Although the U.S. Government did not force the issue, it encouraged the European imperial powers to negotiate an early withdrawal from their overseas colonies. The United States granted independence to the Philippines in 1946. However, as the Cold War competition with the Soviet Union came to dominate U.S. foreign policy concerns in the late 1940s and 1950s, the Truman and Eisenhower Administrations grew increasingly concerned that as the European powers lost their colonies or granted them independence, Soviet-supported communist parties might achieve power in the new states. This might serve to shift the international balance of power in favor of the Soviet Union and remove access to economic resources from U.S. allies. Events such as the Indonesian struggle for independence from the Netherlands (1945-50), the Vietnamese war against France (1945-54), and the nationalist and professed socialist takeovers of Egypt (1952) and Iran (1951) served to reinforce such fears, even if new governments did not directly link themselves to the Soviet Union. Thus, the United States used aid packages, technical assistance and sometimes even military intervention to encourage newly independent nations in the Third World to adopt governments that aligned with the West. The Soviet Union deployed similar tactics in an effort to encourage new nations to join the communist bloc, and attempted to convince newly decolonized countries that communism was an intrinsically non-imperialist economic and political ideology. Many of the new nations resisted the pressure to be drawn into the Cold War, joined in the “nonaligned movement,” which formed after the Bandung conference of 1955, and focused on internal development. The newly independent nations that emerged in the 1950s and the 1960s became an important factor in changing the balance of power within the United Nations. These countries also became vocal advocates of continuing decolonization, with the result that the UN Assembly was often ahead of the Security Council on issues of self-governance and decolonization. The new nations pushed the UN toward accepting resolutions for independence for colonial states and creating a special committee on colonialism, demonstrating that even though some nations continued to struggle for independence, in the eyes of the international community, the colonial era was ending.

Don't delete these comments because this majorly effects Europe till this day while the world around Europe in most cases has become better then us now. Decolonization is the undoing of colonialism, the latter being the process whereby imperial nations establish and dominate foreign territories, often overseas.[1] The meanings and applications of the term are disputed. Some scholars of decolonization focus especially on independence movements in the colonies and the collapse of global colonial empires.[2][3] Map of the year each country achieved independence. As a movement to establish independence for colonized territories from their respective metropoles, decolonization began in 1775 in North America. Major waves of decolonization occurred in the aftermath of the First World War and most prominently after the Second World War. Critical scholars extend the meaning beyond independence or equal rights for colonized peoples to include broader economic, cultural and psychological aspects of the colonial experience.[4][5] Extending the meaning of decolonization beyond political independence has been disputed and received criticism.[6][7][8]

The speech and the message it contains is a good one. Nevertheless, I have to echo other comments and point out the hypocrisy in continuing to supply Israel with weapons since it emerged that there are serious doubts pertaining to their adherence to international humanitarian law as one would expect of a responsible democratic nation. I understand that Iran is a continued threat and it is possible that the weapons are being supplied with some reluctance in order to be able to counter the actions of Iran. Even so, there is a different path and even with the threat of Iran, that should never be a reason to sustain an Israeli government that is more hellbent on escalation than containment. The United States has come a long way in having now near on 8 years of not engaging directly in a war. It must however now work on removing all hypocrisy and no matter who the ally may be, once they veer off of the path of adhering to international law that support for them is immediately suspended.

Our country is failing, we need to increase all forms of production in our own country while maintaining and increasing shipping of goods outwards. Meaning unfortunately we should supply arms to sides outside of our boarders while maintaining the supply of basic needs, car parts, electronics, ect. Not sure if many of you know this but the warefare industry is booming rn and every war/village skirmish thats supplied is likely via US. We are all paying for munitions sent to Ukraine via tax payer dollars and they arent even apart of NATO which is likely to be disbanded. Which is bad short term but given the right form of trade policy could be greatly beneficial to OUR country. I understand the need for a democratic state but we need to be top dog in the world before we help others.

Decolonization of Asia and Africa, 1945-1960
Between 1945 and 1960, three dozen new states in Asia and Africa achieved autonomy or outright independence from their European colonial rulers.

Harold MacMillan, British Prime Minister, helped begin decolonization
There was no one process of decolonization. In some areas, it was peaceful, and orderly. In many others, independence was achieved only after a protracted revolution. A few newly independent countries acquired stable governments almost immediately; others were ruled by dictators or military juntas for decades, or endured long civil wars. Some European governments welcomed a new relationship with their former colonies; others contested decolonization militarily. The process of decolonization coincided with the new Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States, and with the early development of the new United Nations. Decolonization was often affected by superpower competition, and had a definite impact on the evolution of that competition. It also significantly changed the pattern of international relations in a more general sense.
The creation of so many new countries, some of which occupied strategic locations, others of which possessed significant natural resources, and most of which were desperately poor, altered the composition of the United Nations and political complexity of every region of the globe. In the mid to late 19th century, the European powers colonized much of Africa and Southeast Asia. During the decades of imperialism, the industrializing powers of Europe viewed the African and Asian continents as reservoirs of raw materials, labor, and territory for future settlement. In most cases, however, significant development and European settlement in these colonies was sporadic. However, the colonies were exploited, sometimes brutally, for natural and labor resources, and sometimes even for military conscripts. In addition, the introduction of colonial rule drew arbitrary natural boundaries where none had existed before, dividing ethnic and linguistic groups and natural features, and laying the foundation for the creation of numerous states lacking geographic, linguistic, ethnic, or political affinity.
During World War II Japan, itself a significant imperial power, drove the European powers out of Asia. After the Japanese surrender in 1945, local nationalist movements in the former Asian colonies campaigned for independence rather than a return to European colonial rule. In many cases, as in Indonesia and French Indochina, these nationalists had been guerrillas fighting the Japanese after European surrenders, or were former members of colonial military establishments. These independence movements often appealed to the United States Government for support.
While the United States generally supported the concept of national self-determination, it also had strong ties to its European allies, who had imperial claims on their former colonies. The Cold War only served to complicate the U.S. position, as U.S. support for decolonization was offset by American concern over communist expansion and Soviet strategic ambitions in Europe. Several of the NATO allies asserted that their colonial possessions provided them with economic and military strength that would otherwise be lost to the alliance. Nearly all of the United States’ European allies believed that after their recovery from World War II their colonies would finally provide the combination of raw materials and protected markets for finished goods that would cement the colonies to Europe. Whether or not this was the case, the alternative of allowing the colonies to slip away, perhaps into the United States’ economic sphere or that of another power, was unappealing to every European government interested in postwar stability.
In 1946, there were 35 member states in the United Nations; as the newly independent nations of the “third world” joined the organization, by 1970 membership had swelled to 127. These new member states had a few characteristics in common; they were non-white, with developing economies, facing internal problems that were the result of their colonial past, which sometimes put them at odds with European countries and made them suspicious of European-style governmental structures, political ideas, and economic institutions.
Don't delete this comment us in Europe and America deserved better then play second fiddle to the united nations full of nations including America that owe everything they have to Europe today while Europe has become the mess it has today.

Decolonization is the undoing of colonialism, the latter being the process whereby imperial nations establish and dominate foreign territories, often overseas.[1] The meanings and applications of the term are disputed. Some scholars of decolonization focus especially on independence movements in the colonies and the collapse of global colonial empires.[2][3]
Map of the year each country achieved independence.

@@conniefoss9382 he spoke about both countries. If you didn't hear it, maybe you're senile. Meanwhile trump thinks Bogram is in Alaska.
@@reallysomebodyAh yes both wars, Vietnam the one based on a lie from an American ships captain. Then there was Afghanistan instigated by American funded Middle Eastern nations terrorists.
You seem to have left out Iraq another war based on a complete lie!
@@reallysomebody Who cares what bumbling Trump is saying? He's not in power, is he? Deal with the current problem, which is that the US continues to fund and arm a genocidal apartheid state.
The president clearly stated that it is time to change the way we fight not ending wars. 😢😮
You mean like any American wars since 2001 that has caused the deaths of over 400,000 civllians and the displacement of 38 million people!
Man served his country for so long, he is a well mannered President ❤
Just rewarded Netanyahu 8.5 billion for continuing war
Biden is a brilliant individual who has skillfully maneuvered through the election process, showing that wisdom often accompanies experience. He deserves complete acknowledgment for his meticulous planning and awareness of Kamala's strengths and energy, which are enhancing his own. Biden will likely be remembered as one of the most remarkable presidents in American history. "With Kamala Harris leading the way, America shines bright-bringing unity and strength to the USA and the world, one heart at a time!" Thank you, President Biden and Kamala Harris.

The price of weakness is a tainted legacy
War will never end, war existed before mankind. Let's just focus on winning.
The disaster is that a person is at the most miserable age and a few steps away from the grave and continues to lie, hypocrisy, and immorality. 😢
I would advise everyone to read ProPublic’s piece by Brett Murphy regarding aid/weapons transfer and the state department.
He started off his career mature. I'm sure he ended it mature.

He's right, were not interested.
Don't kid yourself - WW3 is just around the corner. John 14:6.

Yes living in peace is the ideal state of affairs but sometimes you have to fight for what you have or you die. Now is one of those times for the western world.
Bringing up Afghanistan probably not a good choice.

There's no victor or vanquished in a war ! It's the Humanity alone, which gets bruised and brutalized ! And, it's the vulnerable section of the society, which has to bear the brunt ! The sequence of events in the World History till date will amply testify to this historical fact !

I think the West is responsible all the Wars his policy is the countries of world always unstable specially East countries, West always interested the wealth of East it's oil and gases minings and more so so please best don't interfere in East countries the east countries are full struggling to stand over peoples on our foods but they fail because the big influence and crisis of economic please West Stand Together the East I am very thankful to you West 💞🇵🇰
The middle finger, or fak, is an indecent gesture. Consisting in the fact that the middle finger is raised up or forward, and the other four fingers are pressed against the palm. The middle finger acts as a phallic symbol. Sometimes the thumb is not pressed against the palm, but placed to the side, but this does not change the essence of the gesture. President of Ukraine
As a European I think US has it's duty to interfere in some agree as the strongest country in the world both economically and military. It's also the worlds only superpower.
If the US wouldn't do that then someone else would, like China and Russia for an example.
Yeś I agree with you to some degree. I do not think USA can bully or attack another country without reason like the useless Iraq war which killed alot of innocent people, it created mass immigration into Europe, it created Isis and it created a power imbalance in the middle east making Iran ALOT more powerful. It was a strategic catastrophic strategic blunder.
Because of brainwashed Muslin terrorist ignorance during the years Trump was President America didn't need middle east oil and when Americans tell communist KKK corrupted Harris YOUR FIRED - Trump will once again have America oil & gas independent because under the United States is more oil & gas than all of the middle east - also Trump will have peace once again in the world through American strength not KKK communist corrupt Biden and Harris cowards
Go to sleep, joe
Democracy is worth pursuing
why his face look like that ?
Wonderfully said. Peace amongst men🙏
What's wonderful!!!!!!
You sound like president of usa at last. Well done Mr Biden
Shameless Biden and Boris Johnson agais 😅
The war stops within
I strongly believed part of his speech was directed to Trump and more towards Netanyahu, he is hurting Israel, Netanyahu should be removed from power, he will never have the honor or decency to do it by himself.
Very well said speech and correct info
Beautiful speech ❤
I'm not a biden guy, but he did a good job with this speech
Yeah good job reading that teleprompter
I mean who is this speech for UN members of general public cuz comment section clearly have different views why waste time ?
Kind of funny when your standing behind Israel who currently has a leader who is hell bent on causing as much destruction as possible. It's sick. I wouldn't blame the Arab nations for all attacking Israel to me as an outsider who's an atheist this is very obvious. Yet strategic regional interest seems to be outweighing the most basic answer as too who is right and who is wrong...but anyway.
God blees you.
Talk is cheap and he is great at blowing his own trumpet but he is full of hypocrisy regarding the horrors he is complicit in at this moment regarding the Israel war crimes and genocide on Palestine and now Lebanon too
Its weird that in a few months he’ll be sitting in his garden doing a jigsaw puzzle and being helped to the loo!🤦♂️
To achieve sustaining peace in the Middle East, the headquarters of the UN need to be moved from NYC to Gaza City. While the Gaza Strip will be an autonomous Palestinian territory, it will house the UN with all the faculties, segments, and necessary security measures.
Speak for yourself.
Every time this guy speaks makes me cringe
I am going to miss him as a President ,still everything behind i dont see other people speak like that..
