I still can't quite understand how so much vocal power and pitch perfect precision was contained in a human being. Self taught on the piano too! A ridiculous and unrivalled talent. Loved her so much ❤️
You're being very modest. Here talent is in her DNA. She inherited the singing and piano playing from her mother Barbara Siggers Franklin. Her independence and staying power may have been inherited from her father. Her talent is in her family DNA. All of her siblings had blessings and talents that may have been overshadowed by hers but still the same the entire family was gifted and talented. I've done my research. They all may have had their ups and downs but still the same whether it was good or bad they were a blessed family. God Bless . Thanks for sharing. Take care
Her Daddy was a Baptist minister so she grew up in the church plus she was in Rev James Cleveland’s choir. Look up some of that, Spirit will get ta speakin to ya!
You are so right, James. Born 70 years ago, I grew up in a time of some remarkable music, and, fortunately, Aretha's music was part of the soundtrack of my adolescent years. Such a beautiful and powerful voice that could only come directly from the soul. She was a phenomenon. Most of all, I love to watch her sing and play piano at the same time. It fills me with a joy that no words can describe.
We already have, Whitney Houston was a PHENOMENAL MASTERCLASS IN VOCALISM & look at the 7° of separation w/Whitney's own Mother, Teacher, Vocal Instructor & most strongest influence Cissy Houston, Creator & Head Chick in charge of none other than The Sweet Inspirations, Aretha's favorite background vocal group that she used MOST on her very own recordings, bcuz in her own right, Cissy's musical intelligence was an outstandin Ph.D level & Whitney shared the same family tree & learned all the skill Cissy could endow her w/while she was still you. So w/such pedigree & being in the company of phenoms like her mom, that she started working w/her Mom & "The Sweet Inspirations" on the regular in the studio at age 11 or 12 & until sumthn else sent Aretha & Cissy into the stratosphere & that was, "Ain't No Away"!!! Now imagined being genetically gifted w/the likes of Cissy & her singing siblings, Dionne & Dee-Dee Warwic & the World Renound, chior of the New Hope Baptist Church.
@@storiking650 Whitney is not a virtuoso. In this set alone Aretha outclassed Whitneys entire skill set. WH's voice was tremendous, but she did not have the skill to do genre music like this. she didn't have the creativity, the nuance or timing, the feeling for back beat, or swing. in a word she didn't have the musicianship. her instrument sounds amazing, the best, but plenty of singers are eclipsing her in terms of talent. When you’re a different generation and you know that name, Aretha Franklin, but not much more than that she was legendary. And then you watch this and you’re “Yup. I get why... This is f’ing amazing!”
Good of you to actually look into it yourself. I took 4 more years after this to be brought into this life, and also had to go back to revisit her music after i opened my mind and expanded my appreciation of all styles of great music. Growing up i knew only a few from her, mostly known for RESPECT, (A COVER), Blues Brothers showed us "Think", and a few others were big hits but to appreciate an artist i wanted to go into the tracks that were not known, where you always can find a gem that never got attention it deserves...
@@s4lroachclip Absolutely she did. But they did not quite know what to do with her...she took off like a rocket AFTER she left that label. She was by no means a flop at Columbia, and truth be told, I love this version of Aretha at Colombia. The music is just as true, just presented differently.

Wow! I got here because I was a huge Steve Allen fan in the late 60's in my mid teens, and here's Aretha. As a musician myself, I can only say that her performances were pure perfection. I love in Steely Dan's song, "Hey 19," the singer is trying to explain to a 19 year old girl who Aretha is, and she doesn't understand, because she's 19, and "We can't talk at all."
The scene in Genius was right. Aretha sung it technically great, but she was doing Dinah and Nancy Wilson, and not the QUEEN OF SOUL.When she got on the piano, that was ARETHA FRANKLIN
Barbra Streisand was singing this same song around the same time. Didn't realize that Aretha was just one month older than Barbra. Totally different interpretation, just as wonderful. Aretha's only 22 here. Just saw the movie, so now can understand this Columbia Records phase of her career.
