I don't think you noticed Kamina reversing his common phrase "Don't believe in yourself, believe in me who who believes in you" to "Believe in you who believes in yourself" during his final moments, knowing that he won't be there to boost Simon's confidence anymore.

The way the show pulled off this death is so perfect. The audience is always bargaining and theorizing. Little do they know that Kamina has taught what he needed to teach and it's time for the hero to step forward.

When they combine you can see in the computer graph that Kamina's cockpit doesn't light up and doesn't produce any energy. The energy came all from Simon at the end because Kamina already "died"
#SUNDAYRUNDOWN Kamina's death here couldn't have been better, it really cements that Simon is the main character and Kamina's bigger than life personality. It shows how emotional this show can be in between all the hype it makes you feel. Honestly I don't know if I'd want them to change it, this is Kamina going out on top and part of the reason hes so iconic.
It's the exact moment where even us viewers believe that we'd follow Kamina anywhere no matter where he leads us, and it's there where he has to leave.

This is the episode I've been waiting on since they started. This hits so hard because Shonen are always afraid to kill main characters. When you look at it, the show focuses on Simon but Kamina gets such good highlights that you think he'll at least be a main support but naaaaa, kill him off in the prologue and see what happens. That's brave writing
This isn't a shonen, because this isn't an original work published first in a manga. Shonen is usually something only assigned to demographics in manga magazines.

Shonen literally means boy, so the audience would be male teenagers and younger.
There are tropes associated with that demographic. It is 100% what Gainax went for with this story
More like inevitable, proper writing. Simon’s the main character and he relies too heavily on Kamina’s charisma. In order for Simon to grow, you gotta get rid of that blinding light that is Kamina.
I was expecting it as part of the hero's journey, but not so soon.
Kamina actually died when Byakko stabbed him through the back. The man came back to life through sheer willpower, brought Simon back to his senses and unlocked his special move. Man was a legend. Even Gurren Lagann cried.
Yeah, when they fuse you can usually see both drivers, but in this one Kamina wasn't shown because he was already dead

Fun fact: when Kamina and Simon combine for the last time, you can see Kamina's screen shows no life signs. Bro had so much willpower he came back just to give Simon the push he needed and avenge his own death
Kamina one of the baddest badasses of all time. Dropped inspirational speeches that still go hard to this day and straight up came back from the goddamn dead to finish the fight through will power.
I mean return from the dead literally. When we see his digital representation during the last combination you can see that he’s still dead, he died and came back through will power. Even cooler is that in the later made manga version they gave him spiral eyes representing that he had an INSANE amount of spiral power(power of evolution and humanity potential/willpower).
Hands down one of the most devestating and unexpected deaths in any media.

Ah yes, the episode where this series really takes off.
Gurren Lagaan holds a very special place in my heart. About two years before I finally decided to watch it on Netflix, a cousin of mine passed away. We were very close growing up and he was basically the big brother I never had (and I’m an only child, so it really meant a lot having a brotherly bond with someone). He taught me how to be self confident and to always believe in myself. One morning when I got the news that he suddenly died, it seriously hit me hard. 😢
So I know exactly what Simon will be going through the next few episodes.
One of the fastest main character deaths in anime
Kamina is one of my favourite characters in anime. The impact he had in eight episodes is astounding.

This episode reveals that Simon was the true main character all along. Simon basically takes Kamina's well meaning but ultimately empty sloganeering and transforms it into a guiding life philosophy. Kamina lives on throughout the rest of the series as an inspiration for his friends.
Yeah this is the moment when Kamina transcended into legendary status. He went out on top and has nothing that could tarnish his reputation anymore
"reveals" to those who yet think Kamina is the main character, even after the entire show makes clearly that Simon is the main Character: He the first to appear in the opening, and in the end of the Opening looking to the Sky; He's the first character to appear in the first episode, and all episodes always follows Simon's view 90% of the episode; Kamina always stated that everything was thanks to Simon and Lagann; Leeron stated that Lagann is the font of Power of Gurren Lagann.

If you think about it, it's a great plot-point. "Believe in me who believes in you" every single time except this episode. For this last time, Kamina basically told Simon to believe in himself. No Kamina in the middle. Something to push Simon's character forward. Not that it's going to be that easy. But it's a death that's not just there for shock value but as a turning point. There is no Kamina to rely on anymore. So where do Simon go from here? Simon whose sole boost of confidence was Kamina.

I remember when this happened my first time watching I was so upset because kamina felt like the heart of the series and it just wouldn't be the same and I almost didn't even want to keep watching but I think the show actually does a really good job of intentionally exploiting that feeling. when someone that important dies, it's natural to grieve and for your motivation to waver and things really will never be the same but that doesn't mean you just stop or that you can't find something new.
No deaths in anime gets me more worked up than his. RIP Kamina.
Kamina lives on as the inspiration for the rest of Team Gurren to keep fighting. He had to go so everyone else could move forward. It's a hard lesson and one this show does not let you forget.

This episode actually hit me so bad back when I first watched that I legit could not bring myself to rewatch it for many years, and my gf at the time just dropped the anime on this episode lol
Kamina is still my favorite male anime character, and I never ever expected him to die this early.
When this first came out in the US they were doing 4 episodes per DVD, and 2 DVDs per release, so I had to wait like two months before I got to see beyond that part

This genuinely shocked me the first time I watched it. I tear up everytime. The balls they had to kill a main character. You really get attached to kamina. The dub is amazing! This is a great example of an amazing dub. Can you believe this game never really got a videogame based on it? That would slap!

The thing is Simon crushing on Yoko isn't unnatural. Simon is around 10-12 years old whereas Yoko is 14 years old. He has what we call a puppy crush. And Kamina is only slightly mature than Simon which made Simon oblivious to the fact that Yoko likes his bro. It's actually heart wrenching.
