I do my best. I'm definitely not in anyway qualified as a rigger, but I did a lot of research and wanted to get some (what I thought was) good information out there 🙂
Oh I'm so excited to start!!! This makes it even more worth it to me to learn this year 💗 also, thank you for going over something so basic yet extremely important! The silk integrity is really important for any weight bearing, even in baby slings. I honestly can't wait to wear out my first one to turn it into something to wear already 😅
Definitely! We're trusting the silk to hold us up and keep us safe, so it definitely needs to be maintained well and retired when it's showing signs of wear 🙂
I know this video was from 2 years ago but i am planning on surprising my granddaughter who has been living with me for over 8 years she is a contortionist and does aerial silks in a class but i want her to be able to practice at home does the place your hanging your silks from need to be 8ft tall or higher and does it matter if the silks touch the floor because we have room for the silks its just i don't want to ruin the silks if its not meant to touch the floor she still doesn't know that i bought it for her i also worked in construction and stuff so i know how to safely attach it to the roof
8 feet is quite low for silks, there would still be some things that she could practice, but unlikely to be able to do drops. For reference, where I train, the ceiling is 13.5 feet. At that height there are still some moves that cant be done, but in general and for beginners that would be a good minimum height. It doesn't matter if the silks touch the floor, for some moves you need more tail, so if the silks aren't long enough you wont be able to do the move.
I use a pulley system. It makes it really easy to lift and lower the silks, I can bring them down between sessions and its easy if you want to change apparatus. I can make a detailed video about it if you're interested 😊
Thank you! I wanna start doing aerial silks in general and since everything us closed I want to start at home...Is there a specific kind for the celing? Like, are there ceilings that can't hold silks?
Most definitely! The ceiling needs to be load bearing, otherwise you'll have a high chance of the rigging failing and you could end up with a serious injury. I would recommend using an indoor rig or having a professional come and assess your ceiling for an appropriate rigging point 😊
Yes! I've been planning a video on my rig and pulley system, it's just had quite a few delays. I wouldn't recommend rigging from a tree unless you have had someone come out to assess the tree and make sure it is suitable for what you will be doing on your setup.
@@AerialBon Thanks for your reply 🙂 it's ok, I've gone with 16inches apart. Your most likely not gonna see this but I rented a house and can’t drill holes on any of the ceilings do you know what i should do cuz I really like Aerial silks thank you
Easiest thing to do would be to get a rig. They come in a lot of different heights and sizes and a lot of them are adjustable. For example, my rig can be set up from 1.6m to 7.6m (5-25 feet) high. Obviously with smaller, indoor rigs, you wont be able to do some of the bigger drops, but it can still be really useful for conditioning, poses, spins and learning the wraps. Hope this helps :)
I just got my first at home set up and I was worried I didn't right equipment. This helped so much as I had forgotten the second locking clip. Is there is good tips to braid the silks? Mine seem to be so messy and loose after I braid it. I love the videos and my instructor think its a good resource outside of practice.
@@AerialBon actually I got the same color as yours! I just found your channel this morning and am subscribed! I have an aerial/yoga trapeze so I'm not completely a beginner to hobbies like this.

You need to learn the basics and all about the safety aspects of silks before you practice at home. In a class your instructor will be able to spot you and make sure you are doing everything correctly. oh no :( How did that happen? It's up to you, I know some people who stitch the hole closed and it seems to work for them (especially considering your silks are new) but in general all the recommendations I have found suggest replacing damaged silks.
I don't want an Ariel silk for actual Ariel silk things. I want it for a hammock thing. I was wondering, how do you mount on a single point, is it safe, and what materials? Thanks!
thanks a lot for the video! I am trying to find Figure 8 and unfortunately I see only smth like 128kg, which is definitely not 7 times of my weight :) Do I need to really find carabiners and figure 8 which can hold up to 7 times of my weight?
128kg for a figure 8 is REALLY low. Most I've seen are 30-50Kn which is approx. 3000kg-5000kg. I would definitely not use a figure 8 rated for only 128kg. This means that it will fail / break if you put more weight than that on it. I have never seen aerial hardware rated this low before.
Hey Brendon, I was just wondering, do you have any suggestions for mats for underneath silks?? I have recently bought a silk and am unsure what mats are good and not to pricy! Your channel has helped me a lot with deciding if I want to buy a silk or not, thank you!! 💛💛 I’m Australian as well by the way! 😊
I got my mat from Clark Rubber. It was a bit pricy, but your safety is worth it. Mine is 180x180x30cm and cost $699 at the time, plus I could pick it up (shipping on big mats is expensive). Whatever you decide to go with, make sure it's designed for falls from height. I wouldn't recommend anything smaller than 150x150x20. If the mat is too small it only takes a bit of sway for you to move out from above it. Hope this helps.
The difficulty with Amazon is it's hard to know what you're getting. If you are buying from amazon I'd recommend asking for all the certifications for the equipment.
Definitely need one that is designed for falls from height, to absorb impact. The mats usually come with a height rating, e.g. For falls from up to 3m. So it will depend on how high you'll be going up.
I just started with a google search in my local area. I got my mat from Clark Rubber in Australia, I'm not sure about where to buy in United States. You could try looking at places that stock gymnastics or rock climbing gear 😊
Hi! I've been considering trying aerial silks or aerial yoga at home, but I live in an apartment. Would an apartment ceiling be strong enough to hold the weight?
It's hard to say. You'd need to get a professional to come out and check it and have someone install the rigging to make sure it's safe. Might seem like overkill, but if the riging fails when you're inverted and you land on your head that could be devistating. If that's not possible, you can look for a small indoor rig 😊
I just would like to know how I can rig up a hammock style thing… like using two figure 8 hooks that will be put onto one climbers ring (sorry don’t know the names of these things haha)
Ok so how long of a silk do you consider i might buy a 10m but ofc its gonna be folded that would make it 5 or a bit shorter and what can i do with the 5 m can i still do drops and stuff?
Definitely can! Where I train the ceiling height is only 4.2m. Everything on my channel I've learnt at that height. The only one you might really struggle with is the candy cane drop, that takes a lot of height.
Both are great colours, I'd say go with which one makes your heart sing more. That being said, you might want to consider what you're wearing (if you're performing or taking photos / videos) and if you want your costume to blend into the silks or stand out 🙂
I'd recommend you have someone come and assess to see if the ceiling is suitable for load bearing. A freestanding rig is often the easiest and cheapest way to safely rig at home.
Yes. It's definitely possible, but you will be very restricted in what you can do. You will be mostly limited to conditioning exercises and poses. I doubt you would be able to do any drops.
Hello first time watcher !!! :))) I would love and appreciate a list of where to get these items ((Amazon maybe ?? ;) )) thank you so much if you do see this 💚
It really depends on what you want to do. For some basic conditioning and poses you could probably get away with 2.5m (8ft). My studio ceilings are only 4.2m (13.7ft), everything on my channel I've learnt at that height, although some drops are REALLY pushing it at that height (like candy cane). My rig is about 7.8m (25.5ft), I haven't learnt anything that needs more height than that yet.
What if you just want the aerial silks just too climb on, like, pretty much no tricks. Can you get away with a lower ceiling? Also thanks for responding :)
Most ceilings are at least 8ft, once you factor in the rigging hardware, crash mat etc. that's all going to eat into your space, so I wouldn't go lower than that
@@AerialBon yeah, I wouldn't try to go lower then the minimum you said, but thanks for the advice! And about weight, does weight factor into how high or low the minimums/maximums have to be? Or am I just overthinking this whole thing?
Weight doesn't matter, you just need to make sure the rigging point is strong enough. another thing to consider would be how much stretch your silks have, because that will take up some space too
40 denier nylong tricot. Needs weight rated. Low stretch for beginners, stretchier is comfortable esp for drops . Figure 8, carabineer: w screw lock/ or auto lock caribeener, and swivel. Buy rated equipment.
While it's possible to learn through UA-cam alone, I definitely recommend face to face lessons if at all possible, especially if you're just starting out. Face to face lessons allow you to get instant, direct feedback and you've got someone there to ensure you're doing the wraps correctly and safely. Once you've got some experience and general knowledge and understanding of the apparatus, it will be easier for you to learn from online tutorials.
I can't seem to find a video that actually talks about how to mount it to the ceiling. Am I the only one with this question? I've watched several silks rigging videos and none talk about that.
Most ceilings aren't designed for load bearing for aerial and it can be dangerous to do a DIY solution. That's why most people who practice aerial at home recommend using a portable rig / A-frame that has been designed specifically for that purpose 🙂
@@AerialBon I finally found the middle, but I'm trying to hang it like a hammock and you can feel that it's not exactly even (if that makes any sense). 🤷🏽♀️ I'll figure it out eventually. Lol
If you're hanging it like a hammock it shouldn't matter if it's uneven at the top, it will feel fine at the bottom when you're using it. You'll just have more excess on one side than the other at the top 😊

I'm working on something to make this happen! 😀
What about ceiling height? Is there a minimum for that and does it have to be HIGH?
Weight doesn't matter, you just need to make sure the rigging point is strong enough. another thing to consider would be how much stretch your silks have, because that will take up some space too
how tall is your rig?
almost 8m
Yayyy!
YES! It's so exciting getting new aerial things. I've got a few secrets I'll share with you guys soon 🤫
@@AerialBon YAY!
Do you sell them ?
Nope, there are plenty of places you can get silks from though, just do your research and make sure its all up to standard :)
40 denier nylong tricot. Needs weight rated. Low stretch for beginners, stretchier is comfortable esp for drops . Figure 8, carabineer: w screw lock/ or auto lock caribeener, and swivel.
Buy rated equipment.
Correct. Good additions if I didn't include that. All of my equipment is rated 😊
@@AerialBon these are actually notes on your video! So definitely have them in your video haha thanks
haha, I thought you were giving more information. I didn't watch my video back to see what I had included.
where do i even find a professional rigger
This is one of the reasons I opted for a free standing rig 🙂
Hey can I learn aerial skills through UA-cam on my own is it possible
While it's possible to learn through UA-cam alone, I definitely recommend face to face lessons if at all possible, especially if you're just starting out. Face to face lessons allow you to get instant, direct feedback and you've got someone there to ensure you're doing the wraps correctly and safely. Once you've got some experience and general knowledge and understanding of the apparatus, it will be easier for you to learn from online tutorials.
@@AerialBon but i dont have any in my country
That's a shame. Next best would be virtual / online lessons via video call 😊
I love you
😍😍
I can't seem to find a video that actually talks about how to mount it to the ceiling. Am I the only one with this question? I've watched several silks rigging videos and none talk about that.
Most ceilings aren't designed for load bearing for aerial and it can be dangerous to do a DIY solution. That's why most people who practice aerial at home recommend using a portable rig / A-frame that has been designed specifically for that purpose 🙂
I need to know how to correctly find the center 🤦🏼♀️
🤣 I just had a friend hold the two ends and then put my hand through the middle and pulled tight 😊
Bye blue silk!
The end of an era. My blue silk treated me well 🥺
@@AerialBon mhm :c
Music is annoying and too loud. It drowns out what your saying
Glad you found it helpful 😊
Could you buy silk (fabric at a fabric store (as it is so much cheaper) is it safe to do that?
