    🙌🙌🙌 QUESTION === Are you considering an online MBA program? If so, what are your reasons for going online vs in-person? If you're already in an online MBA program, what has been your experience in matching with what your reasons were for selecting the program? Reply below!

    I am almost done with my online MBA with Washington State University. It's been a great program. For any Business Degree, online or in-person, my advice is to always make sure it's AACSB accredited.

      Yes, definitely look for the AACSB accreditation. It matters to some employers. However my MBA program wasn’t AACSB accredited and I don’t think that held me back. I was fortunate though.

    Due to COVID, all IVY league classes are now online. Isn't it ironic that they talk down about online schools?
    Real world - I have met Director's , Senior managers and VP's working for Fortune 50 that graduated online. These professionals makes 200k all the way to 350K plus stock options.

    • @RichardWalls
      @RichardWalls  4 роки тому +4

      Don't know that Ivy League school admins talk negatively about online programs (maybe students think that), but I'd suspect that they know online will be a much bigger platform for education in the near future. Harvard and others, for ex, already have 6-10 week online certification programs they offer, so they know there's plenty of demand there, they probably are concerned with the "perception" that they're diluting the value of their full-time on-campus program, which shouldn't be the case, but it is a perception that many might have at this time.
      I do think it's interesting because I make mention in another video how I bet that Ivy Leagues will eventually go online, which is happening now to a degree. Would've happened eventually, but covid has accelerated that transition a little more.
      Your real world example is accurate - really, there are people at every level of an organization with every level of education. Really depends on the person, their work ethic, resourcefulness, etc.

    I've always been a bit skeptical about online-exclusive MBA offerings since MBA's are all about the networking opportunities and access to alumni network for job opportunities and startup incubators. But the problem with top schools is that they are so dang expensive so I can see why people are opting for online instead.

    • @RichardWalls
      @RichardWalls  4 роки тому +3

      Yea, I was in the same boat prior to my program. Surprisingly, the networking opportunities, depending on the size of the program, can actually be quite good. Great, even. I've met plenty of my peers already and have made a ton of connections, including w/ folks here local to my city.

      In today’s “post” covid time, most company have moved to wfh and online networking, so I see a shift in the preferences of people. Nowadays is not so uncommon to build relationship with peers and network exclusively online

    • @Immigrantlovesamerica
      @Immigrantlovesamerica 2 роки тому

      I have to disagree. If you need to be confined to a degree with another person to network, then you’re not good at networking to begin with. Networking can take place in millions of different ways. So unless you went Ivy league, getting an MBA is entirely about credentials.

    Hi Richard, absolutely awesome video! I’m from Germany and can share my experience to that topic. So I do and MBA online Programm that works like this. 80% studying at home 20% at the university. You can do also 100% at home but the university offer courses to attend. However, the online university’s are often a division or department from normal full time university’s, so the accreditation and the quality is all the same.
    Experience at the job is awesome if someone studying beside the job (also other degrees like bachelor). The HR departments always say, if some is able to work at a full time job and is studying the same amount as a full time student with similar grades, than we know that this person is super motivated, delivers consistent performance (as already proofed by studying beside the job) and the person can withstand stress and is resilient. That means people who do online Programms beside the job have always better job chances instead the full time Students. Does not mean that full time students are bad, but the others are just better and deliver higher performances. But important to say is that only a few Programms are available online, for example medicine is always full time or becoming a teacher and so on. Fortunately we in Germany do not have the Problem of overhyped marketing university brands like the Ivy League. In Europe nobody cares really if you used to study on one of the American elite university’s, because Europe has his own great university’s. The HR don’t care in 9/10 cases which university you graduated, the personality and the work experience is the most important. And let’s be honest to our selfs, the graduates from the overhyped Ivy League getting the good job because of that name Harvard or Yale not because they have magic study books with secret knowledge nobody knows elsewhere. So my idea at the end, invest in your personality as much as in an MBA degree! I wish everybody a nice and successful day!!

The degree you earn on campus and the degree you earn online will be the same (unless specifically stated). So far the content has been robust and relevant, helping me to understand the business side of leadership in greater depth. WGU won't give you an advantage with people skills or networking, but it will give you a greater understanding of business from a management perspective.

    Richard, I just hit Subscribed after watching this video and "Why a MBA..". I am in this situation currently, but more in a reverse mindset. I am currently in an online MBA (specialization, also known as graduate certificate) but having second thoughts because, now, midway through the program I realize all school work is done asynchronously. This makes it, yes, flexible in someone's busy schedule, however difficult to learn, especially if one is more of a team, collaborative, "live" learner. I am now exploring in-person MBAs and may seek to transfer programs soon.

I don't doubt you could get a good education, but I wouldn't say a WGU MBA would give you much of an advantage. It's a very new (as of '97) institution, so doesn't have much history, brand recognition, or historical rankings of any sort. I'd consider other options from more established universities and try to find one of a similar cost.

    Hi Richard, I started an MBA program at Liberty University due to their great prices for veterans. I am now at a job that helps pay for my degree. I’m wondering how other programs provide lectures? The school work is often intense and thought-provoking but there are no in-class that lectures I can watch. They usually have a video of 5-10 minutes covering a topic that the book didn’t go into, but that’s usually all the “lecturing” I get. Having never attended an online Master’s class before, I’m wondering if I should look for other options since my work will now help with tuition. Do most online MBAs offer full lectures?

    • @RichardWalls
      @RichardWalls  2 роки тому +1

      Hi - in the program I went through, there were live lectures, and they were also recorded so you can watch at a later time. Also have separate pre-recorded lessons on Coursera that you also are required to go through - equivalent to reading a textbook and doing practice questions. Generally, I've seen most online MBA programs will have live lectures.

      Hi Safina,
      Glad you found it useful! To answer your questions, it depends on your goals. If you plan on finding work in the US with the degree, finding a university that has a strong brand is important. It doesn't mean that the MBA program has to be a top 10 program necessarily, but the school itself should be recognizable. Then there's the topic of cost...if the school is not highly ranked, I'd argue that you should not pay the price of a school that is highly ranked. MBA program prices, in general, are overly expensive in my opinion, so at least find a program that delivers a good education from a good school for a good price.
      To answer your last question, many MBA programs will have specializations you can select as part of completing the program. If you have specific career goals (HR, for ex), then you may want to explore MBA programs that offer that as a specialization.
      Good luck!

I’m in the beginning of the process of doing research to find the best fit but it has been a bit confusing because there are a lot of different views whether an MBA is worth it or not, and whether an online MBA has the same weight as a regular MBA. It would be great if you can share more insight or other resources. Thank you

    • @RichardWalls
      @RichardWalls  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks Magd! Yes, those are all the reasons to pursue an online MBA. Whether an MBA is worth it really depends on your financial situation. One point to consider is what is your current income/salary? And based on your research on what an average salary for an MBA is (low 6-figures I'd say on average), and is that enough of a jump to justify spending $xxxx on the degree?
      As far as online MBAs, it really depends on the school, not as much whether it was online or not. To add, the degree itself will just say MBA, and won't say anything about you getting it online.
      I do plan on making a few more videos on the subject of MBAs, online MBAs, my personal experience, etc, so make sure to subscribe and hit the bell so you get notifications as soon as I post.

Unless they are a highly ranked program, it might be difficult to find US recruiters that find alot of value there - at that point, if you're looking at "non-high ranked programs" and want to work in the US, you would be better served to find a good, affordable program here in the states.

That said, I wouldn't rule it out entirely. What are your career goals or job you're looking for after your MBA?

      @@RichardWalls I will be looking for a project manager role in the IT industry after my MBA. I'm changing industry, that's why I feel the need to get my MBA to fill in the knowledge gap. With that said, I've applied for the Gies' iMBA program. I submitted the application 2 days past due, I really want to go there after watching your video, I hope I can get in!

      That's fantastic to hear - good luck w/ the application! As I mentioned in the video, you'll want to make sure to be proactive in networking in the MBA program to have the best chance to make that move. The iMBA program has a phenomenal network of current student and alumni, but you'll need to take the initiative.

      Thanks Akbar - glad you found it useful! For starters, you can visit the website and it'll give you alot more detail: onlinemba.illinois.edu/ . The program has been around for I believe 4-5 years at this point, and it's only gotten to be a better experience every year.
      Second, I do plan to make a video detailing my experience with the program (to summarize, it has been incredibly worthwhile!), so make sure to subscribe if you haven't already, and hit the bell so you can notified when I post a new video.

    Hi Richard, great video! What is your opinion about IUBH Online MBA?

    • @RichardWalls
      @RichardWalls  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks Rose! I had looked at that program before looks good - a good selection of concentration/specializations, including big data, which is very relevant today. Not sure it would carry much brand weight in the US, but it is an AACSB accredited (US-centric accrediting body , with a handful of European universities that have it) which is a plus. Price point is also good.
      Depends a bit on where (country) you intend to work.

    Are there any courses that you would suggest before applying for an MBA?

    • @RichardWalls
      @RichardWalls  4 роки тому +4

      Hi James,
      I wouldn't necessarily say it's required to take any courses before applying for an MBA, but I'd recommend going to Coursera.org and exploring some coursework in marketing, finance, accounting, and management.
      Best part of it is that the course content is free to go through (if all you're looking to do is become familiar with MBA material), and some of the most recognized universities in the world have their content here.
      Good luck!

    I've been looking at the Executive MBA program at Quantic School of Business and Technology. I'd love to hear your thoughts as someone taking another disruptive online program.

    • @RichardWalls
      @RichardWalls  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Samuel,
      Looked into the program in more detail, and there are certainly some interesting elements to it. I'm not one to recommend institutions that haven't been around very long, like this one, as the brand doesn't have much, if any, recognition. I think ultimately it depends on your goals. I think this program can offer a solid education on business concepts, as do many others, so I think it could help to the extent that you're more knowledgeable in business and can be more effective in your current role, which can, in turn, help position you for other opportunities.
      But I'd be hard pressed to imagine any recruiter giving an MBA from this program much weight - you'd have to rely mostly on your work experience and previous performance to show what you're capable of.

    Hi Richard, I will be started my online MBA with Quantic School of Business and Technology, what is your honest opinion about the credibility of this institution?

    • @RichardWalls
      @RichardWalls  2 роки тому

      Hi TK - I did another video on Quantic. I think its fine; content and user interface looks good and modern. As far as credibility, I don't know that its quite there yet...would take many more years to earn a reputation. Looks more like an MBA that companies pay their employees to do because its inexpensive and is a good education. But it's not something I'd consider to be a door opener to new companies or industries. At least not yet.

      I don't see any accreditation from AACSB, EQUIS, or AMBA, the latter two of which would be the primary accrediting bodies in Europe. Don't know much about the school (this one appears to be relatively new) There are better, accredited, options out there for the price.

    Hi Richard, great video. Do you see university ranking has an impact when comes to selecting online MBA program for a working adult?

    • @RichardWalls
      @RichardWalls  3 роки тому +5

      Hi SeeKai Tan, thanks for the comment! University ranking I believe is important to an extent. It's one of many variables to consider, but you certainly want to aim for a university that is *established* and has a strong global (or regionally at least) reputation. Doesn't need to be a Top 10 school, but the better the ranking, so long as the school aligns with your finances and career goals, should be the aim.

    • @RichardWalls
      @RichardWalls  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Vimal,
      Don't have a particularly high opinion of it. Not accredited by AACSB or ACBSP, which are typically associated with most mainstream universities and business schools. Although the price point is great, I'd look elsewhere for a degree at an institution (i.e. university) w/ more brand recognition.
