Thank you for this info, my mini fridge stopped working so opened the back of mind. I looked in the back and saw the black box, and removed the relay. Ordered me another from Amazon and replaced it myself. It now works fine for those ladies you can do it, I'm 70 yrs old and I did it.
Yes, true! I plan to fix my little salvaged fridge. I fixed a huge fridge before with a change of starter motor - same type of fix. Very empowering when you can save an appliance from city dump.
Gotta love the people with no time to look on UA-cam in order to help themselves save a few hundred bucks and who give up their treasures. Dustin, you the man. Keep reducing those mountains of ‘garbage’ to molehills.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! Because of you, I fixed my mini-fridge ALL BY MYSELF for $9 using the part link you provided! This was completely out of my realm, as I have never thought of myself as someone who could repair an appliance. I purchased my Hamilton Beach mini fridge freezer combo for my classroom in 2014. In 2019, it quit cooling. It sat in my classroom closet for almost a year while I thought it was broken. I called 3 appliance stores in my city with no luck. One lady said it would be cheaper for me to just buy a new mini fridge compared to the cost they would charge me to repair it. Before giving up and taking it to the dumpster, I googled and found this video. After I got the guts to remove the starter relay, mine was in fact rattling, just like yours. I ordered the part you linked on Amazon, waited two days for it to arrive, again got the guts to replace the part all by myself and now I have a freezing cold mini fridge to start the school year. A good teacher has done their job when their students can demonstrate mastery of the material. You sir, are a good teacher! Thank you! Namaste, Mrs. Buckley
Jessica Buckley awesome!! Never be afraid to attempt to fix something that is already destined for the dumpster. I’m glad you stepped out of your comfort zone and got up the nerve to tackle the project. The next time you need to repair something it won’t seem as scary. Best wishes to you in the classroom this year.
This actually worked. First video was complex, with tools I don't own. Brought it down the stairs to the garbage room. Didn't want to give up and found this video. Went back downstairs and grabbed fridge. Took out relay , shook it, heard it,ordered it, installed it, worked it. Awesome use of the internet for once!!!! Thank you!!
just salvaged a mini fridge my sibling threw out, took it apart and the overload part is rattling. :) Ill update in a few days, might have just got a $180 fridge for $10! Update: It’s working! So hype
3:40 Big respect for demonstrating good safety, both in checking for ground faults, and SHOWING THE PLUG. It's good practice to keep that plug hanging near you so you can confirm whenever you want that it's definitely unplugged.
Like a big girl, I fixed my mini fridge for the $7 cost of the part in your link! I appreciate you making this video so much! I can't believe I almost threw it away! So glad I tried to fix it!
Often the presenter knows the subject but not video stuff. You have good lighting (important when peeking into the back of a small, dark unit), good sound, (no radio playing or dogs barking), good camera angles ... very nice. Thanks.
Stumbled upon this video when I was shopping for a replacement mini fridge! Now I've got the original one up and running again for $5! Thank you so much!
This is absolutely the best video I've come across for my fridge that I bought for my food truck and it saved me hundreds of dollars, seeing a video with a small fuse unlike the other condensers🙏🏾👼
UA-cam academy has helped me again! I have the same exact fridge and it just stopped being cold. I defrosted it, raised the temp and nothing. This helped tremendously! Thank you 🙏🏿
You just saved me from taking this to a repair shop! I assumed the compressor went bad, had no idea these parts were in there and sure enough, the relay was bad! Thanks for posting this vid!
Thank for including some of the multimeter troubleshooting near the beginning. Because of that I found that the thermostat had latched open despite being set to nearly the coldest setting. While playing with it a few times it made a click sound and now works. Saved me from replacing a perfectly good part.
This was my problem too on a unit that went bad during pandemic lockout. They threw it out since it was disgusting inside and wouldn't turn on. After jiggling the thermostat knob nice and hard it freed up and kicked on. It then locked up again shortly after so we will be replacing the thermostat. Great video!! Update: couldn't find the original wpf 21 but used a wdf20L successfully.
Excellent video! I watched your video and had my son in law help me take out the relay. Bought one from Amazon for $9, replaced the old one, and the mini fridge is running like new. Thank you so much.
Where do I find that relay? I want to start collecting them and whatever parts are you’d suggest? I see a lot of abandoned fridges on the side of the road.
You good brother, I had the same problem with the same kind of fridge ,I fix it with the same procedure. Thank you. I was thinking to throw away, now it work perfect. Thanks
Thanks for the video. It’s been about a year since my kegerator has worked. I watched this and took mine apart. The component is making the same noise. I just ordered a new one and am very hopeful. Thanks.
dustin...i just watched your video and in three minutes found the same problem with my bar frig. part is on order now. my girl friend thinks i'm a genius (baad bing baad booom , ya know what i'm saying)...but i owe it all to you. thanks
Great video, with excellent explanations and detailed troubleshooting tactics! Fixed my mini fridge and most importantly, didn't have to admit to my wife that I couldn't fix it lol. Thanks Dustin!
I have a 2013 Edgestar Kegerator and lost my first keg (two weeks old) due from the relay going bad..Carbon copy of problem here except my relay did not rattle when shaken and my positive wire is blue not black for some reason. Lost my keg but saved my kegerator. Less than 10 bucks on Amazon. Thanks for the video
I absolutely love tinkering with things. Picked up a small freezer off the side of the road....don't really need it at this time but just wanted to see if I could find out why it doesn't freeze and repair it. Appreciate your help. Explanations were great as was the camera work. Have a great day. Jesus bless.
Thank You ! Got a fridge for work a while that wouldn’t work. Called the vendor and they shipped me a new one. They were going to toss it, so I took it home. Tried replacing the starter and protector with no luck. Wasn’t until I saw your vid and you mentioned testing the continuity at the plug for the thermostat that I figured it was the problem. Opened it and one wire was unplugged. Got my self a working $175 fridge!
I just wanted to say thank you so much for posting this. I have the exact fridge and this was the exact problem and I ordered the part and my fridge is working like a champ again!
Great video! thank you Dustin! It helped me to diagnose (exactly same symptoms - started then stopped), so I pretty much knew this was an issue with the relay. Removed and shake it and same noise :-) I went one step further and open the relay and say a broken piece with a kind of disk inside, just removed it, turned it around so there was full contact, and now all fixed! $0 but I think I may still need to get a new part (relay), but in the mean time I managed to get it up and running again! Great with multimeter too at the beginning - this troubleshooting step were priceless!! Thanks Again! Note: My Bar Fridge is Midea HS-140LN (112L)
Thank you so much for this awesome video! I had a fridge I was about to throw out and buy a new one and I came across your video. I shook my starter relay and it rattled as well. Ordered a new one from Amazon and installed it. Worked!! Thank you!
Hi nice! I fixed mines glad you are telling the ladies 1. where to put the wires back if you forget to take a pic and most importantly after the install if you plug it in and you still don't hear the compressor... turn you dial (inside the fridge) to zero and then to your desired setting. Mines then kicked back on. So happy I am back in business!!👍Thx!!!
Awesome video. This helped me solve my issue right away. I am s student at the University f waterloo and my dorm mini fridge stopped working with the clicking noise on Sunday, by Tuesday i had the issue solved by buying a 5$ part on Amazon and following this video. Thank you so much!
I found a fridge that would cost around $150 for $14 at goodwill the freezer works beautifully it’s just the lower refrigerator hopefully this works !!
well i got even luckier, i pulled it off shook it. heard nothing, reconnected and boom it worked :D! Thanks for the video none the less saving lots of people money! Cheers.
great video.... I have a Danby mini fridge similar to yours. Was working fine until i moved it outside to defrost the freezer part. Once back in the house it turns on i can hear the compressor..it gets very hot and stays on but doesn't cool the fridge or freezer anymore. Thermostat is set to coldest and i checked the relay that you shake and doesn't make any noise. Compressor gets very hot and strays on and also is making a smell. Maybe freeon leaking???
Thank you!! I just found a bud lite bar fridge and it’s been clicking on and off and after I left it plugged in for an hour it got hot in the back and smelled like burning dust. I unplugged and decided I needed to learn more before I fubar this thing. Thanks for the video!
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this great video. If my compressor is hot to the touch and seems to be lightly vibrating does this mean the compressor is bad? The fan is on.
Thanks for the great easy to follow video! Fingers crossed that’s what the issue is for my mini fridge. Update: it was! So easy to fix thanks to u!! Gracias!
Hey Dustin, the freezer part is working fine, but the fridge below nada. The compressor is running, I guess, because I hear it and the freezer is fine. Advice? Where do I go from here? Thanks!
Hey Dustin...thank 4 a great and useful video. I’m love learning about stuff like this and your video helped me quickly added easily learn how to diagnose my own, brand new, not working, mini fridge/freezer. Thank you.
Very cool . My Summit outdoor mini had the door left open for X long now it now longer cools . Compressor gets hot , inside fan works thinking all is good . Lol You gave me a good place to look but I was defeated by the plastic cover over the wires lol no clip I could see didn't want to break it but I'm going in ! Ight hit up for some more trouble shooting if it's ok . Thanks :)
I just bought a new 3.3 cube mini fridge. It doesn’t turn on but I noticed according to this video mine is missing the inlet copper line that you mentioned.
Very nice! Great demo, to the point, and relatively easy fix. Thank you so much. Subscribed. I wish you had shown a closeup of the Multimeter settings. I don't know how to use it very well.
If you have a multimeter, you can test the relay and the compressor. I have another more recent mini-fridge video that shows how to test the relay. There are other videos that show how to test the compressor
Great video now makes me wonder what's wrong with mine I have one of these exact mini fridges. Mine started to do some gas leaking sounding noise inside when it's on, then sounds like a drainage happening when it turns off. I don't know if thats always been there to be honest. I still cools great though, but I do think the compressor turns on more than normally did in the past. Do you think it's going bad and going to die on me? Thanks
Called a Heater switch..It preset to a preset load rating. As it's normally closed contact..Once it cools down. The heat sensitive strip will return to the closed position...As these heat sensitive strips are set by the manufacturers...
hi, how are you doing sir, thank you for that but mine is while i was cleaning i accidentally poke a hole in the freezer and i can see it leaking after awhile it stops leaking and i patch the hole but when i turned it onit does not getting cold anymore, any advice pls thank u
Usually its the relay/overload unit that goes bad before anythihg else. Typicaly thats a cheap & easy fix. Unless its the compressor itself which usualy costs $200 to $300 to get replaced.
Any advice on what to check for with the 7.5cft fridge? Mine out of the box is not working. Got in on clearance from WM and would hate to return it because of the savings but I will if I can't fix it.
Thanks for the video. I have almost the same fridge. My issue is that it runs constantly and won't shut off. The compressor feels hot actually. Ideas? (It DOES cool the fridge)
If it’s running constantly, I’d suspect that it’s low on refrigerant and doesn’t cool down enough for the thermostat to signal to stop the cooling cycle.
@Dustin Rogers .. I have a Summit mini fridge and the compressor won't stay on. I checked the thermostat and it works fine. I removed the relay and put a new one in. It came on for about a minute and then i smelled a burnt smell and it shut off. The relay is still good and so is the thermostat. I have 2 of these so i just swap parts from the working one. I'm thinking the compressor may be bad but, don't know how to tell any ides????
I went ahead and order the part even though it might not be the reason why the mini fridge is not working. I also will be ordering a kick starter to deal with the compressor, just in case that is the problem. The kick starter is almost as much as the fridge itself, but I have to look at it this way, that the same thing could happen to another refrigerator.
The issue is not the part explain here, I think it is the compressor. I either get a kickstarter or just another mini, which will cost about $80 and some tax.
I should have continuity between the neutral and hot terminals, IF the thermostat is turned up. Well, I don't have continuity, so I suppose the thermostat is faulty. But I DO have continuity between the neutral terminal and the ground terminal, which you suggest might be caused by an internal short in the compressor. I'm sure it's possible to have both issues (faulty thermostat AND shorted compressor). But I'm wondering if you might know of one situation that could create both issues.
patriece marshall if your compressor is shorted, I’d focus on that issue first. I’d unplug the wiring to the compressor and make sure the short is in fact in the compressor and not in the wiring somewhere.
Thanks for this. Seems helpful. I will try. Can i ask that whether all starter relays are universal for all brands or does each brand have its own starter relay? Does the one you gave the link work for all brands? Thanks
You’ll need to look at the relay on your compressor. Some have one wire connection but others can have 2, 3, or 4 connections. There’s also other styles of relays that are not compatible. I have a newer video that I explain it a bit more. ua-cam.com/video/5KlTjU4cRVA/v-deo.html
I replaced the the start relay and the refrigerator is still not cooling, I can hear a buzzing/humming sound. I was told it may need a compressor. How do I replace the compressor?
Checked this out on Magic Chef Wine Cooler - Start relay appeared to be working - doesn't rattle- compressor starts, gets very warm, refrigerator doesn''t cool. It appears that overload relay kicks it out. Question I guess is if the overload relay is doing it's job and the compressor is overheating. What's the next step if this starter relay is working properly - is it likely the overload relay kicking off too early, the compressor bad, low refrigerant charge? What's next if the start relay isn't the culprit?
How long does it run before the overload trips? If it’s a matter of seconds, it may still be the relay. Check out this newer video where I show a faulty relay that doesn’t rattle. ua-cam.com/video/5KlTjU4cRVA/v-deo.html If it runs for a long time before the overload, I’d suspect low refrigerant.
Thank you for this info, my mini fridge stopped working so opened the back of mind. I looked in the back and saw the black box, and removed the relay. Ordered me another from Amazon and replaced it myself. It now works fine for those ladies you can do it, I'm 70 yrs old and I did it.

Did you also switch out the overload module? My relay isn’t rattling but the overload module does. Is it not supposed to rattle?
@@chabelita211 yea it’s not supposed to rattle

Was going to toss my 3 year old mini fridge, this worked thank you for the video, saved me some money and time.
That's exactly what mine was doing. Relay is rattling. Part ordered. Thanks!
The start/run switching relay is one of the those things I pull out of scrapped fridges for spares. Nice fix.
Where do I find that relay? I want to start collecting them and whatever parts are you’d suggest? I see a lot of abandoned fridges on the side of the road.
This fits my situation perfectly. Exact model. Rattle in the Starter Relay. Parts ordered! I'll follow up when its running.
todd quest - fits my case perfectly also. cant wait to get to work and fix this thing
I got the part quicker than expected. Easily replaced the old one and now have a working fridge. $5.99 Boom!
You good brother, I had the same problem with the same kind of fridge ,I fix it with the same procedure. Thank you. I was thinking to throw away, now it work perfect.
Thanks
Thank you for this little tutorial. I never knew that this little units were so simple...so far. Thanks.
This was super helpful. I too was able to fix my mini fridge for the cost of the $10 part! Super simple and you explained everything clearly.

I wish you had shown a closeup of the Multimeter settings. I don't know how to use it very well.
I changed the relay. And it still clicks and suggestions ? Great video thanks.
Just what I needed to know. Thanks. I fix things myself all the time. I just needed to know how. :) started following you as well
I appreciate that. Thanks
You can also test the ohms on a relay. My relay was not rattling and it read 5.6 ohms. Still will not cool.
Thank you for making this video my mini refrigerator back working new a $9 fix
hi, how are you doing sir, thank you for that but mine is while i was cleaning i accidentally poke a hole in the freezer and i can see it leaking after awhile it stops leaking and i patch the hole but when i turned it onit does not getting cold anymore, any advice pls thank u
All of the refrigerant leaked out. You’d have to hire someone to evacuate and recharge the system once the leak has been fixed.
Great video, i just picked a mini fridge out of the garbage, it doesn't work, hopefully this is the problem!
Usually its the relay/overload unit that goes bad before anythihg else. Typicaly thats a cheap & easy fix. Unless its the compressor itself which usualy costs $200 to $300 to get replaced.
@@theatom7264 it was! $10 on amazon and it's running like a champ!
Work i like a charm... $4.10 for the part, you saved me from buying a new unit...
Akili Cross great. Glad I could help. Thanks for watching.
Any advice on what to check for with the 7.5cft fridge? Mine out of the box is not working. Got in on clearance from WM and would hate to return it because of the savings but I will if I can't fix it.
@@TheHassboss12 start with what is shown in the video
@@DustinRogersinMO Thank you SO much! I'll give it a try!

Very good details I have a refrigerator that stopped cooling. Thanks 🙏
Great video! Got the link to the part u replaced? Thanks again

Excellent! I have two mini fridges doing the same thing. Thank you sir!
Thanks for this, it’s exactly what happened to mine.
I replaced the the start relay and the refrigerator is still not cooling, I can hear a buzzing/humming sound. I was told it may need a compressor. How do I replace the compressor?
Good content, and presentation thereof. Not boring; succinct; informative.
Really nice smile. Beard look is also attractive.
I love this video, the best explanation

If it runs for a long time before the overload, I’d suspect low refrigerant.
