Canadian Trackside Guide lists the weight of an SW1200RS as 222000 - 226000 lbs whereas the 7300 are 246000. I am not sure whether this is a heavier engine block 12V-645C versus 12V-567C or extra ballast
I've never noticed that before! A little searching came up with this photo that shows the additional plating pretty clearly. www.flickr.com/photos/mtlwestrailfan/14421248150/sizes/o/
A small shortline a few miles west of me has one of the ex 7300 series in its roster, been trying to get videos and/or photos of it for years but they rarely run, besides the fact its during weekdays when I normally can't get out to catch them running.
David Othen Well, I got a chance to go out & get photos today. Had it in a nice spot as well. Poor thing is beat to hell. (Someday I'll get her in action) 1: hostthenpost.org/uploads/ecd3b7620bffc1d702071719228e39c3.jpg 2: hostthenpost.org/uploads/f3a03b7392e6e965b167a557f45a0a49.jpg 3: hostthenpost.org/uploads/e259ce0dae8e64aad69c06d72cbcfeea.jpg
No Na Me 1216 was probably not a rebuilt unit like the 7300s because it still has the CN spark arrestors. When CN rebuilt SW1200Rss into the 7300 series the spark arrestors were normally removed.
I love the near hit at 13 30 mark that little car would have been squashed against the SW1200 alone. Also how come there different sizes of the spark resisters on the 1342?
That is a small private crossing into Fader Industries. There is a STOP sign but not everyone observes it! However the crews do keep an eye open for vehicles approaching!
It is certainly possible though I have no photos of the 7300s in the Halifax area until after the Bridgwater section closed. May be someone else has photographic evidence of them in Bridgewater - Duane Porter at the H&SW Museum in Lunenburg might know.
..........ohhh!!........ this is something I have been wondering about for years.since the 80's......... Those freaky looking double smokestacks mounted on a horizontal cylinder ( engine #1363) are spark arrestors...!!
thank you for the swithers videos and rest n power sir
Nice! Not many pups left out there.
What did cn rebuild them for anyway ? I know now , the sweeps cost to much
RIP David Othen you and your videos and post will be missed by so many! :'(
he has some great vids. sad to hear!
Cool vid. Like those sw1200s. @ 3:24...you don't see too many guys riding the footboard anymore. That's steam type old school there.
It’s funny cuz 7304 at start of this video is still alive and running at my work at Hamilton Parkdale yard switch cars I love this old girl
Notice the beefed up frame sill under the walkway of 7300 for added ballast. These units could pull at slow speeds.

7300, 01' 7303-06, 7309 and 7311 were regulars in Vancouver. I used to love switching with them.
Good to hear they were popular with crews. I always liked the visibility on the Alco switchers when running backwards.
Very good video. I always like these engines.
+joe Thank you. Glad you enjoyed the video.

No Na Me Hope you are able to do so soon. Can you ask the railroad staff when they expect to run a train?
I would love to, but I think they might only have 3-5 employees. And besides that, they're never around from the many times I've been there.
No Na Me Perhaps they would like some publicity. Phone the General Manager.

Love the old "Pups"
The quintessential yard shunter
last time I saw an old Loco like this was 4 years ago Vancouver while cn was training it's new trainees

Just a total beauty, sites and sounds! Treasure! Flange squeal is... part of this theater. Sigh!
Nice video David. If I am not mistaken some of the 7300 series were used in Bridgewater weren't they?

David Othen I subbed both of you! Please sub back. Thanks!

Yes CN used these on many GM locomotives.
One of these, I think 2, are in Ontario
+Mew The Terrific Adorable Delicious Cookie I think several went to Canac and they have leased them out.
CN has a couple at MAC in toronto I believe and one at a CN transload facility in Hamilton (CN Parkdale) as of this year
awesome catch thanks 😀why do people like to graffiti trains?
