Thank you for Alisha pointing out the pitfall of misleading comma insertion I have always been caught in. The comma can be used for the separation of between or among clauses, or a type of items; however, the usage of a comma in defining and non-defining relative clause is involved in the marking of the necessary information and complemental information.
Hello! As an example of the proper use of adverbs, I am wishing to determine whether Dr Who (BBC) was correct or incorrect with the wording on the sign on the telephone door of the TARDIS. Should it be "Advice and assistance obtainable immediately" or "Advice and assistance immediately obtainable"? Many thanks.
I've encountered this sentence "I have to really enjoy the good things because it makes the bad things OK" and I wonderd the position of adverb 'really', because I've only seen "I really have to + ..." so far. And Can we use "the" before "good things" and "bad things".
Adverb question: please answer this, it is a common structure that I think is often over-thought or miss-corrected. Here is an example: "Today in the Olympics, the Chinese women's soccer team lost badly." This seems wrong (using 'badly') instead of just (using 'bad'). Using 'badly' means that the team was bad at losing, because badly modifies the verb 'to lose' and to be bad at losing is actually good...so it's technically saying the opposite of what was intended. Wouldn't it be correct to simply say: "The team lost bad"? However, people think they are being smart by saying 'badly'. If the sentence is rearranged, it is clearer. Maybe something like: "The team had a bad loss" which would mean that this loss was worse than most losses, because any loss is assumed to be bad. But that's not how people talk. A kid says, "Mom, we lost bad!" and then the kid's mom corrects the child by saying "you lost 'badly'". But wasn't the kid right in the first place?
One would never say "trash disposal", referring to the device in the kitchen sink. Also, one would never say "garbage compactor". Garbage kind of refers to food trash.
Should I not use adverb with "used to" example I used to go to school is correct sentence but I always used to go to school is wrong sentence. Please explain.
1:- That can make you look back regrettably at your past. 2:- That can make you look back at your past regrettably. Which one is correct ? Please do reply!
