    44 yrs ago i met a wonderful man, i had a 4 yr old daughter. 5 yrs later we married and he adopted her. I wish all single moms could have this blessing. But yes i watched him closely and would of walked away in a heartbeat if he mistreated her. He left any discipline up to me, but she was such a loving easy child to raise. Im proud of the father he has been to her to this day.

    My mother was sick in so many ways. My brother and I eventually wound up in foster care. I was more fortunate than he was. I found a family who I lived with for two years until I graduated high school. But all I ever really wanted was my mother's love. She died when I was 15. I've done so much work on myself in order to heal the aching wounds left by unmet needs.
    This movie speaks so powerfully to those old wounds. I've watched it numerous times. There just aren't easy answers. Even when mothers aren't able to provide the environment a child needs to thrive, nobody can truly replace the love that only a mother can give.

The lady is hurting, and she has decided to share her painful story, but what you can say is you disagree. Let's learn to be compassionate to each other. Your daughter was two years old when she lost her mother ( this age can not remember a lot), while the lady in question could probably be 11-13 years when she went to foster home. You can't compare the two scenarios. She has a lot of memories with her biological mother. Kindly be sensitive. This comment was so insensitive. I hope in your free time you will ask God for forgiveness.

The acting in this was phenomenal, especially the oldest child.

    This movie's real title is In the Best Interest of the Children and is based on the true story of the Cooper Children of Iowa. It was very well done and very accurately portrayed!
    On March 14, 1985, five children (between the ages of 3 months and 10 years) were given up to foster care by their mother and placed into the home of Larry and Paula Mick.
    Just as the movie shows it became clear that the children had suffered great neglect and abuse by their mother who loved them but was mentally ill. The children attached themselves to their foster family and decided that they did not want to return to their mom which sparked a nation wide case on "What was in the best interest of these children?" Return to the birth mother who was trying to get well or be adopted by the foster parents who were being told that they should not have gotten involved.
    Whatever should have been done, they were literally ripped from the arms of their foster parents after having lived with them for two years. Their mother, although they saw her and were able to reconnect with her, did not get well enough regain full custody and the children were placed in the care and eventually adopted by their aunt and uncle.

    • @maricamaas2326
      @maricamaas2326 3 місяці тому +6

      The drama with the foster parents could have been avoided had the children from the beginning been placed in the care of their aunt and uncle. Why did the Peppers not apply to adopt children who were available?

    • @raea3588
      @raea3588 3 місяці тому +4

      @@maricamaas2326 While I try not to speculate or judge too much on what I don't absolutely know, especially since many who were involved in this are still alive, I agree that the children should have been placed with their aunt and uncle regardless of how their mother felt. This case did help change a lot on all sides of the foster system. Yes, their mom did give them to the care of DHS voluntarily but from what I've read their living situation was so bad, they were going to have to take the children no matter what. This was almost 40 years ago but DHS seemed to be naïve about how long the recovery could be for this mom, how long the children might be in the system dealing with their own trauma... If they had been with family, which is something that is almost always hoped for, the children would have remained in safe keeping for themselves, for the mother and in case she could not have full custody returned which is what happened.
      I don't know anything about the Pepper's (Mick's) personal background.

    Most people can't or won't understand, but this movie highlights a big issue in the foster care system. Yes, the foster parents were lovely people who truly cared for those children, but the first plan is almost always return to parent or a relative placement. If it doesn't work out the foster parents can submit their name for consideration, but only after a permanency plan is the next step. The job of a foster parent is to provide a safe home and make sure that the child is having his needs met. And whether anyone agrees or not, part of those needs is to love them while you have them then let go when that time comes. You cannot go into fostering with the idea that you're hoping to adopt a child that comes into your home. Building relationships with the child's family is fine, and encouraged when appropriate. Many foster parents stay involved in a child's life after they return home. But you cannot go in with the goal of forever, because that is not in the best interest of the child.

    • @maricamaas2326
      @maricamaas2326 3 місяці тому +5

      In this case it was wrong to give in to the demands of the unstable mother. From the beginning the children could have been placed with their aunt and uncle, who were willing to take care of them. Sadly there are mothers - seriously suffering from mental illness - who are not (ever) able to take care of their children. For psychiatric doctors to give false hope in this regard is not helpful for anyone involved.

    • @madreep
      @madreep 3 місяці тому +4

      @maricamaas2326 no, it was completely appropriate to "give in to her demands". She was voluntarily placing her kids in the care of the state, if they wouldn't have done as she asked she would not have done it. Even when it's not a voluntary surrender the wishes of the parent(s) are often taken into consideration. The physical address of a child's foster home is typically not given to parents for a reason. When the parent knows where the child is located it can become a safety issue among many other issues that may arise, especially with a parent who has untreated mental illness. Never mind that the children themselves were also unwilling to go there because their mother had filled their heads up with all sorts of things that she believed to be true. There are alot of problems with child protective services no matter what jurisdiction you live in. Some are much worse than others, but none are very good at all. But there are processes and rules in place for very good reasons, and it's important for people to understand that. Everyone is critical of child protective services, but very few know the basic laws and principles that govern what they can do. I aged out of foster care, and worked my ass off to put myself through college to become a social worker. Like many other kids who grow up in that system I wanted to fix it. I got my degree and chose to work in the medical field instead. CPS caseworkers are 99% powerless. Some have no business being there to begin with but I think most go in with the same ideas that led me to become a social worker. You become disillusioned real quick.

      I agree 100%. I remember when this debuted, even my mom told me that the Peppers should not have even said "That's terrible!" when Jessie complained about her family.....they are supposed to remain neutral. Also, inquiring about adoption within the first HOUR of their arrival?!! She clearly had issues of her own, including her marriage....she was almost obsessed with the children. They were wonderful parents yes, but like you said, they cannot go into it thinking of forever.

      You don’t know the facts. Notwithstanding that this story was made in the 1980s, there are a myriad of programs for underprivileged children. The specific programs vary by state. In my county in FL, there is free breakfast in all public schools from preschool-12th, for every child. There is a free school lunch program in which the parent has to enroll their child. Then there is Medicaid for healthcare and the chips program for living expenses and then layer in the federal programs…. The USA taxpayer is on the hook for children, even for those whose moms keep getting pregnant bc they won’t take their birth control pills, just like in this movie. Then layer in the Christian charities that help everyone all over the USA and other countries … you might need to wash your mouth out with soap.

    I know 3 people with Manic Depressive Illness (now called Bipolar) & none of them ever had hallucinations or thought people were out to get them. I have seen many movies regarding this content. I have never been in a foster relationship as parents or a child. I cannot imagine what either party is going through. I have Bi-polar and understand the jumbled mind of the mom, played by Sarah Jessica Parker. What an amazing acting job. She hit the nail head on. Yet, for someone who has a degree in early childhood education, I can see the other side of the children. Their mannerisms, their fear, their weariness, the way they stick together, and reluctance to not do anything until the older sibling approves it. Anyone can judge what they feel should happen in this situation. But I can see all sides of it. I always love the actor that plays the husband. Sally Struthers has the quivering in her voice of desperation. I do not know what it is like to not be able to have children. What I don't understand Is the side of the people who are in the court system. Their job is to prove the best interest of a child. I know their job is to be fair. Sometimes children living with a parent who is sick makes it more difficult for all parties involved. I don't understand how foster parents do not have more rights. I guess you have heard you have to have a license to have a dog or go through a process to be a foster parent or to get a license to drive. Even going through the process of adopting from another country (in this world today), parents are screened beyond measure. Today we deal with human trafficking. Yes, the movie is about the best interest of the children. I have read some of these comments. Everyone has a right to their own opinion. The words I write are only my opinion. I just don't understand the laws. Foster parents don't have any rights, but I just don't understand the court system.

    I call it bureaucratic B.S. Where the preponderance of rules and procedures that were applied impersonally by specialized agents. For the sole benefit of POWER. The INSENSITIVITY, heaviness and rigidity of administrative action of those who work within a department.

    Great movie 🍿
    Very emotional ,
    I just feel she more misses Rae or having a man leaving the oldest to play Mother!
    The care system was really messed up then they blamed the wrong ones... I really didn't like that social worker she really didn't care for them or even listen she had in for those good foster parents.
    Not any Zooming or too much adverts 👌

      Not to mention seeing the baby sleeping in a clothes basket! A clothes basket?? Buy a crib, for God's sake. But then, if the woman doesn't know to BUY CONDOMS I suspect she would never shell out for a crib.

    I've lived in smaller places and didn't have my kids crammed in one room sleeping on the floor! Even if you don't have money you can live with pride...There are so many agencies that help. And they don't stop food stamps if there is a man in the house...unless he is a convict!

    True story… The youngest girl committed suicide as a teen..
    The others are doing ok though. They were all adopted by their aunt n uncle.. They were reunited with the foster parents as adults and have a relationship with them.

    It's NOT always in children's best interests to take away from parents. It messes children up. Makes them angry later on in life and they don't realise why they're angry but it's sepsration anxiety at its WORSE. I realise it's necessary in really bad cases of abuse but only as last resort

  • @debraonger2379

    Those pore kids should have gotten to be adopted by those foster parents. They have been through enough. The welfare system needs a lot of work. It's their job and don't seem to really care about these kids. It's a flawed system.😢
