War and Peace is considered Tolstoy's finest literary achievement, along with Anna Karenina, and remains one of the internationally acclaimed classics of world literature.
The book tells the story of France's invasion of Russia during the Napoleonic period and its aftermath. It uses five intertwined narratives following different Russian aristocratic families to show the Napoleonic influence in Tsarist society.
Tolstoy said that the best Russian literature did not meet the standards and therefore hesitated to classify War and Peace, saying that it was "not a novel, even less a poem, and even less a historical chronicle." Large chapters, especially the later chapters, are philosophical discussions rather than narrative. He considered Anna Karenina his first real novel.
