DO NOT Buy a Volkswagen ID.4 | Update

- An update on my experience owning and trying to get my Volkswagen ID.4 repaired after multiple electrical systems failures. After 20 days in the shop and almost a month since being able to drive my ID.4, I get it back from the dealer with glaring issues before I even drive off the lot. The dealer (Capitol City Imports/Montpelier Volkswagen) was pushing me to give the loaner car back despite the obvious issues. It's hard to believe they took any time testing the vehicle before giving it back to me. The climate control was non-functional and as soon as I arrive at my house (5 miles from the dealer), the car dies in my driveway with the same electrical systems failure.
Here is what happened.
#volkswagen #id.4 #id4 #ev #electricvehicle #lemon #donotbuy #novw #customerservice #fail #tesla #rivian #carbattery #notgreen #EVisajoke #democraticrepublicofcongo
please post followup. i am getting same errors on drive system, same song and dance from VW. "take it home and good luck" is all i get from the dealer. 2 months in the shop. AVOID this car. VW doesnt care about its customers.
After pressing CLMA button you have to press the blue button left top corner for the climate control to work, it is a bit counter-intuitive but that is the way it works. The ID.4 has its flaws unquestionably but your climate control might actually work if you press the right buttons.
The climate control does not work if it’s off
I feel your pain man🙏. I have one of these Id4’s in Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪. Biggest mistake buying Id4, constantly having problems and dealerships are as useless as an ashtray on a motorbike. In Ireland it takes 6 weeks before a dealership can take your id4 in for inspection, due to the volume of electric cars failing at the side of road 👎. I hope you find a solution to this terrible experience 🙌.
do you still have the car, is it still causing problems? did the dealership fix all the issues you had with it yet
I know this might be of a great inconvenience also after the facts but had you thought about taking it to another dealership service center dept? This sounds like a case of a tech not experienced enough or not wanting to deal with ev's in general.
I looked at a 1st edition in 2021 and the mechanic kept looking at me like with a evil stare like get out of there I'm not fixing it if it breaks kinda stare. LoL but this dealership has the most ID.4's in my area now2023😂
Please keeps us up to date what goes on. Good luck!
Wow that is awful! That is totally unacceptable. Sorry what you're going through. I have 1000 miles on my 2023 ID3 Pro S Plus. It's currently in the shop for brake booster replacement. My wife also has a 2023 ID4 and it needed a brake booster replacement after owning hers for 20 days. My windshield is also being replaced due to excess distortion in the drivers line of site causing severe eye strain. I have had the surround cameras stop working. Luckily I found tip online to pull the fuse and reinsert it and it brought them back online. I had a loud clicking noise in the rear passenger axel every time I used the brakes that suddenly disappeared after 700 miles. My lug nut covers on my front passenger wheel side have had 2 that fell out and all were loose on my ID4 I had to push them back in. And finally, one of the slats in the center vent under the infotainment display cracked and fell out as I was simply adjusting the direction of the airflow. My ID4 has been nothing but one problem after another. I literally just passed the 1000 mile mark. It's a shame because I do like the vehicle. I also have a 2024 Toyota BZ4x, not a single issue after 2000 miles. I also have a 2023 Model Y Performance, no issues after 1000 miles. It is really mind boggling that both my wife's ID4 and mine needed brake booster replacements. What kind of quality control is Volkswagen doing with these? It is abysmal.
Not sure how the buy back works, but you should probably sue them and take them to the small claims court at a minimum and have them cover all cost incurred due to this lemon. Good luck.
Also do a separate video on how this VW buy back works... never heard of it but sure would love to know how it works. 🧐🤔
I appreciate your patience man. I even almost freak out of the situation you're in.
Scary experience story for us recent ID.4 owners. My car won’t set the primary user. I’m bummed about that but it’s minor compared to your ordeal. Please, please, please…let us know how the buy back process plays out for you. Others may be in the same boat and you sharing your experience may help others. Best of luck to you.
Did you contact your local tv station. I notice companies move real fast when you tell them that you are going to contact the media and get names. That is crazy that you had to go through this.
My wife has just received a 2024 version. All good so far. Impressive, in fact.
Another example of why you never buy the first gen of anything.
Honestly i bought a 2023 id.4 pro s awd made in the usa, Chattanooga, TN. Its my 4th EV. With a home charger 220 v, 40 amps, i never had an issue with it, i smoked a Porsche Macan, i havent gone to the gas station but only for cigarettes, much better built quality than the Tesla's i previously had, I love it. But as i said its a 2023 usa made, which i believe solved a lot if the previous issues mentioned in many videos here. I eish it had a bit better range. Hopefully they ll renedy that with the 2024 changes.
He probably had older software....
Same experience here! I love my 2023 VW ID4! Not a single problem in the 15 months that I’ve owned it! Sorry that you are dealing with these problems.
Same here I bought a 23 Pro S AWD with 961miles on it. After putting another 4000 miles on it not a speck of trouble! It cost $29,325 and there is just not another EV in this price range that can touch it!
Sorry about what happened to you. I have a 2022 ID.4, Pro S RWD, 56k miles so far and no issues with it. Best car I have owned.
do not be complacent. i had over 45k miles on mine when these issues began to crop up. get rid of it while you can.
@@hectorkatz5568 I now have 67k and it's still going strong.
V happy with mine too.
For climate control to work you have to push power on in the climate control screen on the top left changing the fan speed won't work until you power on the climate atleast now you know so 1 less problem to deal with
I just had mine day before 12 mi, in the middle of the road with this same error. VW roadside was awful.
I plan on canceling my lease tomorrow.
It's crazy how this has been happening.
Thanks for the video I was about to get one now I'm staying away.
That's is a garbage car.
Please keep us posted. You should tell people not to buys cars from that dealership
You have to press the on button for the climate control in the upper left hand corner. It’s a VW thing. I have a 2023 id4 same thing happens
Im sorry for your loss, but i would never have left the dealership in that broken car. I would have just drove off in the loaner.
Hello! While the drivetrain error is legit, the climate control one is not.
You just need to turn ON climate control from the blue button ON/OFF located top-left on your display.
Being an ID. owner myself I know the drivetrain errors can happen and they are quite easy to handle by a competent VW workshop.
Maybe you reach out another VW workshop in your area to fix issues.
All the best!
Adrian
Sorry to hear. I have a 21 ProS- no issues. I bought it certified pre-owned with an extended VW warranty.
hi, I'm looking for the same deal right now.. can you share a bit more about your experience ? How many miles you have? have you tested your battery ? Mine shows 91% of health. Thanks
Thanks for sharing your experience. Sorry this is happening to you. Do you think only the 1st Edition has this problem? I’m looking at buying a 2021 ID.4 Pro S RWD. I like the ground clearance and cannot go lower than the ground clearance ID.4 has. I do not want a Tesla either. A used ID.4 Pro S is within my budget. Do you think a different trim besides 1st edition wouldn’t have the problem you’ve experienced? I hope it works out for and VW gives you a good solution with the buyback. I hope you have a great day. Grace and peace.
I have heard that the 2022's and 2023's have fewer bugs than the 2021 1st edition. They have updated modules and firmware that just works better.
I have a 21 ProS- buy it! I have no issues..:)
I’m not saying it didn’t happen, but I find it hard to believe a service center would claim to fix your car, then when it demonstrably isn’t fixed, then tell you “goodbye” without some
Kind of rationale.
I was astounded. VW bought the car back from me in a buyback case. Covered all of my past payments, down payment and paid off the lease. It took a long time but I came out on top of it.
@@diwoodoesthings8288 im having the same issues with the car, how did you start the buyback process?
Yeah.. you were hitting the wrong button in your climate control.. you have to turn it on first.. I just replicated what you just did and got the same error. Gotta hit the upper left power on button first. The VW guy shoulda been able to show you. ... but yeah the stupid electircal system error again when you got home! Damn that would be annoying. I have a 21 FE as well. I have seen that error twice in a little over 25k miles.. if I shut down the car.. get out.. lock the door and get back in it has resolved itself. Your's obviously has a more serious problem. That sucks! They should at least give you another one.. there's tons of them on the lots these days. That would at least show they care a little.
VW just put out a stop sale for the id4s and updated it's website.
Document it, drop the car off at the dealership, and do not pay ANYTHING more on it. When they decide they want to ding credit, contest it and sue them. I have a 2021 model. It wasn't this bad though. None of the dealerships even offered me a ride home and no loaners when in the shop for 2 weeks. Long story short, tell them it's theirs and if they do anything, contest and sue.
I went through the entire buy-back process and they gave me over $15,000 for the car. They paid all of my future lease payments, all of my down payment (minus rebates) and all of my past monthly payments. It worked out well. But the process took over 3 months. I will be doing another video on this process.
This is the exact same thing that is happening to me with an iD4 I bought in Rutland
Yeah its a real problem with these cars. I will be doing an update video on the buyback of this car very soon.
@@diwoodoesthings8288 did you get the buy back? what happened? Im having same problems with my 21 ProS. same attitude from VW. AVOID VW
Thanks for sharing your experience. VW is now off my shortlist.
And Volkswagen does not care there are plenty of other people who will buy Volkswagen
Don't you have some kind of customer protection agency in the US? In the EU that could have been resolved quite quickly. They can't just tell you to drive it away as it is.. Don't forget to review the dealership in Google maps.
The Dealership came through for me. VW has really done their dealers a disservice by not equipping them to deal with this many issues on these new vehicles. VW just rushed to get these on the streets and said they will figure out the issues later. They shot themselves in the foot on this one.
EVs are all about software and assuming the dealership even tries, their techs lack the expertise and VW lacks support to properly fix this faulty software. One thing in common with ICE vehicles is an intermittent problem is always harder to diagnose and fix.
If you look at the climate control screen at the top left you will see that the OFF button is blue. This means the climate system is turned off. That is likely why it is not working. Push that button and it may work. VW dealers don't bother learning how this car works.
Thank you so much for your post. I the ID 4 was on the top of my list for a new EV. It’s now completely off my list
And this is why auto manufacturers need to open source it a bit more so owners and independent shops can DIYs and repair because if they're not going to do it within a timely manner and if they're going to be non-transparent about the reasons then it's up to the consumer since it's their purchase and their vehicle to look up solutions on their own.
I've had my 2021 ID.4 for 2 1/2 years with only minor issues. The dealership I bought it from had a shitty service department. I went to a different one. No problems.
Seems like Volkswagen put a stop selling these cars cuz I can't buy one used but now I've seen this video might be doing me a favor but then I can't buy it instead of me because resolved. You would think that software would be something easy to fix.
This is soo sad. Will never buy a VW/ Audi whether it be electric or combustion engine. Everyone I knw has issues with their cars from transmissions cutting out twice a year to weird software issues.
We have owned one of the first five vehicles released in our state a 2021 Id.4 pros for three years . While there have been a few hiccups, and recall items it is has been a great car for our needs. Our dealership has done a great job addressing these issues. I am sorry your experience has been so bad and feel it is somewhat of an exception. I hope you get treated fairly concerning your buyout.
And if there's no climate control that I would imagine the battery conditioning is being affected as well
Which year/trim? Sorry you're going through this
2021 1st Edition. My first mistake, buying the 1st edition...
@@diwoodoesthings8288yeah that’s kind of your fault there. A majority of people defined the 1st edition the absolute worst. Should have gone with a newer model or different trim
@modernwebdesigner9310 it lined up with when I needed a new car. Had most the attributes I wanted and I got $14,000 in rebates. Tough to say no. Wishing I had 😅
@@diwoodoesthings8288 that’s a very hard deal to pass up on but you have to remember that the EV market is still new. So reaching a bit deeper into your pocket wouldn’t waste your time with servicing. Like I said before the first edition doesn’t necessarily mean the best. Personally, I think if you had waited a little longer it would haven been a bit more rewarding
@@modernwebdesigner9310 you are correct. Early adopters often pay the price. What not okay is Volkswagen leaving their early adopters high and dry.
That is total bull. I can’t believe the service manager told you you had to take it as is. Certainly seems like a lemon law situation to me.
I have a buyback case open right now
@@diwoodoesthings8288 I am a big VW enthusiast, but am appalled with you have been treated
Sorry to hear this. Not sure why anybody wants to get an ID4 tho. Tesla is the only way to go: safest, fastest, most modern cars on the road, with the superior charging network, superior battery tech, superior software, OTA, Sentry mode, etc. Oh, and the most American made car. The only excuse the haters have are the panel gaps (mostly a thing of the past now), or that they hate Elon.
Tesla is a tech company that makes cars. VW, Subaru, Kia, hundai, etc. are car companies trying to make tech products
His car would have been at tesla for 6 months....
Having a local dealership is huge for me.😊
I have 2023 Pro S, working fine so far, no problems, 4500 miles. I’m just waiting to see if it’ll break down on me after a few thousand miles.
what year and trim is your id4?
2021 1st Edition. My first mistake...
What year is your car?
This seems to be a case of a bad vehicle and a terrible dealership where they have no clue how to fix the car. Either way you should talk to a lawyer about getting your money back and then some for this problems
What about hiring a lemon law atty?😊
Why did you get that German/Chinese car in the first place? I bought a 23 Bolt EUV in Dec and I haven't had any problems with it at all. I already have over 12,200 miles on it. Just put around 250 miles on it today alone. Chevrolet customer service would never do what that dealership did! If they don't have a loaner they would atleast drive u home or get you an Uber or something.
What makes it Chinese? It has an LG battery just like the bolt euv.
It's not any part Chinese. They're just dumb.@@coreyschmidt734
@@japanwatchconnection I think they fixed it a year or two ago already. The only active recall I remember is the B-pillar airbag setting the carpet on fire. And it's not a new recall, they just realized that some GM dealerships didn't actually fix it by placing foil in the right spot.
Let me see her 2021 year model and now it is almost 2024. So out of warranty soon. Better get it fixed.
So, was the charging cable connected?😂
No. I literally pulled into my driveway and this started happening. Immediately after pulling off the lot at the dealer after they suppsedly fixed it.
@@diwoodoesthings8288 wow! Thanks for info!
...So was it the issue all the comments told you the steps to fix? I was looking at a 2023 ID4... this is scaring me away from VW.
U cant sue them vw

Why didn’t you call me first…
You bought a water damaged car
I have heard of water damage in the door handles. Do you have more detailed info on "water damaged" cars?

@@diwoodoesthings8288I saw a logo "1ST" on the stearing wheel. So, it's one of the first id4s, right? Then it's all unfixable. You have get rid of it. Newer versions of the id4 is better, and can have newer software.
Why did you repeat yourself?
Why do people keep buying ev's ? Serves them right, no sympathy for them.
I have two and I’ve never had any issues with them.
After the second time it would get a match let alone 12.
Wouldnt own a pos ev ever
Bad luck , I have not had any problems at all .
Your AC works you just need to turn it on lol
WOW - what a terrible run you've had - seems like you got an absolute LEMON - VW should swap it out with a new one but of course that is the perfect world and didn't happen. I hope you get a solution. The dealer's comments were terrible. Anthony (New Zealand, SUN 25 FEB 2024, 11.33 a.m.)

Lawyer up
This is horrible!
Bro .......2 dealers i know have 40 of these one has 42 of these,A bigger dealer has 90 ID4s sitting on the lots.Sorry bro you got hosed like so many.
I'm sorry but watching this pissed me off, not because of the car or dealer, but because of the owner. Being polite is one thing, but being a pushover is another, and well we all can see that the folks over at the dealer think the same, and that's why they're treating him in the way they are.
There's no way on God's green earth I was taking back my car from the dealer with the climate control not working, and accepting their feedback that I have to drive it that way. It was staying parked up right there at the dealer, and each successive failure on their part to properly fix it, would result in an escalation of some kind, inclusive of contacting local media stations etc.
No one should be going through this ordeal with a new car, but the owner is doing himself ZERO favors by his nonchalant, accepting response to all the BS they're shovelling his way.
Hope he gets his buyback and be done with all of it. Next time buy a Toyota. VAG vehicles haven't had a good track record for reliability in decades, and clearly nothing has changed with their electrified lineup.
I actually drove off with the loaner the first time and didn’t accept my car back when I went back the first time. When filing the report with Customer Care they told me that I would be subject to storage fees and rental fees for keeping the loner car longer. Took a lot to get the loaner in the first place. Terrible customer service all around. But you’re right, not being nice anymore
face palm to the vertical camera orientation lol
Yeah, I initially filmed the error instances in 9:16 and just stuck with that for consistency. Video not made for production value.
Why buy a Volkswagen when you could of purchase a Ford Mach-E ? Im sorry that VW gave you a early Merry Christmas 😢
I don’t need speed, I wanted cargo volume in the back
Ford Mach E has its own issues, of which shows they are all first generational EV problems. Plus, Ford in general sucks.
Basically every EVs has issues being a new tech, even Tesla had it. The newer the model the newer software and better. Most people with 3.0 software and upward are doing fine.
Keep buying gas cars.

I still can't comprehen why people still buy electric cars , id understand a hyper super car and not an everyday car
They wana test the waters
@soliniv1411 lol what a waste 😂
Drive one sometime. You'll never go back.
@sprockkets I'm not interested in ev cars , I prefer petrol cars. I had the the opportunity to get one but I bought a45 amg benz , I rather cut my dick of and stick it on my head than drive an electric car , it is a complete waste of money. You basically have to calculate your mile and when you need to charge you have to wait , when I can just go to a petrol station and fill up my car in mins
@@trugaminglegend oh you are one of those idiots, my bad.
only EV manufacture i'd trust is tesla
How can you trust them when they faked their FSD video? They seem more interested in cost cutting their vehicles like taking out proper ultrasonic sensors and rely on faulty cameras to do stuff.
But you do you.
Tesla is the EV with most crash/dead registered. While it s fast and fancy, it s far from being the safest EV, not at all. Having a shady CEO doesn t help.
@@jonpetter8921Tesla has the most because they sell a majority of them. Who has the worst rate?
@@timson7970 No because it s unsafe. Too much speed, with questionable "autopilot" and Tesla owner syndrom....
@Bundynational Absolutely. Not even a contest. The other commenters below probably never drove one or have Elon Derangement Syndrome. FSD videos are not "faked" as someone here claims. And even if they were, you don't need FSD. The regular autopilot is orders of magnitude better than anything from the competition. Teslas are indeed the safest vehicles on the road, unless you think NHTSA, the European safety agencies and actual statistics of crashes per mile are somehow a grand conspiracy. Teslas are statistically the safest cars there are, it's not really a debate unless you are emotionally biased against Tesla.
The ultrasonic sensors are not needed. Last time I checked we drive with two eyes, not ultrasonic sensors. Vision is the only way to go for FSD to work.
Let's not get into the superior charging network, software, interface, performance, range, motor engineering, Sentry, phone app, etc, etc.
