I’ve been to many weddings. Opening seating makes me stressed. I want to make sure I’m sitting with friends and family. I’m saving chairs, or counting to make sure we can all fit at a table. With seating charts, it takes the guest work out of it.
Bruh open seating is very stressful. I'll show up early for an event to get a seat I want, and some person will save like 4+ chairs for their friends who show up late, and I'm sure that person is stressed by having to tell everyone who comes by that the chairs are taken lol
The way I wrote my guest list really helped me make my seating chart! As I wrote my guest list, I would group families together and friend groups together. Once I had my list, I broke it up into 10 person tables
I've still just slowly starting the planning with WeddingWire and building the guest list there is cool because you can create groups some are already listed like "your family" "their family" "your friends" "their friends" etc. but you can make more too and I've willing to bet that it will help lots more when we do more planning and seating is something my fiance and I start talking about
Something kind of unconventional my brother did to save money was have a guest list for the sit down dinner & a separate one for friends to come and party after dinner worked great! They had a nacho bar for them
My cousin didn’t have a seating chart at her wedding. It wasn’t as stressful as some others are saying they’ve experienced. But I think it was a missed opportunity because our family did NOT sit with his family. Lol. We just sat with who we were most comfortable with - people we already knew. Some forced mingling is nice in my opinion.
My venue said that I don’t need to make place cards or anything like that! They have waiters that come and find each person and personally escorts them to their table and double checks their order since it’s a plated meal! So cool and I’ve never seen anyone else do it!
Expect no shows. Things won’t be perfect. It’ll be fine. I had about 7 no shows that I didn’t know about until the day before or day of out of 130. Just have to let it go and not worry too much about the seating chart.
Hard pass on the “list people by table.” It created a HORRIBLE bottleneck at my friend’s wedding. So unless you only have like 4 tables… I personally think listing names alphabetically is more efficient. I decided to place individual namecards out on a seating chart table, and have guests take their namecard WITH them when they went. That way guests behind them found their names from a shrinking pool of namecards, which made the process faster and faster.
One of my closest friend's figured out her seating placement by writing everyone's name on a post-it note and then mapping out the room. I am stealing this trick for my own seating plan. Also to avoid the far away seating and family politics, my fiance and I are going to be at a sweetheart table in the middle on the room. Thank you Jamie for the extra tips!
Wow I had no idea there were so many rules to this. I wonder if guests ever consider that the couple is already stressed as it is and for one day, even if you don't like cousin so and so, just suck it up and be nice?
I agree. It's nice if the bride and groom work out seating so you sit with people you like, but I am not going to throw a fit if I sit with someone I don't like or even strongly dislike. It's just a dinner, and as long as you also sit with one of more people that you can get along with you can suck it up for a few hours.
Exactly!!! It's only a few hours, and you'll likely be on the dance floor for some of that time, so it's ok! I'm so excited to have open seating at my wedding, honestly 😂 it'll be a casual wedding, but we'll have a few tables reserved for family, and everyone else can figure it out and enjoy the ice cream bar 🤷♀️
I'm not engaged yet, my boyfriend and I are planning for the end of this year, but I've been binging your videos and I'm so ready to plan our wedding lol
Hi Jamie! Fellow wedding planner here and am so glad you're offering this education! Just wanted to pop in to comment that, in my experience, escort cards communicate table assignment while place cards communicate seat assignment and meal selection :)
Got married almost 6 months ago and I still watch. You have helped me in so so many areas during my planning for my big day with all of your awesome tips and for that I say thank you so much. Greetings from Guyana 🇬🇾.
Open seating in my experience was horrible. My brother had it at his wedding and people were scattered among different tables because they didn’t want to sit with other strangers. Then other people would be standing forever because they didn’t know where to sit 🤦🏾♀️ assigned tables is so much easier
I'm not even engaged (yet), but any of your videos that seem helpful of ideas I had not considered is added to a playlist titled (wedding tips & ideas)... and I already have a good handful of your videos on that list. This one is on that list as well.
It stresses me out when people say they don’t have a seating plan. I’ve never been to a wedding without one but I just can’t imagine it. Trying to squeeze myself onto a table? No thanks!
I’ve never been to a wedding that has had a seating chart, and it’s stressed me out every single time. Deciding the seating arrangements was honestly one of the hardest parts of wedding planning process and we struggled to try and get the numbers even or try to figure out how to group people. It makes me feel better to know that they don't have to be perfect!
I did mine super early to figure out how many tables I needed with uneven groups thought it was too early but so glad the advice is to be early with it :D
Wedding is about a month away and thank god I found this video and we are just now putting together the seating chart. I am very much like, "I'm sorry, don't think I love you guys any less by where I'm putting you." I just...this is where the numbers are falling. Just yeah. I'm so happy that you said it was okay!
Also!! One of your early videos on cutting cost you said that if you have a seating chart you don’t need escort cards. That video was amazing!! So was this one!! Thank you for all your help
Thank you for the reassurance about non-perfect tables, Jamie! And also the piece about not feeling super responsible for every guest's experience! 😌 You are a life-saver
Hi Jamie! I would love a video about things to do at receptions other than dancing. I'm having a causal-ish morning/brunch wedding, so we aren't wanting to do a lot of dancing, but we also don't want the reception to be boring.
Hi Jamie! I've noticed that you consistently refer to the dancing part of the reception as a given aspect, which for most people it totally is! But my fiance and I are planning an afternoon reception on the front lawn of the church we're having the ceremony in - which doesn't really lend itself to a dance party! Would it be possible to do a video about a reception timeline or activities for couples who aren't planning on having dancing? Thank you! Also, thank you so so much for these videos, they are making me feel so much more organized!!! I'm looking forward to using the Master Plan too when we get a little closer to the date (we're still a little over 2 years out!).
Have you had your wedding yet? If so, how did it go? What was your schedule/reception like? We're not big dancers, so it's hard to picture a big dance party when we won't really be out dancing.
I just want to say that you! I have watched all of your videos, even before I was engaged, and now I am 4 months out from my wedding. This was well needed as I was just thinking of how to go about doing this! So thank you! All the way from Michigan!!
Almost 4 months away so this is perfect timing for this as we sent invites out in a week or two! Thank you as always for a balance of entertaining and informative content.
Oh the awkward table. My boyfriend and I are going to get married when I graduate and he admittedly was going to propose this year but wasn’t able to get to the jewelry store to buy a ring before everything closed. We have so many little sub groups of 2-5 and we’re aiming for 12 seat tables. This video really helped me calm the stress about it😅
I just got married Saturday 1st of feb AU and I did good side of the family to on side of dance floor and pain in the ass family on the other side. We put people we talk to most in front and people talk to less at the back also put kids away from dance floor just in case of spills could end up on dance floor. We did seating chart and bonboneries as our name tags at the seats
Hi Jamie, we are doing open seating as it’s a shorter party with buffet style food but not at an meal time, and it would have been cool if there were more tips on how to make unassigned seating work. I think I’ll just have one table reserved for our family and then the rest of the guests can sit where they like. We want to encourage dancing anyway.
Good video, was thinking bridal party tables next to head table then family tables but I like your idea of switching it better. (Puts the fun closer to the dance floor).

Craigslist. FB marketplace. If you really want to make your own stuff, joann fabrics and michaels, but only if you have coupons and when things are on sale. Dollar tree. Goodwill. Thrift shops. If you are spending a lot of money on florals, you really don’t need to spend much on decor items. Let the flowers do their thing. Keep it simple and you’ll have less to clean up and pack afterwards.
Also, make sure to find out from your venue how many people at maximum can fit at each table! At my venue we could fit 12 at a table but at my sister’s venue the max was 10
Hi! Any tips on how to plan a wedding in four months? Not the ideal situation but something we are going to do. I don't want it to feel like a thrown together wedding.
Hi Jamie! So, my own wedding is going to be the first wedding I've attended. I was just wondering could you possibly do a wedding checklist video? So what you need for a wedding. I know some things you've mentioned about not being necessary but maybe you could do a budget version and non budget version? So one has even some things that dont matter and one has just what matters x
I'm attending my first wedding next week but my own wedding will come after that as we have no family left to be married before then (they're all older and married or children) I'm the youngest adult. I would love a video of a wedding checklist of what is needed from the basics and the most important to the little things.
Can you give advice about making a digital space for all this info? I think it would be cool to have a website that has ALL the info prior to the wedding. (hotels, photos, seating charts, menu, rsvp). That way everyone has their information beforehand. Has anyone tried this?
From my experience I would go assigned seats. My parents once got stuck at a table with two feuding families and they had to sit at opposite ends of the table because the families wouldn't sit near eachother.
To chart or not to chart...that is still the question...i feel like i want a combo, where some of its assigned especially when it comes to my elders in my family...while also making it to where people can mostly sit with who they like
How do you feel about a cocktail/ hors d’oeuvre type reception rather than the plated dinner reception? This would be mentioned on the invitation and would only be about 3-4 hours.
@@JamieWolfer hahaha is life as an entrepreneur ever any different!? 🤣🤙its a beautiful thing. This deep dive into seating charts was perfect timing as we are thinking about this next!
This is crazy on time. My wedding is in a week but I think why I've been hesitant is what if I have last minute changes on the seating chart but it's already printed out. How can I update it where it doesn't look tacky
This is a fantastic and informative video! Best advice I’ve gotten in wedding planning so far! Video idea from a nerdy human: do you have a lot of experience with themed weddings? We are doing a Harry Potter themed wedding on Halloween 2020, we want tons of HP but also keeping it classy. What are some common themes you see and fun ways to execute them in a realistic way? Pinterest can be a lot...
Some ideas iff the top of my head - you can incorporate HP through color scheme - each house per table (long tables if your venue has enough room for it), seating chart - divide people in houses and add sorting hat at the top of the seating chart, decorate the ceiling to resemble Hogwarts, serve butter beer (or potion signature coctails), train ticket 3/4 wedding invitations...You don't need to overwhelm all the guests, but true HP fans will notice the details :)
Okay I am so glad you made this video because I had to come back to it because we are doing a seating chart and I was so struggling with the awkward table and not offending anyone 🤣 Thank you for making me feel normal 😅
I’m so sad because I wanted to nominate my fiancé and I for the wedding planning but we live in Jersey 😞 I was so excited and then when you guys said Southern California, my heart broke lol. Love your spirit and personality though. I’m praying that whoever wins will be as amazing as you are. ❤️
Do you help your clients decide where the DJ will be set up? Or do you leave that up to the DJ? The reason him asking it's because for DJ's it is easier if the older crowd is away from the speakers.
This is ssoooooo helpful! I'm not here yet but five months out (Ahhh!) and I'm going to start at least grouping people together on our guest list now and follow up as we get closer
Notes: do wedding cards EARLY, consider cards or seating chart (2?), Seating = bride and groom, bridal party, family, friends (maybe use this as a general rule?), Accept the awkward table situation
I went to a wedding with open seating and we grabbed the only seats available by the time we got up from the cocktail hour. Turns out it was right next to my ex and (who I was not on great terms with) and his new gf. My fiancé was not thrilled, made for a very awkward night 😂
I actually started working on my seating chart today so this was great. I wish you would have covered this on the video but that’s ok... what about kids tables???
In the UK, it’s traditional to have a head table with the bride and groom, their parents and then the best man and moh and then have the bridal party at their own table
Thanks I was wondering about being a few odd people at certain tables, because of just the amount of people, I didn’t want to have an extra table for like 3 people🙄
90 % of our guests will be family members. Both my fiances and my last name start with Bo... And we both have really big families. If we sort escort charts alphabetically by last name there will be 50 + cards in a row with Bo... on it... So, won't work for us:D
Hi Jamie! I love your videos! I was wondering if you had any suggestions for brides who might not be big dancers or don't want everyone watching them dance? #IntrovertBrideProblems
First of all, I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL. I have watched every single video and it has been beyond helpful! Thank you for doing what you do. I’m getting married in 201 days and I would love to see some videos about the week of the wedding, or day of the wedding tips and tricks. I have all of my vendors and am mostly set up! I just want to make sure I am not missing any of the last minute details. What are some things that have to wait until the week of and how do you navigate that week? Thank you!!! 😍
Wish you would have covered more on the technicality of make seating charts (software to use, where to print, recommended material to print on, DIY vs store-printed, etc.).
I’ve been to many weddings. Opening seating makes me stressed. I want to make sure I’m sitting with friends and family. I’m saving chairs, or counting to make sure we can all fit at a table. With seating charts, it takes the guest work out of it.

@@JamieWolfer hahaha is life as an entrepreneur ever any different!? 🤣🤙its a beautiful thing. This deep dive into seating charts was perfect timing as we are thinking about this next!
Thank you so much Jamie! What about seating charts for long table seating? We are thinking we will need both escort and seating chart?
I’m doing alphabetical seating on foam board, white and black classic and simple
This is crazy on time. My wedding is in a week but I think why I've been hesitant is what if I have last minute changes on the seating chart but it's already printed out. How can I update it where it doesn't look tacky
Great advice 👍. I definitely will share this in my Facebook group. 😄
Love your videos. Had to laugh when you Said they only will be seated for dinner for 1 hour. Here in Norway its more like 4 hours😅
It took 2:30 before the actual video started
You are so fantastic. Thank you for the info and your amazing energy.
Oh dear God, Jamie. Thank you so much for this! I was kind of losing my mind with the seating chart the last few days. ❤
I went to a wedding with open seating and we grabbed the only seats available by the time we got up from the cocktail hour. Turns out it was right next to my ex and (who I was not on great terms with) and his new gf. My fiancé was not thrilled, made for a very awkward night 😂
Your videos are saving my life!!
I actually started working on my seating chart today so this was great. I wish you would have covered this on the video but that’s ok... what about kids tables???
Jamie Wolfer thanks! And for the kids of people in my bridal party I can sit with family? That might work..
On another note... what do you do at a reception when dancing isn’t an option??? Please help..
is it too complicated to only have the family tables reserved? and everyone else can sit where they like?
In the UK, it’s traditional to have a head table with the bride and groom, their parents and then the best man and moh and then have the bridal party at their own table
That's how I want to do it if I ever remarry.
I loveee your videoss!! I'd love to see a video on non seat-down dinner ideas (like cocktail style, food stations)
Thanks I was wondering about being a few odd people at certain tables, because of just the amount of people, I didn’t want to have an extra table for like 3 people🙄
Omg yesssss!!! Seating charts are gunna be tricky and I've been counting the days until you decided to talk about it 😆 ♥️ you Jamie!!
90 % of our guests will be family members. Both my fiances and my last name start with Bo... And we both have really big families. If we sort escort charts alphabetically by last name there will be 50 + cards in a row with Bo... on it... So, won't work for us:D
Mad World 96 can do by first names if it makes any easier
Do you list people as a couple/family? Or all individually. Like “Smith, Mr&Mrs”
“Smith, Jane and John” “Smith Family” ??
Wish you would have covered more on the technicality of make seating charts (software to use, where to print, recommended material to print on, DIY vs store-printed, etc.).
@@JamieWolfer I found the video. Thank you! ua-cam.com/video/nguxANQcc1M/v-deo.html
