Country Joe and the Fish formed in Berkeley, California, in 1965. The band was among the influential groups in the San Francisco music scene during the mid- to late 1960s. The Woodstock festival's most memorable moment was McDonald's unexpected solo performance of "The Fuck Cheer".
Joe discusses his early years and the forming of Country Joe and The Fish. The legendary stories become true as Joe tells timeless stories about friends, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, Barry Melton, Jimi Hendrix and others in a career that has spanned 60 plus years.
"The guitar neck turned into a snake and I had no idea what was playing."
Joe tells the story of the band taking LSD and trying to perform at the legendary Matrix club in San Francisco. and his thoughts that Paul McCartney killed members of the 27 club

Great interview...his mind is still so razor sharp, as is his wit. I have loved his music since about 1987: I saw the Monterey Pop movie when I was like 14 and among other great life changing performances, was Section 43...a psychedelic oasis, and the footage of the grounds, particularly the fairway gave me the most profound deja vu I've had in my life...yet I was born in 73!!! But now, as an orchestral composer, I hear the music that inspired me when I was younger, with fresh ears and an even deeper appreciation of it...thanks Mark for interviewing one of my adolescent idols with such class and humor and thank you Joe for all of the mind bending music and thought provoking lyrics you have given us over time...I would LOVE to cover Section 43 for orchestra!!!

I saw Country Joe on a bill at San Jose State College in real late 69 or early 70. I was at Fort Ord waiting to get out of the Army and a couple of us went up there for an outdoor show. It was the South Bay Experimental Electric Flash Band, Country Joe, Albert King and Ike and Tina Turner headlined.

@@markhummel7656 you may have gone to the shrimp house and I might've been your waitress. I was the only white gal there. Everybody else was mexican including most customers. I didn't speak spanish. The meals were 1 2 or 3 pcs of shrimp. Shrimp were huge. Customers would hold up fingers to show me how many pcs they wanted. No idea how I managed to get the job bc the owners were also mexican. Think I was 18. Funny and long ago
