I highly recommend cigar smoke as a great preservative. Either that or find a good cardboard box with top leaf covers.
Very nice finish to the T-54 TV series.

Nice restoration series. It is a great looking set, and in keeping the old scratch marks it retains its history from all the years gone by -

Excellent work, Bob! Another fantastic restoration job, it plays quite well for an electrostatic set!

Hi Bob, that set came out pretty good. For the simplicity and economy of the design they do make a good picture. We have been working on our T-54 (early version with octal tubes) while you have been doing this one and are quite pleased with the picture quality. Most of the issues we had with ours were due to some questionable work done during a previous restoration.

That thing has a really nice sharp picture, must have been really well designed for picture quality whether they meant to or not. 👍

I have had my Flagship Hallicrafters SX-88 for over 15 years... My summer time restoration project is to go in, check all the tubes, and change many of the capacitors, give it a full alignment. BUT!!!! As good as the SX-88 is, the way the engineers designed the radio they built it from the inside out!! Getting to some parts requires a lot of dismantling, and DE soldering of other parts..
As good as the electrical design is, the way it was put together, they assumed it would never have to be repaired.. My SX-88 is 100% all original, even the tubes are all original... I was very lucky to find this radio, it was still in it's original box, stored away for over 25 years in the ham radio operators garage.. The Ham hurt his back and had surgery. The SX-88 is so heavy he just left it in the box and never moved it..
Estate sale find, $150.00... On top of my SX-88 is a SX-100, another great radio and easy to work on... The T-54 was made for Ham Radio Operators, not the general public, that is why they designed it to use the same cabinet as so many other Hallicrafters radios.... Thanks for the video, good job!!! A++

To remove the white crud from the knobs, try soaking them for a few minutes in a mixture of warm water and OxyClean.

It was a great design back then. Even today, the appearance of the device greatly attracts attention. Awakens emotions. Now that's what I call a "human-friendly interface"!

I have one of these but the chassis is rusty but I took a dremel to it to clean it up. It does work but not perfectly.

That set, sans the CRT, does kind of look like an old ham radio. 😌

That's because the T-54 came in the same grey metal cabinet as the popular Hallicrafters SX-42 communications radio from 1947.

The dent on the top is most likely due to DIY TV Repair.

Great work! I cleaned the same cabinet that Hallicrafters used to house the SX-62 and SX-99.I approached it like this; Metal cabinet = Automotive finish restoration products. Rubbing and polishing compounds. Even 0000 steel wool with a cleaner for a lube. Rottenstone is another safe option for some softer metal finishes.

I would try scope on DC but put the biggest film cap you have in series with the scope input.

I know this may be a purely hypothetical question without immediate practical use but, since this is an electrostatic deflection picture tube, could one rotate the tube 90° and switch the deflection plates around (vertical for horizontal deflection and vice versa) and still have the TV work normally? I imagined that would be a way to put to use that area of the tube that is hardly ever used, at least providing for brighter edges if anything?
Just a thing I was thinking about. Great restoration Bob... I enjoyed watching it from start to end :)

    • @bandersentv
      @bandersentv  6 місяців тому +1

No. The pairs of deflection plates have different sensitivity. Typically they use the more sensitive pair for horizontal as it is wider. Also I don't think there would be any difference in brightness. It's not the electrons that wear out the phosphor. It's the ions that are less focused and degrade the entire surface evenly.

Another beautiful restoration but that paint loss is driving me nuts! Very Shan- goo like to not restore that. Please reconsider painting that, it looks so nice otherwise, a bit of paint would go a long way towards making it look spectacular!

@@bandersentv
