@@kassinwonderland22 No one said it was? But I think you'll find that playing the Emcee requires humour and comedic timing, something he doesn't get to display in his movie roles.

His voice is so malleable! Love all the resonant-y bits (Go Rooound on Money sounds amazing). Jessie's voice is so rich and glorious, even under sung. Love this recording, there is so much character in here and you can tell these people were having the time of their lives performing this show, which always means the audience feeds off it so much.

So the whole point of no flim recording is that it kind of ruins the experience of seeing the show and that its supposed to feel as if you're actually in a nightclub. The experience wouldn't translate well outside of actually seeing this in person. The whole premise is what happens in the kit Kat Club stays in the kit cat club

    • @kpwxx
      @kpwxx Рік тому +4

Same! I will keep hoping! I think with the ease of modern technology available, all productions should aim to try and get a recording if possible so that it can be enjoyed for years to come by people around the world later on. Of course ultimately it's up to the production, cast etc and I absolutely support their right to choose not to, but as many as possible would be great.
@TheAmypond22 I know that watching on a screen is not going to be as immersive as seeing the show in person (I've seen this Cabaret so I know that the immersion of truly feeling like you are *in* the Kit Kat Club is sooo well done), but it's also more accessible for a lot of people due to disability/illness, finances or geography. People should go to the theatre because it's amazing and they are supporting wonderful performers, creatives, front of house teams and art, but also imo we should be working so as many people as possible can experience that art eventually in a way that works for them. Especially with really thought provoking and challenging works like Cabaret. Side note that they can also do some fun, inspiring and creative things with recordings too that aren't possible live!

27:02 in the original 1966 version there was a song Herr Schultz sings at the party called “Meeskite” telling the story of an ugly kid who marries an ugly girl and has a beautiful child. It makes many references to him being Jewish and it’s implied that’s what a “Meeskite” is.
So in “If you could see her” the MC said “she isn’t a Meeskite at all.” They wanted it to be “Jewish” but it wasn’t allowed back then. The 1968 London production might have used “Jewish” but I don’t remember. They did it in the movie and it was kept in subsequent productions.

There was a funny story and epic "BURNNNNN!" involving the song "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" a few years ago. Short version:
Richard Spencer is a "world famous on the internet" American white supremacist and neo-Nazi troll. He was having a Twitter war with Josh Marshall, a liberal journalist and talk show host. Marshall told Spencer that Spencer's followers should go back to the 1930s. Spencer responded with "No, tomorrow belongs to us!" and posted the 'Tomorrow Belongs to Me' scene from the film CABARET, clearly one of his favorite film moments ever.
This brought a response from a good friend of Marshall's, a man who was then Secretary of State of (Marshall's home state of) Missouri, Jason Kander. The response could not have been more perfect.
“Hey buddy, that song you love was written by my uncle. He’s been married to my other uncle for 40 years. And he’s a Jew. Sing it proud.” (Jason Kander is the grand-nephew of John Kander, the composing half of Kander & Ebb, creators of CABARET (and CHICAGO and KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN and other hits), and in fact attended his uncle's wedding in 2010 when he was able to legally marry his partner of many years in Canada.
It's not common for people to make a professional troll shut up, but Kander's response did it. His grand-uncle doesn't tweet, but did later express delight. (John Kander is still alive as of this writing, 95 and living with his husband, Albert Stephenson, in New York.)

In the original production, the twist at the end of "If You Could See Her" received a lot of backlash, so they changed it to "she isn't a meeskite at all" which was referencing an earlier song (and a Yiddish word) that is now cut from the production. I believe it was only the Sam Mendes production that put back in "she wouldn't look Jewish at all" because the meeskite reference tended to go over the heads of most people, and it didn't have enough of an impact.

Just stage managed Cabaret this year: the end of If You Could See Her still gets a gasp/reaction. Tomorrow Belongs To Me has a lot of allusions to Deutschlandlied (the national anthem, specifically the first and second stanzas-- the ones not used post WWII) and if you think the Kickline is long, the Entr'acte is over five minutes.

I think the linden reference is not just a tree in general, but the linden and the stag (mentioned a couple lines earlier) are both big symbols in Germanic and Norse mythology, which they were trying to link their movement to, as a "continuation of a glorious past that's been stolen from us" thing.

75 Reichsmarks in 1931 would be, very roughly, about £500 pounds today depending on how you want to slice it (e.g. for groceries it would be less than 500, though what Cliff pays for a room per month in a working class Berlin neighborhood which would today be more than 500 pounds). There was extremely high unemployment so opportunities for quick money was hard to make, especially for a foreigner.
Fun fact: at the height of hyperinflation in 1923 the same room would have cost several BILLION marks per month.

14:58 Well I was in a Regency LARP and a boy gave a girl a coconut (both unmarried) and it was a whole schandal- so... My friends, I guess?
But in all seriousness I could tell you a LOT about the history of the pineapple as an exotic fruit and a status symbol. So if you're interested in that, let me know. The short answer is yes, in the 1920s and 1930s people absolutely did give pineapples as gifts to girls they were courting.
EDIT: also, shoutout to that one time my grandma gave me a whole pineapple after a school play. My grandma always had the weirdest gifts after my performances. I did not appreciate the historical context behind giving pineapples as gifts back then tho. 😂 I was mostly embarrassed my grandma made me "look weird". Just bring flowers like the other grandmas... I ate the whole thing in the car ride home, I was really hungry... In hindsight a way better gift than flowers.
So you can add my grandma to that list too. Also pretty sure my stepdad once gave my mum a pineapple at some point, but that might just have been a case of "I had this pineapple but if I kept i at my house it would've gone bad, so I brought it with me."

At first I thought, "am i biased because I felt like Grey was a tour de force and Cumming was a revolution?" By the time we reached Frenchie's introduction in Wilkommen that excuse dissolved.
I'm now on So What and I enjoy this performance very much. it's expressive and sung in a way that is different but also not off-putting. As I move on I'm hoping Redmayne doesn't ruin the rest of his appearances too much.
