Heyyyyy lovelies, in this video I am creating some Jesmonite coasters using Serviettes and Decoupage. I have never tried this before on any surface so I was so nervous to use napkins or serviettes on Jesmonite as I really didnt know the outcome. The beauty of serviettes with decoupage is that the possibilities are endless. I purchased these serviettes from TESCO so I cannot link them. The Mould in the video is the round coaster mould from Molds and Shapes.

I used to do a great deal of decoupage until my tremors got too bad. I used all different surfaces and never had a rough texture. When you place the serviette onto the coaster use a piece of rolled up cling film to dab the surface to even out the bumps. Another good technique is letting the glue dry. Lay the serviette onto the mould, cover with grease proof paper and use a dry iron to melt the glue into the serviette.

These are so cute! Really love the gold! So the best glue to use is decoupage glue and also Mod Podge works fine. The surface might be rough due to the wrinkles. Instead of using a roller, use cling film and gently smooth out the wrinkles with your fingers. 😊

Also make sure you seal them, another tip use a little glue on your finger to peel the layers on the napkins

This is the reason decoupage folks use Mod Podge. It is white glue (PVA) but has an additive that levels it off and forms a hard shell - no bumps! And, you brush it on the piece, add the paper and then put a coat directly over it. You do not have to wait for the first part to dry before the top coat. It is advisable to do thin coat and then you can add a second coat later. There are multiple types of Mod Podge. I prefer either a matte or a satin , rarely use the gloss, but they all work the same way. Great choice of paper! For a first shot, you did a terrific job!

    Hi Claire,
I have done coaster with other paper and used modpodge. I have the same issue of hot mugs or cold glasses sticking to the coaster. Even if it’s not damaging the coaster, it’s not nice that it sticks to the coaster every time.
I’ve tried other finishings as waterproof polycrilic for indoor wood 🤣 i still need to test that again with the glasses. I also did a test with epoxy but it was my first time with epoxy so I’ll have to sand down a bit and do a finishing layer.
I got the ideas of polycrilic and modpode from Ingrid Blackburn.
I use actually plaster cast for the coaster because it’s cheaper than jesmonite in Germany. And i use my (geli) prints for the coasters. So i have plenty of coaster waiting for the right finishing to be gifted. Let me know if you find a proper finishing that doesn’t get glue. Do you think the epoxy layer will do? I just purchased a UV resin to try next week. I think is a premix of epoxy 🤣

To help remove that last layer of napkin, you can use a small piece of scotch tape!

Heyyyyy Eve .. I think as its decoupage you could use Mod Podge 😍😍 but Mod Podge doesn't work well for direct on Jesmonite xx

Hi Claire, sorry I missed your live. I had company. I love them, they are so pretty. Really luv the red fox one. The gold pen really made them pop. Like you say with the serviettes the world is your oyster. A great video, Thank you x
