you so much with your help Gail. I tried stabiliser on the neck edge and on the binding. The neckline was still all loose and looked stretched out and floppy. I thought about how, when you make a neck band in the round and attach it to a t-shirt neckline, you make the band about 80 percent smaller than the neck of the garment, and slightly stretch the band to fit the neck hole, so that it all lies nice and flat when completed. SO, I then tried again with the binder and marked 2 points on the binding that were 80 percent smaller than the neck edge. I fed the binding in and coverstitched a few inches to check all was lined up, until I got to the first mark, then I fed in the neck edge, and started to slightly stretch the binding as it went through the binder, stretching it about the same as I would for a neck band. I aimed to get to the edge of the garment neck at about the 2nd mark on the binding. It worked perfectly! I didn't use a stay tape or anything, but the neckline has good stretch to get over my head, but the double binding gives it enough support and keeps it in shape. I know this is not the recommendation for binding a neckline, but I just can't get it to look good and not all floppy and streched out, if I don't add a bit of stretch to the binding. Can you foresee any problems in the long run with with me doing it this way? Or should I keep trying to get it right without slightly stretching the binding like I would a neckband? If using a neckband I do stabilse the neck edge, but all the layers in the double fold binding seem to hold it perfectly without. Perhaps later I will try again with stay tape on the neck line as well!
