Been a while since we've done a how-to and Dennis was down to explain the weirdo world of barspins that no one really talks about. If you're looking for a more straight forward how-to, I'm pretty sure the one we did with Deemo is the best one out there... • HOW TO BUNNYHOP BARSPIN
Thanks to odigrips.com/ for sponno'n this series and helping us keep the lights on. If you need some grips, ODI has the best in the game.

39 years young got my bunny hop bar spin dialed one way forcing myself to do the other, going to get fly out barspins one day.
Good for you man that's awesome. It sounds like you just haven't found a good flyout to get some practice in. It's usually the best and safest way to learn tricks. Reason being is you can get a good amount of air but you land going pretty slow so even if you need to bail it's generally pretty forgiving. Compared to bunnyhopping out of a bank where you have a ton of forward momentum.
Find a flyout that's not too big not too small and hit it until you get really comfortable in the air. Then just keep pinching your seat when you air out with your legs. Eventually you'll have the 2 most important things memorized and you'll just throw the bars and make it work. I would also highly recommend trying tuck no handers and toboggans. Both are actually pretty easy to pull off. Both are quite stylish too, especially if you send one over a spine or dirt jump or something.
I’m 37. Been back riding for about 2 years . About to throw them soon!!!! Thx for the motivation
I put the handbrake down and picked the bike back up at 27, throwing em both ways now. Age is just a number, get after it boyssss Yeww
Update: I got a half bar easy now on a fly out!
@@CrackerrJack Awsome!
Story: i always wanted to do 270 bars over a corner, but did not have the confidence to go for it. I had some 🍄one day and the visuals were so strong that I thought ill fly to the park and do it. It felt so real. And then when i went riding the next time - I tried doing it. Guess what. Had full on conficence and did a clean 270 bars the first time!
shoutout dennis for this, i got the same weird thing where i’m learning to throw oppo bar as my more comfortable direction.
I love the how to’s videos! Thanks Guys
I witnessed the first ever helicopter to manual 180 and helicopter to tail tap. Devin Fredlund is one epic human
I am left foot forward and i learned my barspins right a couple months ago. I even landed a couple 180 bars spinning right and barspining right. Hopefully i can learn my regular bars easy and get more comfortable with spinning and baring at the same time.
Left foot forward and spin with right hand. Also learned half barspin first. My favorite was doing t-bog to barspin. Great video overall 👌
i too wasn't aware there was a "right" bar rotation and learned them the wrong way 😂not interested in grips bc got odi on my bmx rn :) and also want to say thanks to ourBMX for keeping me both entertained and inspired to get back on my bike while i recover from my acl / meniscus reconstruction!
That is such a great description! Makes sense with your style the most dialed no-foot seet grab barspin next to the goat Chad Kagy with that solid cranx add! At san jose ramp club? Denis got that snap! though Dialed Perfected the no footed set grab barspin. Love the way you do your whips with your right leg full extended, I walk with a limp cuz my what is heavy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dennis is the man. Im left foot forward too, and right handed. At first it felt more comfortable to throw with my rigth hand, but once i learned the catch was more important than the throw, i just forced myself to learn left handed throws instead which now feel great, especially when spinning to the right. Poor goofy riders like jay dalton are all backwards from the start lol
i learned left foot forward right hand throw also. and now most easiest on regular barspin but i got a lot of broken fingers/nails doing on regular barspins than opposite one. and it heals forever. its takes 3 months to me to throw regular barspin again . cause it lil scary to hit them fingers again. thats the worst pain ever. and yes i really need that Green ODI grips dennis/fudger 😊 mine was thinned-out cause of those barspins :D thank you ! have a good day! ridesafe!
Craziest barspin I ever did. I threw it so hard and fast my bike did a 360 tailwhip crankflip! and then on the landing i looped out and shit my pants... damn... don't drink too much coffee before you ride
When I first started passing bars I had same feeling just to throw with me left hand when right foot forward, it was mad cause I used to like dog piss with my leg and took my foot of catch it and then put my foot back on 🤣 got the clip aswell 🤣, was like mad happy running round like dudeeeee I landed barspins!!!🤣 thank f**k I didn’t continue this but from learning opposite I’m loads more comfortable just throwing bars both ways since learning opposite which is nice to have! Yooo caps lock is the got to edit before I ride!!! Just hammers every clip man
some of the lines in here are soo nice!
Craziest barspin I did was off a crusty loading dock that was over neck height after first learning them and to pump myself up I did a nollie crankflip up the handicap ramp so I wasn’t even thinking about the barspin. Have it on video too if anyone wanted to see it
Post it man, sounds absolutely bonkers!
Here's one for ya. I rode BMX before it was called that and we had no idea that bar spin's existed. Even though I had an oryg. Don't suppose they still make those do they? Or the Potts bolt? Still have both on my Hoffman TAJ. You're a sick ass BMX rider for damn sure! Half of what you so I can't even imagine. Sending such HUGE SHIT!! Keep wearing that helmet PLEASE.
Left foot forward, learned them right hand and never tried the other way. I just picked my bike up and definitely easier with left hand…..the more you know! 😂😂
If I had some odi grips I might be able to sum up enough courage to buck a bar spin
Truly built different
I barspin the same way as you Dennis throw with my right and catch with my left 👍🚲💨
Took my bar end to the chest failing a bar spin. Don't expect this to win the grips but if it does, pass them on to the next guy :)
i just have such a hard time understanding *why* the barspins are different depending on the hand. I understand the reasons you mentioned, but would a rider being right foot forward reverse things?
get well soon dennis
Coolest story I have is I met you before at Dallas skate park Dennis and I showed you the way I barspined you were minded f lol asked how I wasn’t breaking my wrist on the way I flicked it but now I’m back riding again trying to relearn them busting my ass but I’m almost there 10 year later and this time I’m throwing left hand not with the right
The only barspin tutorial people need is Barspins with Grandma. If you know, you know
I don't knowwww. :(
@@OurBMX 🤣🤣🤣
Barspinning goofy is the worst. Throwing towards your forward foot is the way, keeps the bike stable; your foot keeps the bike from doing that sexy jiggle. Ive done it wrong for about 15 years 😂 10/10 definitely advise young bmxers to learn them the proper direction, whichever that is for your stance. I have some regrets 😂
My best barspin is an opposite barspin out of a smith, when i was 15ish. I was trying to land my first smith to regular bar out of a skatepark funbox upledge. I panicked while in the air and threw them the wrong direction. Stuck the landing with 3/4ths of a barspin panic grabbing the crossbar with one hand and still squirelling away somehow 😂
Fun fact, i committed to learning actual opposite barspins at about age 23 😂 lmao
through a bar spin once, ate shit never again lol
Im left footfordward and it happen me the same exactly thing . Learn em opposite way , i took me so long because as you say the bike was wooboliing under me , and when i finally learn ‘em i realize that was my wrong way . And when i knew was opposite i have to re learn ‘em because i wanne to have it both ways 🤦🏻♂️, and one time i throw them and the bars just pass by and this was on a legit dirt jump and the bike hit the ground first , all thes without hand and the front wheel hit me on my chest knocking the wing outta of me and seen then i never try em again 😂😂😂
i learned it opposite cause i would always hit my knee doing it the normal way
My Headset broke in a barspin over Box JUMP :) and know every time before i barspin i Check If my Bars still spin
Everything he says sounds like a question....
Rad tutorial. Dennis comes across as a real humble dude. PEACE
The way I learned bar spins , was I went to this BMX competition and I seen this little 10 year old kid throwing bar spins and so I thought to myself , “if he can do it I can to” especially being 17 at the time hahah he literally gave me the motivation to learn bar spins so the next day I went to the skatepark and spent hours trying to learn it and finally after hours I got my first bar spin , had my wrist bleeding to but it was well worth it and now I can throw them both ways ! Sick video tho !!
At 41 I've gotten back into bmx after 25 years away. I was never very good but loved riding. Now I've got 3 parks available to me in town and a few really good riders around town. 3 months ago I bought a used bike and since day one have been spinning bars on the ground. 4 days ago I've gotten serious about getting bar spins. I can take hands off and dialed in the x-up. Today is the day I'm throwing my first one so we'll see!
How is it goin?
Scariest Bar spin is trying to relearn them @ 40 yo. Love you guys❤
42 and getting back riding myself, Dennis quickly has become my favorite rider 🤘 forever Pat 🤘
I'm left foot forward. Learned bars with my right hand at first. Even learned trucks like that. Then I learned bars the "right" way later, and they feel so much better. 😂
You can barspin so easily Brandon :D
Hey I know this guy
Same here, left foot forward, barspins clockwise. Did learn oppos and they did feel better when i started doing 180bars with oppo bars. Learned 180 bars doing oppo 180s. Ive done trucks in 3 out of 8 possible ways. 😂 such a waste, should have trained doing oppo bars more
My bar spin story, so I was a year into riding and I really wanted to always learn bar spins so I mastered mastered pick up bar spins, then threw a half bar and then the full bar spin came right after that, had my seat all the way up with kneepads on from pinching the seat so hard my knees would get rashes 😂, 2 years later I can barspin almost anything i can straight jump and getting my opposite bar spins on 🔒 lock
my shoulder popped out trying to land a 180 bar so my shoulder was literally ripped out.. but after this injury i’ve overcome my fear and re-learned bars!
This was amazingly produced. Well done Dennis and Fudger!
31 years old here, and barspins have always escaped me. I was giving them a try again today, and landed my first legit, hop bar, followed by 3 more decent ones. I'm super stoked to finally have gotten them, and want to keep working on them so I can add them to my riding more.
Coolest barspin I did was probably at the 9 stair in my highschool (Rancho Buena Vista) my senior year. Was a part of my "Graduation Edit". It's on Vimeo somewhere still from back when Vimeo was legit 😅
Great little tutorial Dennis :D
I straight up learned my switch bars from Dennis by watching his videos years ago and realizing exactly what he talked about how his were naturally to the right. And I always watched a bike wobbled between his knee. Another rule of thumb is when I’m throwing a regular bar i point my front foot toe up and throw the bar against it it creates a lateral pressure which allows you to throw the bar more crispy. For switch when the bike wobbles let the seat wobble into your left knee. That’s where your stability comes fromLiterally learned that from watching Dennis it’s rad to see it contextualized here
Word up champ!
Ill be 50 next month and just cut my bars down to 27.5 to aide in this journey to learning bars. My favorite barspin came from Ron Wilkerson at the Haro show at Rockville BMX in the mid 80's. He and Brian Blyther used to absolutely murder those shows. Thanks for the how- to!
Ye$!
That’s so cool that you learn them throwing the bars halfway! I learn my bar spins that way as well. Til this day I still love the half-bar feeling. The coolest half-bar I did was a 180 - half-bar over a 6ft spine in my hometown . Sucks I don’t have footage of it. Some day i well go back and give it a go again. 🤘🏼
I have done them buuut I have many battle wounds from em. 22 stitches to a bloody butthole from landing on a peg. Alot of times bike drops just a tad under me and I can't catch the bars at all
When I was a kid I had a hand me down 1987 gt performer frame that I upgraded with some “modern” parts. I had cut down haro knee saver 2 handlebars. They were insanely narrow so I though I would barspin no problem. I tried sending it over a dirt jump that was a pretty good size because I felt I needed time to do the trick. I missed the bars with both hands and slammed pretty good. A guy watching poured beer on my cuts to clean them off because that was the only liquid around. I’m 36 and still can’t barspin
my problem is I am goofy so right foot forward but throw comfortably with my left hand still yet to break that mental barrier considering i am eager to land whips so bars can wait
WD-40 for grip installation it sounds like some sorcery
It works. It's throttle grippy for a little while and then locks right in.
Love that there’re a bunch of us 40+ still out here riding. ❤
Goofyfooted for life
Thank you for the video🤙
I am left foot forward and I learned barspins "oppo" Now I can barspin regular, and I have not done an oppo bar in 3-4 years. When I first learned I learned half bars. One of my first street clips was a half bar down an indoor loading dock that I will always remember. This video definitely motivates me to start throwing oppo bars! One time and probably one time only, My chain broke and my friends and I were filming for a 2 minute promo so I filmed a 180 half bar up a bank to fakie half bar down the bank! Haha time flies!! Thanks for the awesome video.
Barspins are something I would like to get back after all these years. At 56 they are very scary! 🤣
That makes so much more sense why my barspins feel wild (I'm L foot forward spin with the R hand). My story is that once I was asked to do a how-to for BMX Plus on 6 tricks on a picnic table but I would have to throw a bar off the table to complete the full 6 tricks. I was not one that was very good at them but in the end I tossed em and we got the photo and the 2 page spread got in the mag. It was in December 2007 if i'm not mistaken.
My barspin story : I'm 51 and did my very first bar spin in 1993 but my last one last week was much funnier. I wanted a full run filmed and @philippecantenot was filming - this rider is one of the most famous BMX UA-camrs in France.
After various tricks I did a barspin on a step up but did not correctly catch the bar. I crashed and my bike fell down straight on Philippe's legs. He jumped up, but not enough. .. my bike threw him down hard from the step up to the lower level... but thankfully none of us got injured and we laughed a lot.
I then tried the complete run again and pulled it clean this time... Happy ending (and funny clip to be soon shared)
Sorry about that Philippe 🙂
Stéphane "Shogun" Meneau - France
.....and you will not have to send me the grips : I'll come soon to San Diego (and around) to ride.... never too old to shred !
When I used to ride I was right foot forward and spun left, for whatever reason, as I got taller and lowered my seat, I became shit at locking bar spins in nearly any way BUT with spins I could throw em and still somehow not lose the bike from underneath me. I eventually did a 360 bar bar over our box jump and even pulled 180 bars over it, but straight bar spins became really off for me and straight double bars, I don’t think I ever did over the box. Lol.
Same deal over the spine, I could blast 180 bars and truck drivers but a straight air barspin was sketch cause for whatever reason, the bike was more likely to escape me 🤷♂️
I was always a weird rider. Same weird stuff with straight tailwhips ofer the box, I didn’t know what to do with my feet and felt like they looked like garbage so straight tailwhips over the box were ALWAYS with a Superman full extended out too and I would whip the bike back to my feet at very the last second. Lol
Back last september I finally threw the bars off something bigger than a curb. It was a gap to upledge going fast. The energy I got from knowing I can barspin bigger stuff has had me progressing every session and now bspinning small stairsets. I love bmx and switch bars are the best trick
I learned barspins the same way Dennis did. Left foot right handed. On a haro Dave mirra 540 air with a Dave Mirra signature seat. Black and white.
Did a rail hop bar down a stair set in front of a casino in Atlantic City onto the board walk. Lots of navigating to get the right timing to miss any people walking by. A crowd formed, people had no idea what I was going and didn’t understand it. It was for a video project so I really wanted to get it done. Side bar, did and hefty ledge to ledge gap at a skatepark then decided it was a great idea to do a full speed bar spin off the second ledge which resulted in a hand slip and road rash slide haha.
Dennis is my all time favorite rider but this wasn’t the best HOW TO. After further examination he throws them the EXACT same way with both hands so his slow motion explanation was kinda silly. Not many real tips besides “pinching the seat real good.” He learned them naturally in a sense so it’s hard for him to explain honestly vs someone who maybe struggled with them for a minute. The half bar idea is pretty good tho actually I’m gonna try that with oppo bars. The back story and highlight clips definitely made this video!
Switch bars look the coolest! when I used to ride like 5 years ago I liked the way nollie switch bar out of banks felt. You can dip it on the catch and pull it back up. I learnt nollie 1 bar and nollie truck with normal barspins but nollie switch was so much more hype for me.
Love Dennis Enarson ❤
Dude's fully radical!
Excellent bro!
👍
Scariest barspin was the first one for sure.
Knowing that your 90% about to get f$@clef is the worst feeling but with time becomes the most exciting.
my scariest barspin is just trying it opposite on flat 😭😂
i learnt halfbarspins on a real jump when i was 16 , i just learnt trucks at 42 😂 keep shreddin
I learned wonky should I change my foot position or my spinning direction?
My barspin story is about getting sacked countless times over and over trying to learn feeble bars because I suck ass at barspins
If you go look at that walking bridge in person, it is so terrifying thinking of doing a trick down that gap. Legend
Bar spins hated JNCOS. That’s my bar spin story.
I still can't do one 😂. All of these 'how to' vids really simplify the motion required, and in theory... They should be simple... The practical side beats me, and I even have the scars to prove it, haha! I shall aim to land ONE before my 40th bday next year 🫣
Learned barspins a whole lotta years ago. Then went to NJ and saw John Jennings miss his grip and impale himself on his bars. Took me years to even try one again. 😮
Craziest Barspin. Was the First time I threw a Bar with complete protection on both Knees. Then landing the bar straight through cracking my NUTS. And never threw again for almost a decade.
I learned opposite bars naturally when I was young riding scooters. It never transferred to bikes though. I've been riding for 18 years and I've tried opposite bars over 100 times throughout the years but cant land em. It only recently occurred to me that because of my bitch legs being slightly bowlegged it doesnt allow me to pinch the seat really well. Regular bars feel too unnatural. I've tried them 10 times and gave up. I just stick to moto whips and and lookbacks. #styleoveranything
Back in the day, me and one of my old riding buddies Josh were out cruising around hitting up local street spots with a few buddies, and Josh isn't the most talented rider, he could hold his own but talked a big game. He could wall-ride cruise around and could hit pretty big stair sets but nothing super technical. Well we're all riding around doing our thing and these girls are eyeing us cause were at this cool little bank-to-ledge spot. They come over curious and ask what kind of tricks we can do, ofcourse Josh starts spouting off "do you know what a barspin is?" and me and the other guys are all looking at each other like "yeah f***in right" Then Josh shows them the motion sitting down and tells them "see those stairs? I can barspin down those." Of course their amazed and want to see it, Josh could x-up pretty well but we all knew there was no chance he could land a barspin if he tried, so were all like "yeah lets see it" knowing theres no way he would actually try. He starts pedaling towards this 3 or 4 stair, not too big, and were sh*ting bricks thinking hes going to hurt himself trying impress these girls he throws the barspin, and somehow by the grace of god he caught the damn bars and his feet blew right off both pedals, the girls didn't notice any difference of course, and road back like it wasnt nothing. The girls were amazed but wasnt enough for Josh to get their numbers, unfortunately. But the rest of the years I road with Josh I didnt see him throw another barspin. Still astounds me that this happened.
I have only done a barspin laying on the ground on my back. Even then i have jammed a finger. I have never noticed how people throw them. It makes a lot of sense the way you explained it. I ride goofy foot. Early on i did not know how to spin. I ride right foot back spin to the left on three’s, cannot spin to the right🤔. I shall try your bar methods on my back on the ground. Seams logical.
I remember when I was younger learning barspin I was left foot foreword and I took a couple years and I almost had them then things changed . I stopped and could never get to where I was. Just learned footjams still have my 180s and 360s but to scared to throw the bars lol
Scariest barspin was down a drop during a jam. Caught knuckles and corrected it but on footage I almost collapsed haha
Funniest barspin I was at the park and learned them to flat on an A frame and my friend Justin showed up and I said “hey justin check this out! This is for you!” and I forgot to pinch and got the worst nutter of my life hahah
Man that’s why I have such a problem spinning with barspins because I have always thrown with my left hand but I’m right foot forwards. I don’t know why it just always felt normal that way.
I Don't have a cool story with barspins other than breaking 3 teeth and breaking my pathfinder bars in one go with a flyout 180 bar hahaha (I'm really husky).
I’m 49 years old. Been riding since 84. Still can’t bar. I will bar before I must give up the bike due to age or injury.
👍🤙🖖
I’ve been riding for 10+ more years and never learned them 😀 5 years ago I could throw one foot barspin with the leg out squeezing my bike but then I had a ACL on me knee and that was it .
The craziest barspin I saw my friend did was from a roof to a sharp small hill and down there was a basketball field from concrete. It's a pretty popular spot in my area and many riders got a really bad crash there. 😢
The roof is over 4meter height
Worst bar spin crash was trying a double peg to bar out front wheel nosed dived right into a parking block flew over my bars. Back to the spot 3 months later for redemption. Parking block gone and landed pegs to bar while cheering into crashing in bushes 😂
The scariest bar spin i ever did was a switch bar over a quarter to bank at my local (right foot forward left bar) the bars smacked my knees and came to a dead stop then with my left has i had to continue busing the bars around. Barely landed it and survived but all my friends at the skatepark thought it was cool
I have this problem where I can’t control how high I bunny hop so I’m always hopping high af and when it came down to me learning to throw bars I would hop high af and double bar and as crazy as it sounds I learned to double bar flat before learning regular bars and I also ride goofy left foot forward and throw with my right
i was always scared of barspins and hit the hell out of my knees everytime i tried em. Until one day i was at the skatepark next to my town and asked someone to do one, he did it so beatifully that I said to myself that I need to make it happen, but I was pretty wasted from that days session. I thought about it the whole night and when I woke up, i drove to the local park, hopped a couple times and then just did it first try. Thats basically the story to my first barspin, to me it was a magical feeling to just get it done.
Scariest barspin was the 20' wedge to wedge gap at Cunningham in San Jose. Wasn't hard but if things went wrong going that fast... don't even wanna think about that.
Can't do real bar spins legit so I wheelie barspin did one off a park bench over a sleeping homeless one time in Boston when I was spending the summer there as a as a student traveling abroad 😂 🍻 🌪️
When I first learned opposite bars spins I would throw with my left and catch underhand with my right hand
Rick Moliterno coaster brake spine tail tap to let’em spin, triple or quad. So rad seeing in-person back in the day at rampage skatepark!!
wow, i wish youtube existed when i was riding. i learned left foot forward, throwing the bars with the right hand and they never felt totally comfortable.
My scariest barspin would probaly be on this 2 block style bench I barspined over a sitting down stranger they got mad
My scariest bar spin was over a rail and a 6 stair. I have long necks on my whip now just thought I'd share. Have the video of it too
I throw with my left but am right foot forward. No wonder I have been having issues learning them on fly outs.
Craziest barspin for me is the one that hadn't happened yet because my bike is being pieced together from source
my craziest bar was a manual to nollie bar going down a ledge at joyride150! Ha
scariest bar i have done is a fakie bar, i was stressing about it because im not good at barspins, i usually dont catch it in the air which is why i was afraid
I'm the man at barspins in my dreams, then I get all hyped to go ride and I then wimp out 😂 I tried one into a foam put once and got bars to the gut
