  • Now you may remember that we followed the story of a group of firefighters from Portsmouth who retraced the route taken by the Cockelshell heroes.
Well on a wet monday morning, in a sleepy little Hampshire village, a plaque commemorating the commander of the original raid was unveiled.
So Richard Stringer made sure to be there for this historic moment.

I thought "Blondie Haslar" was a Major not Lieutenant Colonel or have I been watching too much "Cockleshell Heroes"? Also the whole thing was a "Cock Up" where Lord Ashdown says in a separate interview The French had the same idea and duplicated the attack without the knowledge of The Royal Marines !

He was a Major at the time of Operation Frankton, he left the Royal Marines in 1948 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
