The lyric”None of this fake,it’s all reality!” Sounds like the end is trying to brainwash you into thinking that where you are isn’t fake and to trap you into staying there forever as the lyrics and beat gets louder and louder like it’s really clouding your brain to an unhealthy degree

Given that it plays in 3-7, before Rhea Island, it makes a lot of sense. The end is subtly lulling Sonic into accepting his fate as he struggles to free his friends.

I really like 4-4 personally, i think it catches perfectly that backrooms vibe that the city theme reprensents. It's soothing and calm but there's this uneasiness that makes you wanna leave this place, because if you were to stay, you might just get lost in these memories... forever.
It might not be the catchyest cyberspace song, but it actually gave me chills when i first went through the level, and i feel like it's the one that fits the cyberspace theme the best.

I may have mentioned this on a different video, but I’ve got a special love affair with 1-6 Go Back 2 Your Roots. The chord progression is so catchy, and the use of the chiptuney synth leads to go with the classic Green Hill level caught my ear the very first time I heard it. There’s also a slap bass section, which makes everything better (and feels very iconic to Sonic). But the buildup is my favorite part-I love the way it changes it up, weaving back and forth between different instrumental combinations, and adds something new every time the progression loops until at the end the drop hits and you’re just flying.
On my first playthrough, 1-6 was probably one of the toughest levels to S-rank (I’d give it third place for how long it took me to nail, behind 1-2 and 3-6), but having that track going the whole time made it feel so much better. I gotta agree with the other commenter who said that making the song just keep going instead of restarting when you die or reset was a genius decision on Sonic Team’s part. It made trying for the S-ranks a much less painful experience.

Great vid! I would love to see your thoughts on some of the "overworld" island music, though a "Top 10" list might not be fit for it since there's a lot of repeating motifs/sections throughout the movements. I think the island themes do a great job at capturing the atmosphere of the Starfall Islands as well as setting a good tone for the story.

Great video, not only for your eloquent descriptions of the mood these tracks create - something very important in VGM - but also the amount of time you spend just... playing the songs in question. I am often surprised by how many music related videos will only play 5-10 seconds of a tune before delving back into the discussion, which is just incredibly frustrating. Kudos!

Was expecting a music list about Cyberspace from you sooner or later. Glad to see it!
    My list would probably go:
    >10: 4-4 Wishes in the Wind / A very hazy kind of track, it really does sound like the Wind is blowing through this stage. Love the atmosphere it gives off and it weirdly reminds me of some of those classic Wii and WiiU menu themes. Pretty nostalgic.
    >9: 4-9 Signs / Gives a pretty good Hardcore Trance energy. Fitting for a final level. Probably has the longest build up of all the tracks, but it really pays off. Track explains itself really. (Also fits with the constant downhill slope level design in a way)
    >8: 4-2 Ephemeral / The last third of the track where it lowers its key makes it for me definitely. Such a unique piece. Not much to say otherwise really. I can see why it's a fan favourite.
    >7: 3-3 Memory will tell / Another great Trance track, slightly edging out 4-9. I adore the middle part with the piano so much. That section really gives the entire song its flavor I think. I'm really glad they chose the sunset setting for this as the aesthetic really blends in perfectly with the atmosphere of the music.
    >6: 4-6 Fog Funk / Before I even heard it, I already witnessed constant praise about it, being the Naganuma song of the game. When I finally heard it I was very surprised actually. While I think there's some resemblance, I think the track aims for a way darker atmosphere than your average Funky Uncle theme. But it still bangs. Especially love the later parts where it finds new ways to innovate itself while staying true to its main funky progression.
    >5: 2-7 Floating in the Blue / By far the most relaxing theme in all of Cyberspace. It's almost weird in a way, but sticking out so much works to its benefit for sure. As if you found a location in Cyberspace that reminds you of only the good memories. Like 4-4 it also sounds very nostalgic to me. But while that one was more gritty, this one is cheerful.
    >4: 4-3 Rumble Rave / Damn this track is crazy! Easily the track that sounds most like a Special Stage theme, and definitely would've been pulled for a CD level aesthetic if they decided to include one for Cyberspace. Honestly, this is just one of those 'gives no fucks' dance themes you just love going full maniac mode for. I don't even know what genre this properly falls under. Of course the last third is its main highlight where the heavy electric piano drops.
    >3: 3-2 Go Slap / Man this song is just cheating. Sonic is having a little too much fun in these levels I feel like at that point. Very upbeat and fast paced with slight hints of Future Bass I feel like. Don't think there's been a track that cheered me up this much since Frozen Factory Zone 1. I don't even like the level its in, but it made me waste time on purpose to enjoy it longer. A bummer it's one of the shortest themes. ((Also sits now awkwardly in-between the streak of tracks composed by Rintaro Soma.. Damn you.. How dare you slap so hard, Go Slap..))
    >2: 3-4 Constructure / Personally think this is the most menacing track there is. Despite having very rhythmic drums, it gives off this extremely uneasy feeling of being hunted. As if Sonic's on the edge of escaping the final stages of cyber corruption. (It does fit being in the third world honestly) The rails also weirdly fit as you're never on save solid ground, with death looming under you every second. The instruments are also very dirty, kinda like 4-6, only adding to its unstable corruptive nature. And as tradition at this point, the last third of this track where it literally shifts gears and goes into a much faster paced groove ABSOLUTELY KILLS IT! I love this part so much. This is what I expected something like Cyberspace would sound like honestly. Rintaro Soma just got these tracks right I'm telling ya.
    >1: 1-4 Genshi / This was my favourite from the very beginning and it really hasn't changed since. A very classic Drum 'n Bass rhythm, filled with jungle echo noises that feel like they swirl in and out of reality while you run past them. This stage being entirely in 3D is a perfect fit as it feels and sounds like a never ending hallway that has endlessly opened widely to each side. I could listen to this track for hours and wouldn't get bored. But that's kind of the nature with atmospheric Drum 'n Bass tracks. One of my new all time favourites in the series. And again praising the legend here, but Rintaro Soma absolutely nailed these themes with its theming the most in my opinion. Almost all his tracks are in my list. I'm really looking forward to what he has in store for future games!
Well, there ya go. if anyone cares. (Also I'm not perfect at explaining music so there could be small mistakes, but I still wanted to be fancy with them)

There was a period in my life where my music tastes were almost exclusively either hard rock or 15 minute long basically-whale-sound progressive house, so this game was like a flashback nostalgia trip for me in terms of my listening habits.
Also, I must say, a lot of that gameplay footage was synced so well with the music. Props to you and the artists!

To me the EDM genre doesn't really fit Sonic normally, but in Cyberspace it fits like a glove.
On another note, the way you described bits of these songs has inspired me to take on a new project. First I'm gonna make a thing I just thought of called "word-dump poetry" where I listen to the song once and just dump all the words into my head onto the page, with another listen I'll refine the poem and the third will solidify it all. I'm gonna do this for all the songs.
The second part of the project is where I make short stories inspired by the word-dump poems from above, factoring in elements of Frontier's story and make an entire parallel story chronicling Sonic's thoughts as he goes through Cyberspace, with each stage being it's own chapter.
It's gonna be huge and I've got no idea if I'll be able to do it all, but I'm gonna save this video somewhere and try to complete as much as I can whilst editing/updating this comment in the process.

Personally, 4-9 is my favorite track.
It feels like it’s telling you this level is the end with the music. It feels like the song builds and builds and builds but instead of a giant climax, it turns into a echo of sadness almost calling out for you. Then that builds back into pure EDM.

Wow, once again, I am so glad I found this channel.
I've been wanting to revisit my favorite cyber space songs for a while now, but the way they all kind of blur together has made it difficult. This video helped exponentially and has given me a new appreciation for some of the tracks, too.
The way they were described is amazing. Breaking down the most interesting parts and then connecting them to the game lore itself was fantasticly done. I adore how it was mentioned several times that cyber space is a dream-like experience full of hope, melancholy, nostalgia, and unease. It gets my little writer's brain going it's so inspiring. Couple the great descriptors together with the narration style and * *chef's kiss* *
Such a well-made video, thank you!

Definitely had a similar experience with 1-4 Genshi. I didn't find it all that remarkable the first couple of times I listened to it, but it really grew on me. It gets really chaotic in the middle part, without a clear melody, but it somehow works really well.
2-6 Transparent Highway is my favourite Cyber Space track. I love how it manages to sound melancholic yet hopeful, as well as how it builds up to its loud, powerful melody.
I'm looking forward to seeing if the 3 new composers for Cyber Space work on a sonic soundtrack again, and what sort of stuff they will potentially compose in the future, because in my opinion they all knocked it out of the park in Frontiers.
