The auto journalism world cried for a NA6 to return to the cayman....well here it is. Quite disappointing. Yet, excuses will be made since it has the "proper" number of cylinders compared to the T4.
Also, the UA-cam algorithm is doing you a disservice. You're the only one in the feed with a GT4 comparison video, yet only ~7k views at the time of this comment. I agree with the other commenters about the fact that you should have lined the cars up facing the same direction, but the video should be doing better than this.
Matt Miller Thanks for sharing your thoughts. This video was made under time pressure. It was better that I shot something rather than nothing. However totally accept the feedback about lining up the cars. great comparison, small point but it would have been nice to have both cars facing the same way for an instant comparison.
Bharat Patel 🤣Yes it would have made my life a lot easier too. One of the owners had to rush off quickly for an appointment so it was filmed quicker than I would have liked. The next meet-up should be more opportune👍🏼

Would have been better to have them in the same direction. Was getting dizzy going back and forth. Thank you for comparing them though. Very useful to see the differences. I am a 911 fan and like the Cayman shape. It is wonderful they finally put a 911 engine in them and kept manual. Just would prefer a more special engine. Glad the new one rev's higher now though. If you put GT on a car it has to have a special engine in my book which new one sort of has. Still would buy a GT3, but been tempted since the GT4 came out.

Asking the 718 owner to rev his engine a third time, after we heard the 981 (with sports exhaust), was a bit like asking an average girl to take off her shirt while standing next to Lindsey Pelas.

Mine has the carbon buckets and cage in the better sounding 981 but it all depends on the residuals for me....and hence what have you paid for a 718?
Thanks for the shout out! Shame neither have that leather/stitched steering wheel column. I’d say the 981 interior wins because the faux carbon fibre trim on the 718 is hideous. What’s the appeal of it? It’s basically tartan plastic. 718 should have special ordered the options of
Black aluminium dashboard trim
Extended leather dash
Inner side floor trim in stitched leather (can’t be had with the bucket seats, but can on special order)
Leather stitched steering wheel column
Can’t tell if the visits are Alcantera but should tick that option.
Shame the yellow stitch interior means the main dial is in grey which looks cheap and nasty and shows up all the cut outs of lights behind.
It’s nice. It’s rate it a 60% well specced 718GT4.
On what objective scale are you coming up with this 60% horseshit?
Phillip McMahon on the basis of what relatively cheap options have been overlooked and said options are such sublime options that they make up the extra %. For example why on Earth not get the exclusive to this edition Black Aluminium interior trim. Very few buyers go through every single option on the configurator, they don’t read through them in depth to understand the missed opportunities. I might have been a bit harsh; perhaps it’s a 70% good spec this one.
@@julian987r4 on the basis it's their car and it's what they decided upon. You're more than welcome to spec your own ultimate beast, and walk proud in the knowledge you've nailed it with your 100% perfect bundle of options.

Ok lets make a serious note to compare. For Porsche to come out with a new GT4, this is honestly not a replacement to the 981! a simple tune will have the 981 at the same performance in comparison to the 718. Im sorry but i would rather purchase a 981 used (if you can find one) with low miles than a new 718...718 is a flop in comparison. Well done to Porsche for doing a phenomenal job on the 981...for it will be an awesome GT car for years to come!

MagicAyrtonforever Yeah agreed, but it could cost similar to a used 981 GT4? What do you think a well specced 718 GT4 n/a 6 pot will sell for? It’s pretty much guaranteed by now... though still fingers crossed. The last of a dying breed before electrification.

Yep, huge difference in sound, really quite surprised by that. In fact, I can't really see much difference anywhere else, except the tail-lights. Im quite pleased to have a 981, moreso now.

Bcos the engine in the 718 is the carrera s engine just without the turbos and bored out to 4.0l. Much prefer the 3.8

Biased I know as I already own a 981 GT4 but the rear diffuser on a 718 is not as pretty as the 981. Still both cars are fantastic looking and in my eyes performance car bargains as I would need to sell both of these to buy my perfect GT3RS.

Correct. We were pushed for time. This will be made up for soon when we get even more GT4s together👍🏼
still prefer the 981. Will keep mine. I don't see any advantage to spend the extra $$ to go for the 718. Really dislike the difuser and the sound note on this version.
Great to get your feedback. Don’t think 981 GT4 owners will opt for the 718 GT4. It’s more for those people who never managed to get a 981 GT4. I do like the rear spoiler on the 718 GT4 though👌🏼

Just swap out the exhaust for one with a sound you prefer.
The 718 compared to the 981sounds flawed like most new cars with filters, all car markers are giving buyers are unusable bhp which only serves for bragging rights as most places in London have a 20mph speed limit. Old Porsche and BMW had a very distinctive sound from engine, induction and exhaust. Now when you buy a new car you then have to buy a new exhaust effectively spending all you money on trying to make the car sound better. Simple solution buy an old one and invest the save money.
Why didn’t you park them facing the same way, was getting dizzy with all the walking round, and very difficult to compare when not in the same shot😳

No sound at all the 718, very sad!
I’ve just driven another 718 GTS 4.0 today… the sound is all inside the cabin, not outside. I rather like the engine sounds in the cabin. Way louder than the 981 and 987.
Both are stunning, as far as spec’s are concerned that (IMO) is up to the first owner. Their money, their choice .
Hope everyone has had a great Christmas & no Santa didn’t bring me a GT4 this year. I’m going to look forward to enjoying my 981 for a while longer.

MAX REVS true, though it is upto the owners to explore every option, not just the obvious ones that lazy OPDs recommend (to make them seem knowledgable). One should read every option as in the Leather. Alcantera and Aluminium drop downs are some often overlooked gems of options that are cheap in the great scheme of things.
Furthermore, I don’t understand why the 718 owner didn’t go for the special Sports Club edition (which comes in either white or black). Same price considering the Alcantera pack is thrown in. Again an example of owners not doing their homework and not realising what you can order through other dealerships.

But the sports cup edition in black with the special livery is the best one to get in my opinion.
@@julian987r4 The sports club edition appears limited to the German market as it is only offered in the german dealerships. That's even in the article you reference. I can't see the GT4 RS being a daily driver, which is still an option with the GT4. Wait until the specs come out, and see.
You will need to move to Germany, or import a left hooker if you want to get the "best one" for you, in your opinion.
Phillip McMahon as mentioned to Max on the GT4 allocations in Germany, the Sport Club Edition orders are being taken in German indeed, but one can specify a right hand drive. Ditto with the GT4 normal edition. As to the RS, I am sure you are right on that. But probably no more out of place than most of the supercars trundling along at 20mph.
Julian Poole The GT4 RS!!! Now, you have to be special enough in the UK to be able to order a regular 718 GT4. Can you imagine the eligibility criteria to get yourself a GT4 RS build slot?? That truly will be a unicorn car. Germany or not, don’t think anyone is walking into a dealership and getting a GT4 RS build slot until you have contributed heavily in terms of $$$. Why would I want a super track day focused car like the GT4 RS for UK road use? This has surely got to be a car for someone with several cars in their stable, could even end up being “museum” pieces in personal collections. We have to wait for the launch of this car, and see what happens to the allocations. Dare I say, the numbers will be SOOO limited. I believe Porsche create these cars as special thank-you gifts for their premium customers. Doesn’t stop me drooling over it though, but for clarity, I’d take a regular GT4 for road use.
Btw. Many of the 981 came with Dunlop’s as well. Love both of these!! The 981 does seem to sound much better

Difference in sound in part is due to the particulate filters on the 718 for the European version. US version won’t have them
Sadly I can report the PPF is fitted on US Cayman GT4s. Just watch this video with John from Soul Performance. The car up on the ramp is a USA 718 GT4.

It's a facelift, not a new car.
8 year old GT3 or 1 year old GT4, thats the big question! I'd skip on the 718 for 12 months.

The video where i decided on a 981 GT 4 :-) Id happily take a 718 PDK as a daily, but otherwise there is no comparison, may as well get a turbo engined Porsche

Not much in it, which is porsche's way - evolution of design and performance. Porsche sports cars are so capable that small changes don't make a lot of difgerence.
Shoud park the car facing the same way instead of walking back and forth without good side by side comparison...i'm sure this been pointed out plenty of times arlready

Tough decision. If I could on the open market or order a 718...I would go for the ....aghh but the exhaust note! I can't decide.
Love all the small update but not worth updating if you own 981 GT4 imo.

Sounds like the 718 doesn’t have the sports exhaust or it’s not turned on. The 981 definitely is not running a standard exhaust. Either it has the factory sport exhaust or upgraded third party.
I don't think we're comparing apples to apples here. The 981 has a custom exhaust system while the 718 is bone stock. So it wasn't a fair comparison.

No single place and no simple answer for this. So many different sources. I started with the free library available in UA-cam then moved on. Too many different places to list. You can also spend absolutely ages trying to find something you like…

I was given an allotment but I did not take it. First, I really wanted PDK. Call me weird if you'd like, but I've done a lot of laps on road racing circuits (Rd Atlanta and Barber Motorsports Park) in my old Lotus racecar and I don't miss the manual gearbox at all. The second thing is I just can't consider it a true GT car until Porsche gives it the real engine and not a bored out 3.0. Also, the 981 just sounds better.

@@MAXREVS I never really turned it down. I just never acted on it and my name was on the list. Plus my sales associate took a new position at the dealership in management. In 2018, they gave me an opportunity to buy a new GT3 in Mexico Blue that the original buyer did not take, It was manual and my wife was not on board for me to spend $180k. I set up a referral list that wound up selling something like 26 Macans for them and it got me some status. I even got to go to Porsche Driving Experience at Barber Motorsports Park for no charge. I assume I've lost my status now that my guy is in management. But then again, he has some extra power now. I do still have my 981.
MAX REVS Nice concept for a video but I wish you had more time with them. It felt a bit like ‘Anneka Rice’ rushing around back and forth between them.
Btw, anyone can get an allocation... Getting a build slot is another story.
