The Floating Farms of Bangladesh - BBC News
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 вер 2024
- Bangladesh is home to the world's largest river delta and prone to frequent, devastating flooding.
Farmers here are expanding an ancient technique of building floating farms that simply rise and fall with the swelling waters.
In times of rising sea levels, could this offer a solution to food security problems?

@NOVA- PUBG MOBILE my experience would suggest that its completely opposite, in the cities the people steal ,kill , burgle, loot a lot more plus city people are inconsiderate to others. although that might be a bit biased coming from me

Fascinating. Bangladesh is so fertile, and in the past they have been a victim of their own success, but now, with population growth under-control, they will hopefully grow rich and prosperous.
Our population growth rate was 1% in 2018. It is rapidly decreasing.

Damn.... no chemicals and good crop, that's sounds kindof good. Should have shown more kinds of vegetables, grains or leafy vegges that grow this way tho, only one kind is not very reassuring/satisfying but it's alright , good work Bbc. I didn't know this.
those are simply the crops that are most profitable to sell, but plenty of pseudograins like amaranth, or fruits like tomatoes, can grow on these floating farms. really anything that doesnt mind/needs lots of water.
Chemical fertilizer would just wash away since its just floating in water and raining all the time. The only chemicals one should be concerned about are chemical preservatives, but as far as I know, they are mainly used on fish.
Being a Bangladesi let me tell you it is a 100% true fact that farmers around here dont really use any harmful chemicals that could damage the land.Thats why our vegetables are so fress
@Z3U5 Bruh organic crops are filled with chemical in transport and storage system, so "ORGANIC" is a excuse for high price.

Since the dawn of civilisation, we (Bengali) have a good relation with agriculture. The twentieth century is remarkable as a period in which the Agriculture reigns Supreme in Bangladesh. Bangladesh, an agricultural country, where the people and agriculture have a deep intimation. Agriculture, the first economic sector, which has many possibilities. It plays a great impact in our economy. Every year, the farmers of Bangladesh produce a good number of crops and they sell those crops at a good price. Bangladesh, a developing country, will be able to develop its economy by agriculture within short time.
But most of the farmers in Bangladesh are poor.
As a result, they don't get enough facilities to grow crops more. If we can provide more facilities, they will play an important role in our economy.
However, I invite Bangladeshi people to help the poor farmers. If we can ensure more facilities for them, our economy will reach the highest peak.
I want to thank the BBC for representing such kind of agricultural method of Bangladesh to the world.
I'm proud to be a Bengali.!

Well well this video should have been published eight years ago, very unfortunate that BBC has done it in 2019, quite unexpected from BBC I guess! This method of cultivation is called (locally) Baira cultivation, using rots of hyacinth(water) as soil and fertiliser. Very organic farming indeed. Best example of adaptability too.
I am from Bangladesh. But living in Malaysia.. Thanks for share it.. ❤
Government should Focus on Farmer and Agriculture, Its our resources. There is no resource in Bangladesh without Water /Rivers/Fish/agriculture and our Farmer. There is no Oil and Gold in our Country but We have the unlimited Golder Fiber thats mean Jute. Respect to Our Farmers. 🇧🇩

@@danielgorzelniak3209 What?
Netherlands is below sea level, they fix there problem. Bangladesh could ask for help.
Hey bro,Netherlands help us delta plan 2100 to fix our problems.this project are started...
Rain comes from above though.
Our government signed a deal with Netherland about that. We have a plan called "Delta Plan 2100" to solve the natural problem.
Actually no Need for help, just build floating houses and farms
yea, don't copy Netherland, it is waste of money. They will build huge wall for water... waste of money. Also, if your land is dry people will want to take it.
I hope bangladesh completely avoids fertilizers and goes organic.
Billy Graham Actually we use organic fertilisers
@@Shinigaami5 Not entirely true. Overuse of phosphates is one of the current environmental challenges.Notice all that water hyacinth profusion? Its because of all the excess fertilizer that runs into the rivers and ponds. This was such a big problem because it chokes off sunlight and oxygen out of the water and kills fish and other life that they actually considered using horrible things like napalm to try to tackle it. This video is wonderful because apart from the flood resistant farming and the healthy organic food it turns the abundant hyacinth into a productive resource. Still don't know if it helps the fish and other aquatic life but its a start.
Bruv we only use oraganic fertilizer
It is actually not possible. Bangladesh spends a lot of money in Agriculture because the government has been trying to become self sufficient on food. Given that Bangladesh is one of the most populous nations in the world, GMOs and fertilizers are essential in self sufficiency.
@@Shinigaami5 Na jene kotha na bola bhalo.
This is the sort of ingenuity and resilience we need more of. 👏🏻
This is South western part of Bangladesh ❤
Hope the water will always keep clean
Actually the floating farming technique ensures the cleanliness of the water by some organic processes which is an added benefit of the method. That was not covered in the video though.
