The interweaving of Mitch's beautiful tenor and Avi's incredibly warm bass in this brings me shivers (not to mention all of the other voices just flowing in and out of each other). I feel this is a truly spectacular arrangement and performance.
i'm a wholehearted Pentaholic, and for every amazing, eye-and-ear popping, unbelievable Pentatonix arrangement, this is the one that makes me cry. Gives me the pure joy feels. Thanks for sharing this one - it gets overlooked because it's not a "show piece". Except it is. Love your reactions, and for sharing your knowledge and appreciation.
Bass guy is Avi Kaplan, if you haven’t checked out any of his solo music yet you absolutely should! Most people start with Change on the rise, his first solo release after leaving PTX.
Another of Pentatonix's beautiful 5-part harmony songs - no beatboxing needed, just let Kevin sing! Poor Scott - he tried so hard not to move, but couldn't help but use his hands to get out those last two notes! Oh...and Kirstie looks absolutely gorgeous in this one!
Mitch's vocal performance isn't flashy in this, but it is a favorite because he makes such pure, beautiful choices. A lovely balance from Avi's low all the way up.
The bass is Avi, their original bass. Now they have Matt, after Avi left amicably in 2017. It tickles me to see you discovering the beauty that is Pentatonix!! And you always notice and get excited by the same things in their songs that I did when I 1st heard them. That's rare for me. Once you start watching bts vlogs and videos of them as human beings (hopefully you'll get to that someday - if not on camera, just for your own personal joy) you will fall in love with them as we Pentaholics have. They are humble, sweet, charming and lots of times (well, usually!) very silly & hilarious. Then you will be a hopeless Pentaholic, just like the rest of us! Thank you sm for your Ptx reactions! You are one of my very favorite reactors. You are so genuine! God bless!!!
All my life, I never really liked anything Elvis, BUT I have fallen deeply in love with this version. If I wasn't already married, I would have this as my first dance song. It's too gorgeous. And Mitch's vocals AND jacket!!!! Breathtaking. Excellent reaction.
Another great reaction! I Love this version and whenever they do their part harmonies. When Avi comes in with his bass it just makes you feel like you're being hugged, it's so full and rich. Mitchs lead vocals as always are so beautiful and angelic and the support from Scott, Kevin and Kirstin just makes this so much more. I can see playing this version during weddings. Looking forward to many more of your reactions. Have a great day!
They know exactly how to make us feel exactly what they want us to feel, and they execute that strategy to perfection. Every. Single. Time. Musical and entertainment geniuses. And to top it off, they are some of the sweetest, kindest people, or angels I should say, on the planet. Thank you for continuing to react to them!
This is one of my fave Elvis songs and every time I hear the PTX version, I'm blown away again. Mitch in this one is just gorgeous and it shows his range nicely (even though we all know he can go higher), I feel like he's at his warmest in this range. Gives me goosebumps every time. And I so enjoy your commentary and pleasure in hearing their music. Superfruit is a Scott and Mitch side gig that they did for a few years when the group was younger and man oh man are they good! The difference is they have instruments (often just a piano) and the material can be more adult AND they can be SO silly and fun. They'll make you laugh when you aren't in awe of their performances. They also have a pretty extensive catalog that is worth exploring when you can work it in. They also have a few medleys (Lady Gaga, Beyonce, and more) where it's one take moving through what feels like the whole catalog of a singer and they have some music videos like The Promise and Guy.exe that are just amazing. Last thing to mention is a couple of playful videos: Frozen medley (with Kirstin) and Defying Gravity (Mitch is a Broadway star) that I know you'll appreciate. Be sure and watch past "subscribe" for the bloopers. I'll be waiting! :)
You REALLY need to see Avi Kaplan's solo work. The emotions are intense, powerful, and wide-ranging, and I can't wait to see your reactions to him being his authentic self. I'm a therapist and I use his music in sessions with clients, that's how deep his music is.
Important things to be aware of... PTX took this song in a slow 4 instead of 6/8, which I’ve stated many times before, adds so much emotional poignancy to the song. Also PTX had two rare vocal types when this song was recorded. Avi is a basso profundo and Mitch is a countertenor! These vocal types make it impossible for other a cappella groups to duplicate PTX’s sound, and the total tessitura of the group is enormous! Mitch slays on this, but the last chord is insane! It’s a an AMaj9th with Avi singing an A2! The way the chord is voiced, the overtones ring like an organ! I also love on the last chorus when Kirstie appears... it’s like the sun is coming out! Also, I believe this was the last video that Avi did with the band before he had to leave.
Great reaction, I love that they move you. The simplicity of this one is stunning. I love every single Pentatonix song and I feel that their originals are incredibly under-rated but sometimes just beautiful five-part harmony is all you need. And honestly, Mitch could sing a shopping list to me and I'd be captivated. I truly think he has the most beautiful voice in the world. I know people are going to say 'no, Dimash is the best singer in the world' and technically he is of course extraordinary, but his voice just doesn't move me the way Mitch's does. I saw PTX for the first time (despite having been a fan since 2012!) in London on 4 May and was worried my sky high expectations were not going to be met - but they were and then some. Just the best musical group in the world in my opinion.
Yes, Anita!!! Glad you got to see them this year! My pentaholic buddy Claire was there too! I get to see them here in the states in August & Claire is flying over to go with me!! VIP & I can't wait!!! They never cease to amaze me & I love them like my own children! 💜
Anita I in full agreement about Mitch vs Dimash. While I can appreciate Dimash's extraordinary talent he leaves me cold. I can listen to a song and think that's it's really beautiful but then never want to go back and listen again. Mitch brings me back hundreds of times and I never get tired of hearing him.
I am repeating myself when I tell you how much I enjoy your reactions. I love how honest and vulnerable you are. That also allows me to feel the joy of seeing someone else be floored by their talent. Also, don’t apologize for stopping the video. That’s why I watch reactions, to hear what you are thinking. I’ve already heard the song. If I want to hear the song, I will play their video. I come to your channel to hear and watch your reaction to the song. I say all this to say, keep doing what you’re doing. It works for me. 😊
I always enjoy listening to PTX with you! I discovered them during the pandemic lockdown when I delved into UA-cam looking for entertainment. And, boy, did I find it with Pentatonix in all of their configurations. They floor me every time too. I’m going to check your playlist for Superfruit. If it’s not there, I’ll be back. Peace … Okay, Scott and Mitch had a side project for a couple of years called Superfruit. It started as a vlog that included musical videos every now and then. Eventually it resulted in a full album called Future Friends that is absolutely fabulous, every song. The two of them met as pre-teens through local musical theater productions, dated for a hot minute in high school and then wound up as roomies once Pentatonix started, so there is a lot of shared history and deep friendship. Guy.Exe, Imaginary Parties and Vacation have been my favorites recently, with Deny U as maybe my all-time fave. When you’re ready to expand your PTX universe, that’s a good place to start. (Sorry to be so wordy.)
Watching you react is like re-living my own first reaction to these beautiful pieces. Thank you so much! (p.s. - I think those little arpeggios are called "bell tones")
The bass singer is Avi Kaplan who is no longer with the group. I would like to hear your reaction to his solo song “Change on the Rise” (official video). You will see it is epic in style and music as an acting coach.
Wow you hit the nail on the head. Emotional harmony is perfect. I’ve been searching for a descriptor since I first started listening to them years ago. I’ve watched them perform for years and often noticed they often don’t look at each other, when they harmonize. They look like they are listening and sharing the emotion of the song rather than focusing on the technical aspects of their vocals. Great reaction.
Definitely. If you'd like to start out with pure beauty, react to Avi's original song "All Is Well", this version performed in a church in Utrecht, Netherlands when he was on his second European tour in Spring 2022. Just him, his guitar, and the natural acoustics of the church. stunning. ua-cam.com/video/sNjbAAjF4Tg/v-deo.html
My favorite songs of theirs are always the ones they sing pure acapella, not even with beatboxing or Kevin's cello. So pure, so perfectly done, so mesmerizing.
For a non-singer/musician, you have brilliant insight into what makes PTX so special. What I have known about them from the very beginning (going back to the Sing-Off) is their talent for surprising you. Unexpected key changes, surprise chords, innovative phrasing, beautiful dissonance when you are not expecting it-they separate themselves from most other groups or performers. They don't just re-hash. They innovate. And their incredible talent and understanding of music theory/brilliant arranging-it's just incomparable. Ben Bram has a huge influence and deserves much credit, but he has absolute gold to work with.
Scott, Mitch, and Kirstin went to high school together in Arlington, TX and knew each other most of their lives and started the group. Avi had the beard and low voice ended up leaving the group but Pentatonix is perfect as always. I am a huge fan and love Mitch the most. He really needs a lot of credit with his vocal range.
Part of what you're noticing (I think) is something that Ed Boyer, who mixes their audio, does. Whenever the camera looks specifically at one member of Pentatonix, that member's voice will become slightly more distinct. If you aren't looking you don't even notice it; the difference is very subtle, but it's real. And I'm not at all sure what exactly it is that he does; I don't THINK it's a change in volume, but I don't know. Whatever it is, though, it somehow makes it easier to focus on the harmonies when you want to, without taking anything away from the main melody.
Brandon, I've been watching your PTX reactions for a while now and really enjoy the 'value add' you're trying to bring to them. You often mention things outside of the music (which isn't your training anyway) like the video composition and facial expressions they use to 'sell' the message they're trying to convey. When I started watching their videos, I found them utterly compelling (pentaholics is such an apt name for their fans), and I've been thinking about why. It goes beyond the vocal skills, interesting arrangements, superior production, and creative video design & execution. The one word which seems to capture what they have in addition to all of this is charisma. I wonder if you could talk a bit about what you think charisma is, whether that's their 'secret', which artists you find compelling & why. There are numerous impressive & talented artists and I've seen reactions to them. But for me, PTX is 'it'. I even find myself thinking they're more physically attractive than is fair, which seems a funny thing to say, but I believe it anyway. As someone who works to help performers cultivate their skills to create that sort of connection with their audiences, I'd like to know your thoughts on how to do that. (In general terms, I'm not looking for free coaching here, I'm not a performer in any way.) Thanks Again!
Love your reactions and look forward to many more with PTX - Here are a few suggestions if you have not gotten to them yet: The Prayer, Prayers For This World, Amazing Grace, MARS (written by Scott and his fiancé, Mark) - all of those hit you in 'the feels' for sure! Fun ones would be: AHA Singapore the Star Vista (live, not the video), Can You Feel The Love Tonight, CREEP (they did this on The Masked Singer a few weeks ago once their masked were removed, so you would want that live version), SING - and one with just Kirstin, Scott and Mitch 'way back' would be Superfruit Frozen Medley (I think they had one too many Red Bulls while they were playing around with this one! I laugh every time I watch it, and that has been a lot! Thank you again for your heartfelt reactions to this amazing group and for allowing US to go along this journey with you! We don't 'listen' to PTX ... we experience their musical magic! 🥰
If you have not seen it yet, I would highly recommend “recording of Evergreen album” ( ua-cam.com/video/M60SKKkQLqo/v-deo.html )! It really gives you a glimpse at how they achieve this unique sound. It was recorded during the second of the two week time allotted to record their Christmas album “Evergreen“ (which was nominated for a Grammy).
I have always loved this song. My favorite version has always been ua-cam.com/video/qdz4jqP8UWM/v-deo.html Beverly Bivens had a set of pipes. Of course I love the PTX version now too. Great reaction.
The interweaving of Mitch's beautiful tenor and Avi's incredibly warm bass in this brings me shivers (not to mention all of the other voices just flowing in and out of each other). I feel this is a truly spectacular arrangement and performance.

Their acting -- use of eye contact, head movement, expression -- is superb and very underrated.

The only way to describe their arrangements is that they are "So Right." When you hear one, it's often hard to imagine it being done any other way.
Thank you for the great reaction to this beautiful Pentatonix video. They are amazing.

This classic song, great tribute to the original, with Mitch singing like he could, and the harmonies, the fifth harmonies, beautiful

Agreed! But I’d add not to overlook their own medleys, or evolutions of… all just fabulous
I love this so much I asked my granddaughter to walk the idle to it....and she did. It was so perfect!
They are magical.
Geez love I can’t tell you how much I love this song. Yet again, it was perfection. ❤❤❤❤
For personal reasons, this is absolutely my favorite PTX cover. Thank you for your reaction! ❤
Watching you react is like re-living my own first reaction to these beautiful pieces. Thank you so much! (p.s. - I think those little arpeggios are called "bell tones")
Yes!!! to all of this comment!💜
Loved your reaction! Love the way they do this song! Can’t wait for more PTX reactions! 💕💕

Have you done any of their "Evolution of" videos yet? I think you'd be really fascinated by them!
Avi has a lot of amazing solo stuff you should check out

You should watch The Making of Evergreen to see how they work together.
Nice gentle version.
EVERYONE covers this. But it’s a good way to hear the group’s voices and harmonies.

Beautiful 5 part harmony. So good.
Yes, I have such an emotional feeling just listening to this song-- Awesome Reaction!
Soooo beautiful! I'm in tears.
The harmonies in this song sound very much like Imogen Heap. Love it.

They are the BOMB.
This arrangement is thanks to Kevin. From their Classics album. Hopefully you'll react to the Take on me lyric video.
Recommend their original, Happy Now.
This is one of my absolute faves
It’s so pretty
It's always nice to see someone else get the feel of what they do.Thank you so much.
It was great watching you appreciate this song. It is just so beautiful and well done from the highest of the highs to the lowest of the lows.
She a sweet cover of an awesome song by the legend himself!! Love your reactions!!
That was sooooo good!!! I was captivated watching each and everyone of them.
❤❤❤
I appreciate your reactions so much
Glad you like them!

Mitch high + Avi low = perfection
Listen to their cover if Seasons of Love Kirstie knocks it out of the park , was part of a Tv special
Great reaction That's Not Acting Either! #pentaholics
I think you would love to react to THE WIZARD OF AHH'S. Pentatonix and Todrick Hall
If you have not seen it yet, I would highly recommend “recording of Evergreen album” ( ua-cam.com/video/M60SKKkQLqo/v-deo.html )! It really gives you a glimpse at how they achieve this unique sound. It’s called an echo
