  • With factory 4 wheel disc brakes, rack and pinion, 30 spline axles and limited slip, the Explorer chassis need very little to become the best DIY swap frame.

    Interesting process thanks for showing us it’s easy enough for the average guy to do-just requires a little thought. Looking forward to seeing the rest of this build.

      Thanks. It really was a straight forward conversion once I decided where to mount the crossmember.

    The truck arm rear suspension is still used in nascar with great success.add a watts link instead of a panhard bar,cant get no better or reliable susp.

      😊 When you have a good design don't mess with it. I really like the simplicity and strength of this design. I am working on a jig to fab new arms. All of mine are pretty rusty.

    Valuable information for attempting a similar build. Do they have drop spindles for explorers? I am not seeing any advertised online.

      I have not seen drop spindles for the 4WD. I think that you would need to replace the 4wd spindles with 2wd spindles to get lowering spindles. I have not done this swap but I think that they will swap. You would lose 4wd (RWD only) and need to change the wheel hubs also.

      Ok...You learn something new every day. Since where I live the roads can be a little rough, I don't think too much about lowering my trucks. I assumed that the aftermarket would have produced a drop spindle. However, I have not located a source for dropped spindles. If someone has a source post it here. After studying the spindle design, it may be challenging to raise the spindle 2" with the original Ford design.

    Why not use the chevy frame cab mounts

    • @RandomRodShop
      @RandomRodShop  Місяць тому

      In general, I just use the prothane universal mounts. That way I don't have to remember what cab mounts I used on each project. I usually have a set or two in the tool box.

    I figured the Ford Explorer trackwidth would be narrower than a Chevy truck. What year chassis was the donor?

    • @RandomRodShop
      @RandomRodShop  4 місяці тому

      Thie frame is a 1996, but I think 1995-2000 are the same. The wms to wms on the explorer is 59.5. The 1955-59 is 62". Since I want to use wider rims, I don't think the 1 inch per side is a problem.

    1/2 ton hood and fenders are shorter arent they?

    • @RandomRodShop
      @RandomRodShop  4 місяці тому

      I think that the 1/2 ton hood is mostly taller because the fenders are shorter top to bottom. The two hoods are laying within 10 feet of each other,. I will put them side by side and check out the lengths tonight. Thanks.

    • @RandomRodShop
      @RandomRodShop  4 місяці тому

      I just measured along the side of both hoods they seem to be the same length. They appear to be the same dimensions overall, 😊😊
