Here’s the thing: while all of us love some juicy breakdowns - it’s the build up that gives it the oomph needed to unleash hell when it drops. For me the build up is essential. Without it these are just nasty ass breakdowns. I need time to pent up some energy and then almost snap my neck when the breakdown finally rolls out.

I can head bang to a breakdown even without the build up, but I agree that the build up is what makes the break down so good.

The hardest one was Slaughter To Prevail, because I've almost became numb to Lorna Shores To The Hellfire's breakdown, all the other one's were easy. Not my style to headbang to imo.

As I Lay Dying was the only breakdown that made me feel the slightest itch to headbang, but I resisted the urge to. I found the others boring. Slow breakdowns just don't appeal to me as much as catchier and more relentless ones do (like "Profane Believers" by Heaven Shall Burn, for example)

Slow breakdowns don't hit as hard if you don't listen to the whole song, especially without the build up before them. It's like a jumpscare in horror. It's not good without the tension or buildup.

0:10 You're 100 percent correct, Alex. The build up is so important in breakdowns, that why even though Pantera's Domination has a simple breakdown, it is considered one of the best by a lot of metalheads because the build up was done so perfectly.

I feel like those heavy deathcore breakdowns were easy to not headband because there’s really no groove to it. Baba Yaga is groovy and heavy, it makes the stank face come out and the irresistible urge to headbang. I’m with you on the songs it was tough to not headbang on, the others just had me stank facing it up.

I feel for Lorna being easier than Slaughter has to deal with the instruments rather than vocals. See Lornas is all about Vocals and Slaughters is all about that power punching breakdown that’s just, well nasty.

Suicide Silence - No Pity For A Coward got me because I saw them last year and all us homies in the pit were locked arms doing one collective group headbang. Heaviest shit ever when it's live, loud, and on a sticky wood floor.
Something to be said about old school deathcore (not just SS). I've always thought the level of "dirtyness" in sound and mix compared to the newer stuff adds a different kind of heavy that makes me feel completely different. Stuff like Job For A Cowboy, old Whitechapel, Thy Art.

From the title I thought "this is going to be insanely hard." I figure, I can do pretty well with the whole "Try not to laugh" type challenges but this would be a real challenge because, you know, music. And metal. But sucked. At the risk of sounding like every boomer ever (or Hank Hill) "It's nothing but toilet sounds." Not a fan at all of that particular brand of "music" if you can even call gutteral gibberish and random flailing on instruments "music." Had this been a compilation of, like, Dragonforce, Skillet, Linkin Park, Metallica, 12 Stones, Pillar, Thousand Foot Krutch, Fireflight, Evanessence, you know the kind of metal that has more melody to it and lyrics you can actually vibe with (or, you know, are even remotely intelligible) then this probably would have got me. Even if they did some techno breakdowns, some Daft Punk or Skrillex type stuff that would be more likely to get me to headbang (or at least get the head boppin' action going). This was just a cake walk. It was more of a "try not to get annoyed/remove your headphones" type challenge for me, really.

ILLIDIANCE Fuel For My Hate is one of the heaviest most unique breakdowns out there.

The only one that was close to headbang was As I Lay Dying, cool riff. The others were easy not to headbang, when you start with glass gargling vocals.
