    Version 3 of the Arduino Nano based Spot Welder for battery welding
    This Spot Welder can be used to weld 18650 batteries. It uses a 12V car battery as welding current supply. Typically one 40Ah 440A battery delivers enough current to get good welds with 0.15mm nickel strips and even 0.25mm nickel strips. For thicker nickel strips maybe you will need bigger battery or two in paralell.
    The Welder generates a double pulse, where the first one is 12% of the time of the second one by default. Pulse time of the main pulse is adjustable by the rotary encoder and displayed on the screen in mS so you can exactly adjust the time. Its adjustable from 1 … 999 mS.

    I have the version 2.2 welder and it works great. I used it to build 2 x 80 cell lifepo4 battery packs. This makes quick work of putting packs together compared to soldering. The smaller 18650 cells can be soldered but the larger lifepo4 cells can be next to impossible to solder , thats why I bought this welder.
    I highly recommend it to everyone who puts together battery packs, I been using it connected to a fullriver 28 ah agm battery, that has plenty of power to run this welder. While small in size it has power to spare. I got good welds at 1.4 setting, and the settings go all the way to 9.9, the higher the settings the hotter the cables get when welding. Always start at the lower setting and slowly go higher until you get good welds that don't come apart.
    If you build your own welding cables, use 6 gauge copper welding cables, when I was using 8 gauge audio cables to weld, I had to use power settings between 4.0 and 7.0 and even then It wasnt sticking good, and the cables got too hot to hold after 10 minutes of welding. Copper welding cables made all the difference.

    Hi! Thanks for a nice product! I started up my V3 spotwelder today and I got perfect welds straight away :) Maybe my powersource is a bit to much, its an 760CCA battery, so the lowest setting of 3ms was enough for very strong welds in 0,15mm nickel.

    • @Nisse977
      @Nisse977 5 років тому

      @John Smith Okey! After some testing I uped the puls to 5ms. I get holes in the nickelstrips if I pull them of my batteries after welding, so that must be good enough. :)

    I purchased one of these about 2 yrs ago, love it! Recently, I acquired an old auto jump pack and decided to convert it and use it as an enclosure for this welder. Rewatching this video, I notice that you recommend not making the weld leads any longer than 50cm, I'm still using the original leads so I think I'm OK but at the back side I have lengthened the leads to where it attaches to the battery, is that OK or can I damage my unit???

    I’ve still got my V2. Not used it much, but it is great. Every job I have done it worked flawlessly.
    I’d like the V3 just because it is so nice
    My only complaint , that I rectified on my V2 was to take the board off the lead acid battery terminal and print a box for it.
    I just don’t like the idea of the board hanging off the battery terminal.
    If I do get a V3 I will have to draw up another box and get the rotary encoder on the end of some ribbon cable

    Just received mine recently!
    Quick question for you: What would you recommend for spot welding .3 mm nickel strips? I have a 610a 75ah car battery that I did some testing with up to 85 ms w/ 15% second pulse to no avail. Is there something I may be missing? Should I try sourcing a larger battery ( either higher cca or ah rating ) or simply use a higher main pulse or secondary? Thanks for any help!

    • @Malectrics
      @Malectrics  6 років тому

      0.25mm nickel strips work for me on about 30...35mS pulse time with 400 CCA battery. Dont have 0.3mm nickel but i think at 85mS it should weld. Do you get very tiny weld Spots ? If so, maybe your welding tips are to sharp. You can flatten them with some sandpaper or carefully with a hammer.

      I grabbed another battery with CCA of 750 and boom! No more TVS diode. I'm looking through your build guide right now and will try using the through hole version you posted. This: www.mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=5KP13A-E3%2f54virtualkey61370000virtualkey625-5KP13A-E3 is it, correct?

  • @andybarnard4575
    @andybarnard4575 6 років тому

    Looks great, just had a look at the schematic, have nearly all the bits already apart from the MOSFET board. The TVS diodes on the MOSFET board have Vbr = 14.4V, which is not that far from the voltage of a fully charged car battery. As they are uni-polar and the inductive spike will always be in forward direction I would have thought that higher Vbr would be preferable and a combination from other suppliers with max If of same order as the design would be OK?

    • @Malectrics
      @Malectrics  6 років тому

      Andy Barnard The TVS diodes are chosen with 14.4V VBR for the reason that these can take the most current. If you take a look in the diodes datasheet you see that the higher the voltage of the TVS diodes is the less current they can take. I also did oscilloscope measurements that showed that with these diodes the voltage spike still reaches arround 30V max. With higher voltage diodes the voltage spike would get pretty close to the mosfets maximum voltage.
      But if you do have a good idea for a better way or other diodes to protect the mosfets please let me know. I am always working on further improving the spot welder.

    • @andybarnard4575
      @andybarnard4575 6 років тому

      Thanks for the reply, I would not give advice before trying it myself..... 30V - that is some kick - I presume in the forward direction as the inductive field around the high current circuit wire collapses. Shorter cables theoretically better....
      I'm pretty sure that the 'max peak pulse surge current' is at the maximum (reverse) clamping voltage - as the voltage rises the current reduces because there is a maximum power limit. In a bi-directional diode, this is also the forward voltage, but you have (correctly) chosen a uni-directional diode and the forward voltage should normally be lower - though 30V is actually higher than the clamping voltage in this case.......
      The Vishay data-sheet does not specify forward current (strangely), though other suppliers (e.g. ST Transil 1.5KE range) specify a 'non repetitive peak forward current' for uni-directional devices which is not dependent on reverse voltage even though the reverse clamping current reduces as the voltage increases. For ST Transil, whether I choose a 13V 750A device or a 750V 13A device, max If (forward current) specified is 200A for 10mS.

      The 4 TVS diodes that are now integrated on the mosfet board do a better protection job than the Schottky diode. You could add TVS diodes to the V1 for further protection of the mosfets, but this wont have any effect on the welding quality.

      That is true for the latest V3.3. In the eralier V3's there were no resistors on the mosfet board. The 8 Pin Header has all 8 pins only connected / shorted to each other on the mosfet board V3.3 not on the arduino board V3.3. This way the V3.3 arduino board is also compatible to older V3 to V3.2 mosfet boards. If you build a V3.3 welder yourself, you can just bridge R17-R24 with some solder. • @thomaslsr6847
      @thomaslsr6847 5 років тому

      Let's try with 3 transistors.
      I mean let's say that we got 400A, 100 ms time for the double pulse. One pulse per second. and 1.3 m ohm resistor for one FET resistor. so 1.3/3 m ohm for 3 FET in parallel.
      We will have 1.3/3*10^-3 * 400^2 * 100 * 10^-3 *1 = 7W to dissipate in total
      That might be dissipated thanks to the aluminum part.

    Is the lipo strong enough for the spot welder... the spotwelder will try to draw more than 130C (650A) on a small spot weld?
    Did you try the lipo constantly while making pack with 500 welds and up?

      I have this Lipo: Turnigy Nano-Tech 3s 5000mAh 65-130C . hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-battery-nano-tech-5000mah-3s-65-130c-lipo-pack-xt-90.html?___store=en_us
      It has now done about 2000 Welds on 15mS setting. Lasts about 800-900 welds per charge. So it has only 3 charges on it. But till now no signs of a problem with the lipo.

      Thank you and will you see the fuse holder for those who dont have access to a 3d printer? or recommend a pre built one?

      @@Malectrics It's been a while - how did the lipo battery behave in the long run? Did it puff or did it hold? Now that time has passed, would you now say that a car battery would be a better choice or not?

      @@Noleenmegaair The Lipo is still in good shape, but i have only done about 3000 test welds on it. With a 600A car battery i get a bit better welding results compared to the lipo, because you can use shorter pulse times with the car battery.

    with this can i control an microwave trasformer?!!!

      The mosfets can only switch dc current. Microwave transformer needs ac current. But you could use just the Arduino Board and connect a relay to the 8-Pin Header output of the mosfet driver. So basically replace the mosfet board with a SSR relay that then switches the primary side of the microwave transformer.

    Will a 6s lipo work?

    • @Malectrics
      @Malectrics  4 роки тому

      D Bennish it needs an input voltage of 10-14V . 6s Lipo will kill it.

    All these video's I see people using 30ms or less to weld .2mm nickel strip. With a Brand new Car battery or the Recommended 3s 150C Lithium pack even at 50ms I do not get good penetration with even .15 nickel.

    It's not a welder, it's an acid battery killer. Using transformer to decrease voltage and increase current? No, just short-circuit a battery. Short-circuit current is not enough, should I use a transformer? No, just use two batteries!
