Boxwoods are mad expensive over here an Illinois a good dense 24” one can easily cost 80+ for a contractor but hey landscaping is a luxury !
Haha yes Brian. Landscaping is a luxury service. I've had to tell myself this 1000 times before I actually started to believe it.
Man I appreciate both of you guys for always sharing some knowledge with us ! You guys rock, thanks again for the great videos.
Thanks Tim. How long have you been in the game?
@@keith-kalfas I'm a weekend warrior for now. Started a little over two years ago. But went to school for horticulture and golf course maintenance back in my HS days. I love working outside

Didn't book it yet because I'm still wrapping up the season here and I want to make sure all of my priorities are fulfilled before I up and leave state.
I miss those days when this video first aired!
No fluff just facts
Dropping gems You & Brian double dose of knowledge. 👍🏾👍🏾 Appreciate the video!! On the flip side....Watttup thooo!!!
Wattup thooo!! Haha. Thanks man. Much appreciated. 2021 is your time to shine.

Great for information Keith, keep up the good work!
@@keith-kalfas how much do you charge to put down the Preen ? And how much do you charge to put down weed and feed on a lawn after cutting it ?
Brian's funny I'm just an actor 😂😂
Lol. I never really understood what he was saying or what he really meant. I just laughed 🤣. But as time goes on, now I understood and it's actually brilliant.
Great video from the both of you. Very valuable content that new guys really have to take in. Big thank you to you both
Thanks Allium and you're welcome. 2021, time to shine. How long have you been in the industry?
@@keith-kalfashey Keith, name's Tim and going on our 6th year.
I like how you guys learn from each other! no competition or ego involved just growth
I made my first 5 stacks landscaping, never looked back to lawncare.
I've been in the industry for yrs but I still enjoy watching these guys together.. I still learn something
all over Keith, great man , amazing experience. he's on my mind , while I work .
Im just starting to get homes is the million dollar row and I really love dealing with big homeowners who dont mind spending 4-10 grand and doing those jobs are the only way to get into those homes!
Thanks you helped me save some time as well by not calling for yard service unless I have at least 2 grand to blow.
Remember watching this on Brian’s channel years ago. Still great content 🙌 appreciated as always Keith
Look at these two young guys!!
Good stuff as always. I love how you got out of that quote. I need to improve on this with those ones I know don't have potential. Appreciate the knowledge. I'm at the learning from struggles phase. 😂
Nice bro. Congrats Ricky. I've learned that there's only 1 other substitute than experiencing your own mistakes. Lol. And that's learning from other people's mistakes. Haha. But it sounds like you're well on your way. What state are you in?
@@keith-kalfas It's funny bc I had about 3 of those mistakes in the last year. Each time I spend my day fixing the issue, telling myself "you did this to yourself, customer wins". Haha
I am in Bentonville Arkansas. Home of Walmart Headquarters here. Left my sales job right before Covid and went all in with this and stump removal. Loving the journey so far. Thanks for the response brother.
Very nice. Congrats man. Yo did it. Feel amazing doesn't it?
Brotherrrr Keith
PRO TIP : tighten up the mulch against the house 🤙 level the mulch line against the house
Makes a big difference in aesthetic
Bro ima come up to Michigan and show you how us Fl boys do dawgggg🤣🤙❤️
Keith like... I got no time for a intro or outtro dawg IM Keith kalfas
Hahahaha. Yeaaa dawg
Great work Keith
Thanks man.
when would you start passing out fliers?
if you start now is it a waste of time?
is direct mail good or better than door hangers ?
That's a great question. I really think you should start advertising to a defined and specific audience or neighborhoods about 3 weeks before the springs starts popping. (Birds chirping, sun shining.) But if you're on a tighter budget, then wait until the "spring is in the air". So you "enter a conversation that's already happening in your customers minds". (Perfect timing)
Let’s just hope Biden doesn’t close down the country for 100 days once he gets in. That will hit are spring work again.
Why do we always have to crush it? Why can't we fold it up neatly ?
Hahaha... I think you're onto something. 😆
@@keith-kalfas Yea man " I hope you guys get out there a fold it up and put it away neatly in 2021" Waaaaaay better
Haha
17:10 what kind of tree is that over Keith’s right shoulder? @KeithKalfas
I think its an Autumn Blaze Maple that's been improperly pruned so many times that now it looks like a furry sculpture... lol that needs to be trimmed again. 🤔
You both rock. We operate the same way after YEARS of pain & frustration lol
This video is super valuable!! Thanks for all the information guys! 😀👍
One of my favorite videos you both made. Thank you n Brian for the dedication
Thanks Sean.
Dropping knowledge, thanks big dawg!
Thanks Eric. Are you in lawncare or landscaping?
awesome ! needed help charging for a mulch job .
You're welcome
Excellent content brother! I have to create maintenance packages for this year. Mulch and planting is my cake but grass seeding is very profitable. My profit margins are 75% and higher cause I don't have employees to pay. When I utilize help, it lowers to around 50%. Always find ways to increase revenue and generate leads at a job! Keep up the great work bud! 🤙
Thanks for all your videos and knowledge sharing dude! Iv now started a lawn care business because of your inspiration. Hoping to quit the day job and go full time this summer! You're the man!!!
Congrats James. This is great! When the time comes. You'll know it.

Never really understood Keith's like to dislike ratio, always has quite a couple dislikes for such good content, probably all the truth bombs with no filter xD!
Filters are overrated!
I dunno. Haha. But I'm sure appreciating all of the thumbs ups. 👍.
Great video keith u nd bryan the best lanscaping combo great info, u guys talk great informative points on your videos 🔥🔥
Thanks Ricky. Appreciate it dude.
Enjoyed the video even as a roofing contractor. Very knowledgeable, looking into getting in the business eventually.
I wish y’all were in Alabama so I could pay someone to do this stuff at my house. We have zero landscaping guys. Lots of mowers, no actual landscaping boyz.
Keith bringing back the classic vids. Never enough time to learn. Always learn something new. Keep up the great work. 100k subs woop!
Thanks broski.
Keep crushing it bro. Stumbled onto your channel and u have opened my eyes to so many opportunities to make money. Keep up the hustle
Love the video best one yet.
Nice T-shirt Brian. I have the same T-shirt. lol
Yo Keith I've been watching your videos for a while I had a question if you were to start out from today which side of the business would you invest in landscaping, tree work, cutting lawns, window cleaning etc. When your first start out and you want your profit margins exceptional?
That's a great question but the answer isn't simple because, even though 1.)Tree Trimming is the highest profit margin thing we do. I don't get enough tree trimming work to pack an entire schedule. 2.) Landscape installs in the sweet spot of $7,500 are very profitable, but not without first becoming experienced. 3.) Garden bed maintenance and mulch has always been the "bread and butter". But you need to develop a system to make it profitable, because it's very easy to mis judge the scope of work and end up working your tail off for no money. Lol. 4.) Lawn care also takes a long time to build a solid clientele. Lawn care , to me is "All-In or Get Out". Brian makes great money in lawns because his approach is systematic. 5.) Window cleaning is tricky because it's a "mindset" business. You can work yourself to death and bang your head against the wall. Until you learn that it's a "luxury service". I should make a video on this. But in conclusion. It might be smart to just jump in and go grab ALL of the low hanging fruit you can.. And clean up the mess in year 2 or 3. Lol 👌
@@keith-kalfasLandscaping will be my main focus starting out

Wow! Brian looks so much older now. Informative video.
Great video, thanks !!!!!!!!!
It all depends and is according to the neighborhoods tax brackets exctra.those are not normal yards thats manicured.or fake yard s as I call them cause they are.they pay more but can come with headaches.healthy balance of both fake and real yards are good ..not every area looks like this lol.just calrifyeing, there's many variants.
good info guys....
Omg amazing videos I’m 18, just started as well . This is amazing tips 🙌🏾💯

Haha. I just got off the phone with Eric. He's crushing it. But from what I gather. UA-cam was a phase. I'm really glad that Eric opened up and shared his experience on UA-cam with us. There's some solid golden nuggets in his videos.
But Eric has multiple businesses and a family. Haha but ill guarantee to you. Next time I see Eric. I'm gonna steal his phone and make a video with him and upload it to his channel. Hahah.
Love these videos. Really helps
Mulch on the boulder in the front of the house ….. cmon dawgggggh right around the 13th mark
Hey Keith,
Great content as usual. What would a yard of mulch cost you in Michigan, for comparison. It is $60 here in Ontario
It's 106 in sun toady its why I'm not working at noment'.roof no way..trees sure you can rest on rope in shade
Great video guys!!
Do you charge more per yard for rock ?
Yep. And it depends on the rock too. There's an entire spreadsheet on where to start and progress when it comes to installing rocks. But you can start out by charging 2.5 - 3 X your materials cost.
Make sure your calculating 1.) Prepwork 2.) Delivery 3.) Footsteps 4.) Do you need a machine? 5.) Cleanup time. P.S. if you're just getting started you can use a formula called T&M (Time & Materials). Which means that you charge the client retail price for materials and then tack on your standard man hr. rate on top of that.
man this information is key
Thanks man. How long have you been in business?
@@keith-kalfas this will be my 3rd year in the industry i started watching some of you earlier videos which help me get through my slow seasons and that mental mindset that we all grow through
Thanks bro
Don’t be afraid to charge for estimates!
wait a minute.... I’ve seen this video before hahaha! this vid was from 2018. Would you price it the same for this upcoming 2021 year or do you think with inflation it may be higher?
Haha yes. Abel. Yes. So. Now. The prices have gone up on mulch from $100 per yard. To $120. And the price of debri removal has gone up by 20%. But the major difference is. That now we have a $500 minimum for any job.
Any advice on what books to read to learn all the bushes and trees ??
How much do you gross Keith? Close to a million? What’s your long term goal?
Here to say this is an old video. Already seen this in 2020??
Thanks Lehel.
Is commercial pesticides license not required in Michigan?
Hey guys, hope you like this video. There's a ton of tips in here regarding properly qualifying, quoting, and measuring mid-sized garden bed maintenance projects. As well as some painful and costly mistakes to avoid.
Check out my dude Brian's Lawn Maintenance ua-cam.com/users/BriansLawnMaintenance
When you say two Times cost does that mean plant price , install , celebra etc. Or two times mark up plus install ?
Sorry kept watching the video haha you answered my question. I usually price it with 25 percent up charge , delivery fee, and estimated man hours. But I kinda like the way you do better I’m going to try it on a big planting job I gotta quote out this week.
I need a job done.. where are you in Michigan
How much do you want to make on an hour you charge ? love the channel, Thanks
can you tell me roughly how much you are charging an hour and what's profit %, overhead%, Labour%, material% that's estimated. Thanks
🔥🔥🔥🔥
🔥🔥🔥
Good videos
Is it necessary to use weed fabric underneath the mulch or do you normally use it thank you
Great videos!
I just finished a yard where a neighbor climb the fence over and started to yell at me because of my string trimmer picking up dust. He recommended me to wet the area first yet I refuse to listen to non-sense.Have you had an encounter where a neighbor complained?
Hey bro! Can I come ride around with ya? I'll buy after-hours.
🥩🍻 😂
I'll give you a call this spring/summer.
LITERALLY. YOU'RE USING THE WORD WRONG. Thanks for the videos.
Preen doesn't really work lol
Asking this early so I don't forget but you might clarify later in the video. 3 guys and $150 an hour, so does that break down to $50 / man hour or do you actually charge $150 / man hour for these jobs?
The new goal is $74 per man hour. "Billable hours"
What's the name of those head set ?
I use the LG hbs 820s.
you charge double retail to plant each shrub?
Triple. Or at least 2.5
Great video, but what drugs are you guys on?
And thise kinda property s 90 percent dont have a real tree ..something to consider if your not just a scaper. Where as regular propetyd has several huge trees $$$.that need removal.and none of all this marketing jibbersh, just saying
Bro you think too much 🤣
I don't want to rain on your parade. Dude? Preen?? As a Master Gardener, that shit is highly toxic to animals, pets, beneficial pollinaters and birds. Sadly, if you're using it near runoff areas that s*** goes into the water systems and kills major aquatic life. It then goes into our waste water treatment. I encourage you to research it, and possible viable alternatives, I can't encourage you to take a master gardener class, or consult with a few, we may have varying opinions on Preen, (believe me I used to use it) but, resorting to harsh destructive pesticides and herbacides, is not cool. Cancer is, huge next accidents the major contributor to death on our industry.
Powerful comment. Thank you for the sage advice.
Brother, I had a huge wakeup call when I had been using the preen for several months in several gardens that I was managing and I noticed that within a few months many of the pet owners especially the cats and a couple of small dogs died within months of each other..I researched it, and said to myself it wasn't coincidental.. sad and bad karma for me.
Scrubber ducky Brian

Omg I hand pull weeds at my job for 14.50 an is not worth it lol at all I hate it. Ik my worth. Quick story 🤣 me an my partner were at a yard on the clock. Neighbor came out an walked us around her yard she asked if we could come every week and cut her yard. I told her 175 she simply said 👍🆗. I was shocked. But at the time we didn't even have a mower lol. But it was practice 😂. I'm not scared to throw that high number out first. Then we can come with an aggreement vs
