The grizzly attack ... you left out that they had their pet dog with them. In the tent with them. Canada doesn't want to talk about this wrong-headed policy. Domestic pets do not belong in the wilderness. They hung their food, but kept the dog in the tent. Brilliant.
Bear spray can be very effective under the right conditions. The bear needs to be far enough away (30 feet) so that you can lay down a spray barrier between you and bear. That doesn't work if the wind is blowing from the direction of bear, that is, from bear to you, because the spray will quickly dissipate and it will blow away from bear to you. Because the bear attacked the tent after dark, as they were reading, the conditions to deploy spray weren't ideal. Bear would have been close, and the wind direction may not have been appropriate. Plus, this was a bear in poor condition, so pretty motivated to find calories.
Unfortunately Baniff and probably most National Parks take away your ability to protect yourself. Bear spray is a good deterrent but there is a reason the rescue party had firearms.
Again, bear spray has been PROVEN 92% effective at stopping an aggressive bear attack. This is MORE EFFECTIVE than any other defense, including firearms. There have been multiple studies on this. It is effective in wind (due to the velocity of the spray exiting the can), and in cold weather down to temperatures likely to occur while bears are out of the den.
Jason great idea for the parks to give out passes to cars and all that come and go from the campgrounds. Instead of paying money as they come in every time. Sad about the two people killed by a bear. Very sad situation. Sad about the missing hiker. But glad they found some fossils. Thank you Jason for all this news and information. Say hi to Abby for me.
At 65 I I got my Senior Lifetime pass and sometimes when I’ve been going in a park I’ve been asked for my ID or gently remind me to need to have my ID ready but I’m not always asked for it.
My wife has the diabillity pass and overall it's a blessing to have. We only ran into issues when our toad was in the shop and we used a rental driven by my wife. At the Grand Canyon they understood that sometimes you drive an RV and car separately and counted it as one. At Willow Beach in Arizona the lady at the booth gave me a stink and chewed my wife out. She still let us in, but pretty much accused us of fraud among other things. I stayed calm and friendly and so did my wife, but you can imagine what I really wanted to tell her. Something we encounter here in Florida is that State Parks are a little inconsistent when it comes to using that as proof of disabillity. Some employees are knowledgeable and except the pass others still require you to show them your letter from Social Security. The same letter you need to get the pass in the first place.
Something is wrong here , I got a senior pass this year and went to Yellowstone and others around Yellowstone, grand Teton, little big horn, etc . When you show your pass you must show photo ID to. So if your wife showed the pass & her photo ID they know it’s her? Or am I missing something.

Wow, tough luck with that bear attack. We encountered a bear up close in Big Bend N.P. a couple of years ago. Luckily it was not aggressive. Some stones thrown in his general direction, NOT AT HIM, enticed him to vacate the trail. Actually, in Big Bend N.P., I am more afraid of the mountain lions than of the bears. If the mountain lions want you, they will get you. You will only learn of their proximity when their fangs are sunk into your throat. I hope that trail runner gets back home safely. It would be sad, indeed, to perish in the beautiful natural surroundings of a National Park.
Or any capable “bear round”. Unfortunately the Canadian government doesn’t agree with you and many people here in the US don’t either. A firearm is a must.
I love how in this instance, our federal government considers a 16 year old an adult for the pass. The feds are such a joke. Thanks for the video, Jason.
Couple items of note on the Bear attack: They had a dog w/ them. In nearly all Florida alligator attacks, there is a dog involved. It was likely the same w/ the bear attack. The bear wants the critter and they are willing to go through you to get it. Next, one of the victims was a minor, not an adult. And finally, you need more than bear spray in the wild. Our forefathers that discovered these lands proved that centuries ago. They went in armed. In spite of common myths, Canada will allow you to carry a firearm. You just have to have the right permit and it can't be military grade ammo.
Giving out vehicle passes would be impossible. The NPS can't even keep the basic annual cards in stock for sale, so you have to pay for daily entry until they distribute more cards. More profit for them! But they claim they just can't manage inventory. Add vehicle passes? They'll just use the same "we're out of them" excuse, and refuse to credit you, or waive charges.

As for the Grizzly attack, the only true protection is a large caliber firearm. Canada hates this and prefers bear spray, otherwise known as grizzly victim seasoning.
Study after study has proven bear spray to be effective 92% of the time at stopping an aggressive bear attack. This is more effective than firearms or any other defense. This isn't open to question. It has been proven. It has also been demonstrated that many people have been killed or seriously injured by bears AFTER they shot the bear. Many (especially hunters) prefer to carry firearms because of ignorance, plain and simple, and because, frankly, carrying a gun makes people feel invincible. But facts are facts. Look it up. Talk with bear experts. I live in grizzly country. I have been hiking, camping and backpacking safely in grizzly country for over 50 years.
@@RVMiles...ya but what if your pepper spray in ineffective? It's better to have a firearm and not need it, that need a firearm and not have it. BTW, reports indicate the two deceased hikers had a dog with them. Dogs are notorious for attracting grizzly/brown bears to campsites.

I think bear spray gives a false sense of safety, and hopefully the wind is blowing towards the bear, and not towards the person. Anybody who advocates the use of bear spray over the protection of the firearm is very much misleading the public.
It's just not true. The guns killed the bear because it was essentially a hunting party with rifles. A hand gun - even a high caliber - isn't anywhere near as effective in a bear attack as bear spray.
