- Check out this weapon I forgot I had! It was sitting in a box and picking it up brought back lots of fun memories of hours training with this fighting fan and demonstrations rocked and competitions won with this unique, versatile, and super fun “disguised” weapon!
Matt Pasquinilli is head instructor of Quantum Martial Arts at 905 US Highway 1, Unit N Lake Park, Florida 33403 www.quantumstrong.com Located minutes from Singer Island between North Palm Beach, Jupiter and Tequesta in the North, Palm Beach Gardens to the West, and Delray and Boca Raton in the South
Get your Kung fu fan in this store bit.ly/2ZS1Cku
Dude. Fighting with this thing would open up the gateway for a few cheesy puns.
Just wack someone with it while saying "I'm your biggest fan"
Haha. That’s perfect!
You win the internet for the day
*thwack* "Oh.. take it you weren't a ... fan... of that one?" 😏
The Kyoshi warriors laugh at this.
Ha! I laugh back at the Kyoshi warriors!
@@pasquinilli DONt insult suki and the kyoshi warriors sir
なたーり Suki would not STAND FOR THIS (especially if it were the situation where he would be like oh it’s because your a girlllll)
@@pasquinilli You know who they are right? If so you're one of the people on the internet who's my favorite
@@pasquinilli I'm pretty sure it would mean they are proud of you because they fight with fans too.
I have the exact same one and I used it for self defense
Nice! What happened?
Matt Pasquinilli some guy was following me and it turned out to be an attacker so I pulled out the fan, he threw out the punch, I blocked with the fan, then he removed the fan and I punched him in the solar plexis
Ouch!
How it's possible to attaché fans with blades i wanna know
me as a gay boy watching this with like fifteen of these for pure fabulousness 👁👄👁
Awesome. Keep training!
Slay girl slay. No litterally, slay whoever disrespects you.
Imagine this but a lightsaber think about it
I would want one!!
But it should only be the end of the fan tho... or else you would burn your hand of😊
For those of you who might feel that the bamboo fan is not something you can fight with, try the stainless steel fan. It's heavy and the loud "pop" when it opens is enough to scare people! More importantly, it's stainless steel and is an actual weapon.
Yes! I have a box of them. I love their weight too!
Matt Pasquinilli they can be more dangerous than they seem. I love them
@@pasquinilli its so refreshing to see someone show proper tessenjutsu, most times i see them doing "fight displays" using the fan simply in the open position, its most effective when closed, in fact historical examples exist of non functional fans made to look like they could open by using brass sheets between the iron ends
So used to the opening of the fan that I do with everything I have in my hand, just did it with a cup of water. Spilled it all over the floor :(
Hahaha. Mop it up and keep training!
Seen them but your the first for instruction I have seen. Thanks
Thanks for watching. It’s a little frivolous, but can look really cool with power and speed! Not in my top three, but good for diversity of training!
Thank you for this. I use bamboo fans but never for self defense. I now find myself in a place where a kung fu fan looks useful especially since I'm very comfortable handling a fan like it's a part of my body.
That’s awesome. How do you use your fans?
@@pasquinilli I use them in the most boring way- what they were designed for. But I can pop my fans with the best!
The metal ones are *heavy* especially where the blades all connect, and the snap is LOUD (I love it). Much different feel gripping at the base vs at the fabric end as far as momentum goes
Good points!
It's the equivalent of a mini club when folded and works as such.
I have the same philosophy you do. Once you have learned enough which is basically bio mechanical motion of the human body and understand the principals of martial arts you can create your own forms and methods. After all how do people think the first martial arts were created.
Kitana from Mortal Kombat had to watched this
Anyone else came here because of avatar the last airbender?
I just looked up whether there are actually people using fans as a weapon and this actually turned out to be very interesting.
Thank you!
I love the air bender series! I’m going to make more of these, just found my fan!
I came here so I can be a kyoshi warrior 😌👌🏼
Vovinam uses fans also
I would love to see a workout with this fan. Great for the wrists and rotator cuff
I have 2 fan in my bag. The metal one (for combat) and the wooden one (for cooling). The boy who punch me because I act in feminine way, now afraid of what I can do.
Awesome, I used the same applications in sparring, can’t wait to share the video. One other thing I found useful was to stick the opened fan in my opponents face to hide my strikes. :)
That's a great point! Can't hit what you can't see!
Exactly, I was surprised how well it worked. I thought if he'd punch the fan his punch would go right thru it. At one point I landed a front kick to the body, obscuring his vision with the opened fan :)
Sweet!
Exactly. The use of the fan for obscuring your attacks, not to mention the usefulness of a blast of wind to make your opponent blink for just long enough, can't be emphasized enough.
Great video, both in teaching and production! I see your wisdom in learning your art then exploring and playing with it. That way you learn more about your training and yourself. First video I've seen of yours, but definitely checking out more.
Austin Ross thanks Austin! I was just thinking about making another Kung fu fan video. It’s on my list after the next Bo staff free style tutorial. What is your favorite weapon?
@@pasquinilli So far my favorite weapon I've got to learn has been my staff. It's a Chinese waxwood staff so it's a bit more flexable than a Bo staff (so I've been told). What really interests me are the tiger hooks.
Wax wood is strong and flexible for sure. Are the tiger hooks the ones that cover your palm?
me watching this because i’m ab to buy a metal one 👁👄👁📝
Awesome. The metal ones are heavy! So be prepared to go slow at first and you will develop amazing grip and wrist power while learning how to fight!
Matt Pasquinilli i actually decided to go with a bamboo one!! i’m excited to work with them so that i can get better in order to use a metal one :) do you have any recommendations on types or where to buy them?
I would be interested too,the only tessen i found is the Seidoshop one and it has too high of a cost.
This is awesome. Love the part about coming up with your own moves. Can't wait to learn more.
Thank you! What kind of fan do you have?
I'm sorry I have to be that guy, ' look at the flick of that wrist!'😂😂🤣🤣
Hahaha!
Question: To use fan for defense/fighting would you need to have a specific fan or can you just use a regular one?
There are martial arts fans made from very sturdy bamboo or metal. They are ideal, but all fans can be used for defense. I am working on adding some fighting fans to my store. I will send you the link if you like. Email me at info@quantumstrong.com Thanks!
SENSEItional- what a fun, creative weapon. I have a student that is creating a form for tournament and demos
That’s awesome Steve!
This is a great show. #1 for search string "combat fan." Lots of wisdom here.
That said:
i see a lot instructors calling the old styles "basic," as if they are easy, unsophisticated, useless, boring, obsolete. I think that's arrogant and ignorant. Perhaps an American way of explaining primary lessons, which may be easy for anybody or so difficult only a few can pass; either way, BASIC
Thank you, Sir! This is a great video and very clear instruction
Wait can you learn it when being a beginner?
learnt this for wushu and tai chi , still can't understand how it would be effective in battle in fan form. It's really cool and can be use for cooling , but the hand position to hold it isn't very comfortable. All the other weapons seemed easier.
they told us the actual ones were metal and the fan form was basically a blade
Yes all true! These are really fun to train with. Are you still training wushu?
Some have sharp tips at the top that can cut when you slice
I hate to be that person, but that’s called a Tessen, which literally means metal fan, although they’re made from materials such as wood, bamboo, and iron. You need to be careful if you buy one because a plastic fan isn’t strong enough to be a Tessen and while the fancy wooden ones are, you need to be careful about the paper ones. Especially if you practice Tessenjutsu, which is basically ninjutsu except based on fans. Anyone who’s seen Avatar the Last Air bender will hopefully understand this. It’s like the Kyoshi warriors ninjutsu. I’m sorry if this is already in the comments, I just know a few things about Japanese weapons. Have a nice weekend!
Thanks!
i wanna learn so bad but all I have is an ordinary fan, is that okay?
I bet I could slice that in half with my wakizashi katana😂
Probably. That may be why the Japanese dominated most other nations at the beginning of the last century!
Does the material it's made out of matter when you want one that makes that noise? My 8 yr old wants them but I see they come in metal, bamboo and steel.
Steel is too heavy for him and will fall apart fast as well. Bamboo is best.
I need one like this
Yes! It is so fun to add to your training!
Can u please show us more and some forms about it. Please I have 3 for selfdefense so could u show us moreeeee plllllleeeeaaassseee!!!! 😁😁
Lol, Jack of all trades are you sir? Karate, Kungfu, what else :). I learned my fan form from Wah Lum Kungfu long ago. Pretty cool, I used to have a metal one. Got a second place on one of the competition of form performing. I would have gotten first if I was not so nervous and got sweaty palm and dropped the fang but picked it up and continue to kick a$$. Bringing back memory when seeing you with this video. Can't wait for COVID over to get back to it.
I should have said Taekwondo, Karate, Kung fu... above.
Haha. Yes! I love all weapons! I remember Wah Lum very well and got to see the grandmaster of Wah Lum perform years ago at a tournament when he did an amazing demonstration of strength and agility at an advanced age. I’m glad you picked it up and kept going! Where did you study Wah Lum?
@@pasquinilli China Town in Boston MA, sir. My teach is Sifu Bob Rosen so Master Pui Chan is the grandmaster who you probably saw. Yes he is incredible for his age.
I grew up in Vietnam... being in a family with cousins who knew and learned Karate, Taekwondo, Judo, and Kungfu (brother in law). So it is safe to say I also love all martial arts and a jack of all trade myself.
Thanks for all the video, I have learned quite a bit of tips from you.
I used to be very dedicated but as I get older, real life kinda taking over and martial arts becoming an on and off things.
Keep up the great work sir. You video are an inspiration to us all.
really good video i cosplayed avatar kyoshi and this helped alot
Can this be use against kicking such as kickboxing, teakwondo and other martial arts that involves kicking can this fan block kicks if someone was about kick you in the leg can this fan block that
It can but if you can get out of the way of the kick or even close distance quickly and jam the kick, that’s better. But yes, everything is possible with training. Best to learn how to kickbox or box and grapple too!
Great video that's nice for women's self defense
I just got a fan and opening it and closing it are difficult for me. Seems my grip is too tight to allow it to open. I am better with my right hand and I am a lefty. Another problem is my fan is made of metal and perspiration makes me lose grip. I just naturally keep a firm grip. Only thing I know is work more with my left side until it gets easier.
where do i get these? im about to become a super hero.
I sell them. Send me an email pasquinilli@hotmail.com
what is this kung fu martial art called? anyone know?
Can you wound someone using this? I'm just confused,,,
Yes. I could wound someone with a stick, and a fan, when closed, is really just a stick.
They also make metal, sharp ones as well so...up to you. But really, anything can be used as a weapon and cause damage.
Ciera Shyann do you know where I can find the sharp ones?
Can you recommend and good websites to buy metal ones ?
In the app "mercado libre"
Do you have bamboo or plastic fan?
Bamboo
@@pasquinilli how do you think, which one will be stronger?
I think I might get one
When fighting with fan I get tense that It may torn ALL the frabric While fighting.
Yes. It might get torn, but you can mend it easily. Do you have a wooden spine fan or metal?
@@pasquinilli I prefer the metal one. But the wooden one is more easy to disfarce as an weapon. I only have the woden one. But I never had the guts to hit someoone with It because i fear that It may break ahsush . I don't have this feeling with the metal one
I like your Awesome Moves!
I love fans, and have a little collection of cheap plastic ones. I've been wanting to invest in a steel one that won't break after 5 minutes, and I'm now learning they can be used in self defense?! Am I about to become hyper fixated on mastering a new skill for an indefinite period of time? Absolutely.
Awesome! I have a strong rattan fan that my students use. They are hard to find sometimes but I have a few for sale if you want one.
he : buy your kungfu fan here
the hand fan market in my country : why are we still here ....... just for suffer
I so want one.
I sell them. Send me an email pasquinilli@hotmail.com
Thank you so much. 😍
Isn’t it called a tia chi fan or something
My boxing coach didn't include the fan in our circuit training. He wasted our time with all that core work, jumping rope, shadow boxing, and double end bag training.
Hahaha. Mine too. I had to go learn this on my own time!
I remember joking with my friend that fan fighting was intimidating looking to me because I have trauma from the frill dinosaur in jurrasic park
How does one open a fan (quietly) in church without drawing attention to myself. When there is (NO AIR CONDITIONING) 🥵🥵🥵🥵
I need to cool down.
I look forward to your reply.
Kevin.
Same motion just without the wrist pop at the end. It will sound like a butterfly or angel wing!
Thxs Matt for the feedback 😁
Have a wonderful holiday season 🦃🎄🎼🌧
I finally got my kungfu fan hope theirs alot of kungfu fan videos here
I’ll make you some new ones!

Matt Pasquinilli Just someone from a show I watch who uses fans as her main wepon😂
putch ⟭⟬ Kuroshio? Lol 😂
Me to I watch a lot of movie to how to used a fan.
Good for you! Keep training!
I wish they would try to make a necklace or neck wear out of them so that way anyone can conceal them and carry and pull them out anytime they like ❤thx I hope you like my idea friend and can you please try to make a necklace of these to kinda pop it out etc to utilize it or neckwear etc etc thx 🙏?and you could utilize smaller fans that people could place on their neck inside some kind of case maybe press a button to pop em out and click it back in or something. The fans would then sell like hot cakes brother
And you might even call it a kung fu fan necklace or edc kung fu fan necklace or kung fu fan neckwear or just edc kung fu fan etc and it would save a bunch of lives imho
l love fans
Doruk bıra cici the best!

Who would fight a fan
I got in a fight with a fan once. It was at a football game! Haha. JK. Good point? What would you use?
Matt Pasquinilli your a martial arts master you can fight with anything by the way your cool
꧁Âiko Emica Saito꧂ thank you! I also like to roll up a magazine and use that similar to the fan!

Time to be douma
I have a nunchuku bat i prefer something that cops wont take away from me this is good concealing weapon cops wont recognize it us killing weapon
THWORP!
In plain english, you are making the movements
"YOUR OWN." One question,
"bamboo" fans...can you take them into a government building in the United states? Considering it can be used as a weapon. ( Ohio isn't any fun according to my Sifu, they would even declare a fork is a deadly weapon if it is used such).
😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋
I am not sure that it would be seen as a weapon or not as a weapon. It probably has a lot to do with how you would present it and so I could see it being taken away from you if you carried it as if it were a weapon and if it were just in a bag or something then it would seem to be just a fan. But I understand your question in your point I just don’t think that the answer is very black-and-white.
@@pasquinilliThanks for taking the time out to answer. I am going to use one for cooling myself off in the summers since I cannot take the hot summers in the middle of the United States anymore. I was put in the hospital in 2016' and almost died from diabetes.I kept ADDING work on way past what I could safely do. I had a blood sugar of 662 and was going to try to go back to work soon as I could. My wife and daughter said ..... "NO ! " and I was curious about the laws even though I hardly go into government buildings. And the way I present it is going to be fun, for I am a descendant of Robert the Bruce, first King of Scotland. He looked like a midevil biker, real scary 😋.
And I look just like him! Soo
I try to avoid government buildings ( even though I have the " heart of gold " as one of my other ancestors.) But in this day and age they profile you first 😟. I am looking forward to more videos, we need more people that know what they are doing with martial arts.
( I've seen enough "wanna bes"over the last 40 years.)
HERE IS A GOOD ONE THAT MIGHT GIVE YOU A GOOD CHUCKLE....There are classic pictures of Chinese Kung Fu Masters looking so wise and sage like. My Sifu up to the 1980's, looked like the "laughing Budda" with "Bert and Ernie" hair. 😁😁
But you didn't try to back him into a corner, he would get out OVER you! 😵😵😵
Hahaha. Can’t judge a book by its cover! Thanks! Keep training!
Just the ((ARMS)) are considered deadly of you know Japanese gung Fu so be like the royal British family. Left hand over right hand on the belt buckle and walk in gracefully, just make sure you dont hide your hands in your pockets. NOT EVEN ON A FREEZING COLD DAY, THAT IS WHY THERE ARE LEATHER GLOVES IN EARTH TONE BROWN ((NOT BLACK!!!))
Yumi from Code Lyoko anyone? Lol
Haha
Eli Jean-Baptiste yewww
If only I had a dollar for every time ive seen a white guy teaching Tae Kwon Do.....
Hahaha. That’s a weird thing to say.
@@pasquinilli Every Tae Kwon Do instructor Ive ever met in person has been white and seen quite a few online...usually white. Just an odd observation lol Its like expecting mister miyagi and being taught by Danielson instead
Joe Poelmans haha. I get it. My instructors were Korean. The Koreans spread out throughout the world to teach to non Koreans. It’s why Taekwondo is so prolific. They were successful. But I understand your point, it’s like looking going to a Japanese steak house and all the hibachi chefs are not Japanese. They are just as good or better than their Japanese colleagues but not what you expected. When I took over my first school from a Korean twenty five years ago, I lost a lot of students because I wasn’t Korean. The guy I took over from was a lousy teacher and martial artist. He lied about his experience and rank and had one tenth of my experience and skill. The students who stayed eventually realized it and a lot of the old students came back. But I remember one student yelling at me because I wasn’t Korean. Thanks for explaining your comment!
@@pasquinilli Not sure if its the race or the culture but it def throws people off. That steakhouse analogy is pretty much spot on.
When I visit Kukkiwon in Korea, I see high ranking masters from around the world and it is very diverse. Taekwondo has become so wide spread that it is truly a gift from Korea to the world.
That literally has 0 practicality in a physical altercation.
Bobby Johnson haha. Don’t know for sure. Never had to use it! Certainly is fancy tho!!! What would you think the perfect weapon would be?
Matt Pasquinilli a gun
Lol
My moms boyfriend thinks hand fans are stupid but one day I’m gonna crack my fan out on him and pull a sneaky one(kali teacher)
Haha. He better watch it! It’s really just a stick and can be used like any other Kali stick plus you have even more functions like cooling yourself off after you fight!
