He gained fame as a matinee idol in the 1950s, starring in films like Ulilang Anghel (1958), Baby Face (1959), and Beatnik (1960). He became one of Sampaguita Pictures' leading men, often paired with actresses like Susan Roces and Amalia Fuentes.
Beyond acting, Gonzales became the first president of the Philippine Association of the Record Industry (PARI) in 1971 and served as a congressman for San Juan City from 1998 to 2001. He was also instrumental in broadcasting, serving as the head of RPN-9 during the 1990s.
