I got my Grandmother's 1984 Cavalier Wagon after she could no longer drive. I used it all through college. Was a great little car and the only thing I spent money on was to have the AC fixed. It had a leak in one of the seals.
I love the 1st Gen square body Cavi's. The hatch and coupe were very limited even when new every year made. I didn't know they made an 82 wagon. I'm a fan of these and ef sedans I prefer the sedan and wagon
The J-car was GM's latest "world car." There was also the Chevrolet Monza and Aska in Latin America, the Vauxhall Cavalier in the U.K., the Opel Ascona in Germany, the Isuzu Aska in Japan, the Daewoo Espera/Aranos in South Korea, and the Holden Camira in Australia and New Zealand.
We also had the European cousin counterparts, the Vauxhall Cavalier,& Opel Ascona here in Europe. The Vauxhall Cavalier was one of the best selling cars in England in the 80s.
I have owned the square body 1987 Z24 cpe. 2.8V6 White exterior blue cloth interior. Added a K&N air filter on the intake side added a performance chip to improve power out of the 6 cylinder.. Then put a turbo muffler out back. Wish i still had it now. Would've been a great cruiser plus enter a car show since i found & bought the '87 Cav brochure at a auto flea market!
Love the two tone paint on that hatch. Hate the 82 front ends. I prefer the quad light refresh... give me a z24 hatch an I'm a happy camper . I'm gonna drop a 3400 in that baby. 3800 supercharged series 2?? oh yes im a dreamer...!!
Old comment I know, but, you and I think alike. I have an entire front cradle from a wrecked 02 gtp. Everything for a swap. I have an 89 cavalier Z24 convertible, a 90 RS wagon 3.1, as well as a 91 Beretta that I've owned since 98. I can't decide which to swap.
Really nice styling of these cars. I like the sharp angles of the outside panels. I wish Chevrolet would make them like these again. New models are jelly bean shaped with ugly front and rear ends for the most part.
GM did a good job with the 80's J cars. My sister and her husband had a loaded sedan in tu tone blue like this wagon. They were worthy competitors to the Accord and Camry. Unfortunately GM kept them around way too long.
@@pcressma I don't have to I get tons of compliments on my two 80s convertibles daily kids in their 20s love them cuz their only reference is the bloated plastic bubbles they've made since the mid 90s
I loved my 2 83 skyhawk limited coups and my 86 custom coupe I owned in high school and after, so glad Buick didn't have those ugly high back front seats and all of mine has the Pontiac ohc 1.8 engine thank god
13:45 - bought mine in 1984. But never understood the dash design of having a real small fuel gauge and wasting all that space with the large right circle. Should have done what they did with the chevette, put a large gas gauge there and move the idiot lights to the 2 smaller circles..
The older and more "classic" these cars become, the more I like them. It's a shame they fitted them with heavy X-car suspension pieces and crappy engines, but they were very attractive and obviously what people really wanted, given how popular they were. It would've been cool if they did like the Cruze (which is a GM Korea product) and fitted the Opel-based cars with mechanicals from their then-Asian subsidiary, Isuzu.
The cavaliers cousins all had opel engines available within the first couple model years. The Sunbird and Skyhawk sold tons of units with the 1.8 and 1.8 turbo opel engines. The later Sunbirds were available with the larger 2.0l unit for a couple years. Great cars if you had the time to take care of them but few owners did
Nice I think 90 was the first year for the 3.1 in the Z24. Another engine that will easily take you to 200k. My Celebrity wagon had that engine I loved that car.
They were overpriced and underpowered because that 88-hosrspower 1.8-liter engine - which only lasted a year - couldn't get the car out of its own way. The added features made it $2000 more expensive than a comparable Toyota. Improvements turned the Cavalier into a decent car but the initial model soured a lot of car buyers on Chevrolet and GM. The J-car was a golden opportunity for GM to challenge the Japanese but GM blew it! You never get a second chance at a first impression.
They should have made a cavalier SS or a IROC Z model coupe or Hatchback models or maybe a V8 Rear wheel drive kits or model back in the 80s with cowl hood or IROC Z hood all up to 300HP as a concept or production models
I guess these bug-eyed Chevy Cavaliers were long gone by the time I became of age to notice cars but I do remember the quad headlight one with the same rear end. These were some of the crappiest and most crude little Abominations. I did like Oldsmobiles version of the J car called the Oldsmobile Firenza. I think it only came in the hatchback version and I don't think I've ever seen one in person but like the Buick Skyhawk which was another J car abortion it had a class your look then the Cavalier. These were the cars that you would get stuck with if the guy behind the counter at the rental car desk didn't like your attitude LOL

One of my first cars was an 82' Cavalier coupe. 1.8L, 4 speed manual and absolutely zero options. Not even a trip odometer. Check engine light was on from day 1 and was on when I sold it a few years later. Zero power but got excellent economy. One year only 1.8L because GM quickly realized it was a groany, grouchy, noisy, rattlley under powered piece of junk.
Wasn't that the 4-cylinder called The Iron Duke? I had one in the 82 Oldsmobile Omega. Only around 90 horsepower a little sluggish but it was a smooth-running engine

These all can yours if The Price is Right!
For a better look it needs corner to corner tailights
A buddy of mine bought a new one in 83. That 2.2 liter was pretty reliable and had decent power and fuel economy for what it was.
2.0. The 2.2 didn't come out until the 1990 model year.
My favorite car in the 80’s

GM sold a zillion of these and it's corporate counterparts: Olds Firenza, Pontiac j2000/sunbird, buick skyhawk and Cadillac Cimarron.

Biutiful car
It’s weird that the Cavalier had wood accents, but the Cimarron had brushed aluminum. Shouldn’t it be the other way around?
Caddy wanted that modern look despite being a luxury brand. They did the same with the Caterra back in '98
I go for the hatchback, bar none!!!

Where did you get this old school footage of Chevy Cavaliers?
Off of the introduction LaserDisc sent to dealers!
Back in high school in the mid 90's, a friend of mine had a Cavalier wagon. Brings back memories.

I believe the fuel headlights only lasted the '82 model year and half of 1983. Shame, because the type 10 hatchback had an amazing front.
Two year header panel. 82' and 83'.
82' had a one year only engine. Carbureted 1.8L gutless wonder. 83' and on had the 2.0L efi engine.
That's a horrible car!! GaG!
I had a sunbird, it was rubbish!!!
