I have never heard anything quite like the bass aria in this cantata. You can hear Jesus carrying the cross, unbelievably heavy and contemplative. Words like sad or wistful don't begin to do this masterpiece justice. Totally transportive, the distance between the music and the meaning is non-existent. How this music and this man exists is beyond me.
The first moments of this cantata are already very impressive with the repetitive upward movements of the basso continuo exemplifying the march towards Jerusalem.
