Thank you so much for posting this! Few physicians realize how important it is to patients to understand their conditions and scans. Most physicians just tell you what's wrong but don't show you, this was incredibly helpful and appreciated!

Fantastic! I had already taken a look at my Disc that they sent home with me and then found this explanation! My disc uses the exact same program as what you showed so the toolbar is identical and the views, dragging, etc. Now I go back and look at "my" knee armed with just enough knowledge to be dangerous! Thanks! (By the way, I'm a retired engineer)

I just had one done and have a week until doctors appointment but it fascinated me - so this tutorial has helped me understand the images so much better. now all i need is a little more on cysts and tumours and i'm my own dr google:-) SO appreciated because I can then at least understand when the doctor shows me the images and explains:-)

My doctor figured I had a torn Meniscus by my description of pain and the length of time I've had the pain 93 months). Looking forward to getting him the CD ASAP so that I can get the surgery and get moving again. Definitely can see the tear thanks your description.

THIS WAS AMAZINGLY HELPFUL. My only problem is I had surgery before on my meniscus and have hurt it again. I can't tell if the tear I'm seeing is new or from the old surgery.

Thank you. I have an MRI soon on my left knee. I'll probably have to watch this a few more times, but it helps me understand what's going on in there. Dr's suspect a torn ligament. We'll soon find out.

Dr Thanks for doing this- As you said it didn't make me an expert but now I can have a better conversation if the VA ever let's me talk to a doctor vice the PA (nothing against PA's). I had ACL replaced, cervical spine fusion and lumbar spine fusion with pedicle screws/rods after being injured in USMC, I am having some major issues with my knee now and the VA's physician assistant reviewed my MRI said everything looks good! except it continually fails me and I end up on my face. Last Weds it went out walking down a parking lot ramp that was a ton of fun. I went from an active lifestyle and job to basically scared to do anything other than walk the dogs with the wife. I know it is easy to take a pot shot at VA medical but man it really is bad at least in my case. Don't get me wrong I am very thankful that my injuries did not end up in paralysis but I am sure folks can understand that walking around on a knee that is unstable, feels like I have nails between the joints and creates situations where I fall is suboptimal. Anyhow, just a bit of frustrated venting. And I am so glad there are professionals like you that go that extra mile to keep us healthy and informed.

Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Very helpful. I just had a MRI on my left knee today and, while I know the major structures involved, I wasn't sure what was what when looking at my MRI. My Orthopaedic doctor suspects I have some issues with my MCL and Meniscus. I was thrown from a horse on Aug 5, 2016 and had a tib/fib fracture on my left leg, which required emergency surgery to repair. Since I have become weight bearing on that leg, my knee issues on the other leg are starting to present. So, at this point I'm waiting to see the doctor and find out what the next steps will be. Again, thanks for your explanation.

Way helpful, thanks for sharing! So the meniscus is one piece, correct? If so, how do you accurately describe (say in a written form) where the tear is located? Could you say lateral anterior meniscus or something similar?

Dr Chris... I am in Ft Myers and play ice hockey several times a week 55 years old. I have a new MRI showing a break in the top of the fibula, lots of fluid under kneecap and behind the knee. How do I choose a surgeon who will troubleshoot all the issues once inside the knee? I really don't know how to choose one and they all seem to claim they work on knees. Any tips? Thanks much
Someone should know that at 7:40 there is an image of a person on the femur. Pause at 7:40, make it full screen, and look at the top bone. Very neat. Thank you for the great video Dr. Centeno. It is extremely helpful.
A very nice detailed presentation Dr Centeno for patients to be much more informed about MRI scans. As a courtesy to the patient, could you mask out the PII on the top left of the InteleViewer images (from2:43 onward) if it has not been updated to read as a made up name and DOB?

Hi doc , i had a patella partial tear last six months and had a mri cd done. I got my new scan yesterday with a new cd. how do i compare the old and the new mri images making sure that the image taken is at the exact same place in terms of depth. where do i look at?

Most importantly, you want to make sure that you are comparing the same view. So Coronal with Coronal, Sagittal with Sagittal, Axial with Axial. But comparing two images from two different MRI's is a challenging task without training...

Generally Not. There is no evidence that meniscus surgery helps, and there is a great deal of evidence that it causes knee instability and contributes to arthritis.Having not examined you, I can't advise on your particular case, but treating the tear non-surgically with your own stem cells or platelets is a much better solution in most cases. thanks so much. my leg is a mess at the moment. I bent down oddly and now I have the popping sensation in the knee. seems I might have traumatized a tendon that is just above the knee. going for an mri. I have a bone graft and metal hardware left. fun times lol.

I love the idea of that! I shall have a look at the links. Can you believe, I have not been able to see the surgeon yet? I might go to the er for an mri. Oy! I'm stillnwalking but its a shorter walk lol. I had a serious injury and still have those metal bits in the tibia as well. Fun times lol.

+Dean C Dean, Yes, Xrays only show bone, MRI's show all structures. An X-ray is basically a static picture of bone, but an MRI shows images in "slices" so you can see a slice of any particular point, in three directions, or all reassembled into the whole knee. All of this allows us to identify issues with bones, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, muscle, and the meniscus.

Surgery would likely take you out of the game for a considerable length of time, but also negatively affect your body's biomechanics permanently. All I can say, is that you don't ever trust your doctor's opinion. I got my report a couple of days in advance of my appointment, and was able to read it. All I will say is that my doctor lied to me about the extent of my injury. He didn't even go over what the report said.

In your narrative, you say that the Sagittal is a "saw you in half view from the side." Isn't the Sagittal from front to back and the Coronal from side to side?
No, what he said is correct. The cut you make for a coronal view is down the side, which gives you a front and back (face and back of the head). For a sagittal view your cut would be down the front, giving you a left and right side.
