Samsung Phone, no External Microphone Support (solution)

- After a few weeks of trying to get an external microphone to work on the Samsung Galaxy S20. I was finally able to find a solution using the RODE SC16 (usb-c to usb-c) connector. Without a usb-c compatable microphone, you will be limited to only bluetooth microphones such as the SabineTek SmartMike+ ( amzn.to/3ihiawo )

I was having a hell of a time trying to get it to work. I finally didn't push the mic plug into 3.5mm to USB C adapter all the way. I left it sticking out 1-2mm. it finally worked! Go figure
I caved and eventually got a DJI lol.
Mine is only to record our staff meetings and I don't want to dump a whole lotta money into the setup. That being said, it looks like I need a TRS to TRRS adapter between the USB C to 3.5mm adapter and the mic. @@maxlvledc
Cant believe this worked for me too 😂
Worked for me too thanx 😎
I just bought a Rose wireless me. It works with iphone immediately. I tried usbc to usbc; then sc7 with a known working adapter, and no trouble shooting has worked. Has an update happened that s21 and rode are no longer compatible? Incredibly frustrating. Could it be the app?
I used a lavalier mic before and it worked out of the box, now the lavalier does not work. Any ideas?
Only way I found to fix this issue, download open camera and adjust settings. 👍👍I just spent $160 on a Roland go mixer pro x and was getting no sound.
I think I cried a little inside. Lol
Downloaded the open camera app adjusted to external mic and now I have sound.
Hope this helps you and anyone else with a similar issue.
I feel alot better now. 😁
I have been using the Open Camera app with my Samsung A7 until last month. Now the app doesnt detect the microphone anymore, and I m not sure what went wrong. My external mic is Conica CVM D02
@@MegaAluchi will the phone itself detect the external microphone?
Every brand has to hide settings in odd places... Lol
I'm not sure why the app don't work ??
@@scottfaucett5747 I tried Samsung Voice Recording app, but it didnt detect it either. Really weird!
are you able to livestream to instagram and get audio from the mic?
Have you tried:
1. Disable usb problem solving
2. Disable/Enable OTG disable android autorouting.
It seems some usb dacs prefer handling usb connection and some rely on autorouting.
I think I figured it out! I had to open the camera then click on the "more" tab.. then click on pro video, plug in a USB mic and then click on USB mic on the menu ....I'm excited I figured it out!
What!!!?! Must try this
Can't find USB mic on the menu :(
I can see the USB symbol & letters, but they are ghost and I do not get any response when the C port mic is plugged in and I click on the ghost letters/symbol... and ideas?
@@MichaelGoddardEnergieBewegung I have an S20. I'm in the same boat. The option is still greyed out even though the phone knows the mic is attached, and I've purchased a couple different connectors to try. I've decided just to work with what I have and eventually just buy an actual video camera once I do some product research.
I did what Organic Gardening suggested and I could click on all those things but it still didn't record even though it said it was recording through the USB.
I then plugged in a microphone, that stands alone away from the body, and it pluggs straight into my Note 20. It works! 😄😅 It is 7RYMS SR-USB MINI Mini Condenser USB microphone. It cost me $85 Australian dollars. I now have to figure out how to position it to record while doing a fluid art painting (I have always used an extra long cabled clip on mic which goes to my phone on a tall stand. Though I am relieved that I am going to be able to record again for my art channel. Strange though, as I've had this phone for a couple of years and have been able to use the clip on mics before. Unfortunately my dogs got to my previous clip on mic and chewed it to pieces and I have since bought two clip on mics, thinking that the first one was faulty as it didn't work. I've bought three of the adapters thinking that they must be at fault. This video has helped me to realise that it's the phone that's the problem. (I haven't been able to buy exactly the same mic as I previously had, unfortunately.) Thank you Maxlvledc for this video. Cheers, Alison Hood from Western Australia
I'm using an A51s, and nothing, I repeat NOTHING has worked for me. Open camera, changing settings, removing phone pouch, nothing has worked. I'm frustrated actually, I don't know what to do anymore at this point.
Its quite frustrating because my phone is the only source of my content, I wish I had known this.
same here. I wanna cry but also smash something at the same time. I'm so frustrated why ON EARTH is it so utterly impossible????????? AahhhhhHhhhhh
Hi thats very unfortunate, did you find a solutions yet?
I have same issue with A32
i am also facing the same issue with same phone
If someone here already figured it out, please let know!
My A33 is stressing me to the roof! It's missing the hole to plug-in the mic. On the other hand,
my A41 has the hole to plug the mic in, but it doesn't work.
Brother I have bought Samsung A22. I have got same problem. I am irritated because I purchased this mobile to use mic in order to make videos. Now I am totally exhausted.
Did you ever find a workaround or a way to keep recording? I've got a Galaxy a25, and I'm just using headphones in the 3.5 mm without a microphone so it's got a TRS connection rather than a TRRS which has the microphone built-in so if you just use the headphones without a microphone you can still use the phones microphone to record. But that's very inconvenient and it doesn't sound right. Any ideas is welcomed.
I have a a newer Rode shotugun mic. My phone sees it but no sound. I do have a Rode wrieless Go 2. Just tried it! It worked. Thank you!!
Hi! I have a Samsung A14 phone, but when I connect an external microphone, I hear a hiss in the recording. What do you think could be the problem?
I'm so glad I happened upon your video. I've been getting bad advice, spending on expensive connectors, staying up late researching online, and finally thought I was ready to record. Then, after locating the internal Android mic, I tried a pre amped SM57 into the 3.5mm input with zero results. Now I know and I can start checking new phones, THANKS
You have to click on more (in your camera settings) and go to the PRO VIDEO to use an external mic, you don't need a new phone.
If thats the issue you are having..
The issue I'm having is adjusting the mic, it's canceling out too much 🤦🏻♀️
Thanks for posting this video with your frustrations.... I am trying Note 20 Ultra using SC16 cable to Rode Wireless Mic using the Camera Video Pro function.... most surprising is the Samsung has not fixed this yet .... haven't tried other 3rd party apps yet...
note: I think the primary issue is the newer Samsung phones does not have a built in DAC for the USB c.. any adapter used must have the DAC in the cable. (not all 3.5 to USB c is compatible)
DAC? Interesting I'll look into it Thanks
@guscruz5076 did you find anything out?
DAC is not the solution...
My Problem:
I'm using a DAW (FL Mobile)
All I want to do is use headphones as a monitor speaker and record vocals through my S21 mic.
I purchased a USB-C to 3.5mm jack [f] and it doesn't pick up my mic at all. I have tried all sorts of settings but no success. This is a major software problem imo and as a result, I will not be in a rush to purchase another Samsung device until they resolve this.
I can't get my mic to work for my Google Pixel 3 either ... I'm shocked to learn that these phones just don't support external mics, so frustrating
Have you switched off/on OTG auto routing settings in developer options?
This worked for me. Switched off auto routing, then switched it back on.
I bought a lavalier microphone with a 3.5 to usb c adapter included and it shows as "connected USB device is not supported" at the top on my s21 and doesn't work in video or voice recording applications. Very disappointed and worse now I see this has been a problem for a long time and Samsumg still hasn't fixed the issue.
Same thing here and I'd thought it's about the USB C adapter, but it appears it's not 😢
Thank you!!! Just brought S23 yesterday, so frustrated 😖
Any results since then?
I can't find any firm evidence online that USB external microphones in general, work with the Samsung S23 Ultra. I intend to but a cheep microphone to test mine. (UK).
Any results since then?
It does say on the website to use their own cables.
I can confirm that I have the dji mic connected to my note 20 ultra directly from the transmitter to the phone with the USB c attachment and have been able to successfully use it as a mic in video pro mode. the only thing your not able to do is hear audio playback with the transmitter connected and watching the video, but once you unplug the transmitter you can hear sound again
Hey
I got a dji mic yesterday and have problems getting the signal into my note 20 , i tried the direct USB connection and even a USB c to 3.5 adapter but nothing works
Do you have an tips how i can fix that?
I'm having this very same issue, did you found a solution?
It's now April 2023, did you find any solution? I bought a Rode VideoMic 2 which has usb-c port. I got my usb-c to usb-c cable and when trying to record, there is no audio on the video when I play it back.
I'm having this exact problem right now. Same microphone. Did you find a solution?
I'm using a $300 ($250 now) Rode NTG mic and I have the TRS male to TRRS male adapter, going to the Samsung usb-c to 3.5mm female. My S23 Ultra only recognizes it as headphones, nothing else. This is such a wild blunder on not only their flagship line of devices but entire product lines that i'm blown away. My old S10+ worded fine with everything. Though it also had a 3.5mm line in too.
I am having this problem but I am using SC16 cable on my Sansung note 9 and my wireless Go 2 still dont work on other apps besides the Rode Reporter app. Very annoying.
Hmm, that is weird
Did you find the solution to it??
It's 2024 and I'm having the same issue, Samsung acts like nothing has changed so your video is right on. If I plug in headphones without a microphone to sing, which is what I use it for primarily, it's very very quiet I've got a Galaxy a25 it's a 2003 model it's only like a month old. It seems like Samsung is wanting users and maybe Android too is wanting this to get into the development game. I'm not interested in doing that anymore I worked on PCs for a long time and I just am burned out. I think their game plan is to phase out the 3.5 mm just like Apple did. That just is s***** I hate that idea, and as far as I know there is no two-channel or higher BT earbuds with microphone. Maybe they're developing it I don't know but, kudos on the video it still holds true 2 years later. Also it could just be a ploy to sell a lot more accessories like you did because that's what I'm considering. I had a galaxy a71 5G and it worked perfectly with the microphone headset combo in the 3.5 mm but it fell in some water and now the screen is not touched sensitive and it's stuck in safe mode no matter what I do, I know the volume down button is stuck but I really am not inclined to take it apart every time I do it destroys the phone. So yeah it's a pickle of a situation for sure 🙄😫
The solution at the begining was using a T adaptar that separates mic from headphone and this worked. Than I understood that the issue was on the mic wire. I just changed it for a 3.5mm TRRS to TRS wire and this solves the problem.
Very informative video. Thank you. Do you know if the Samsung galaxy A14 supports external audio through the USB port ? I'm currently using the 3.5m jack import, but the audio is distorted. I cannot find an answer anywhere as to whether or not my phone will take audio in through the USB. I don't want to buy the mic if it's not going to work.
Same problem with my a14 phone. I bought a type C wireless microphone and its not working idont know how can fix this
@Robert and Cheryl Vlog I took my A14 back to shop a week after l bought it because the mic input didn't do the job properly with voice & music. So l exchanged the phone for a A34 5G with the USB port only.. then l bought a Behringer interface and connected it between my sound mixer & the phone, and the sound & video quality is absolutely SUPERB. Hope that helps 👍
So I have found some usb dacs like to handle usb connectivity and some rely on phone autorouting. Till example my usb mixer prefers at Developer Options "OTG disable auto routing = ON" but my wireless lavallier mics prefer android auto routing. So switching OTG setting helps on USB audio inputs.
This is such bullahit. I have a galaxy S23 Ultra and I not able to use an external mic as it says audio will record through USB but there's no sound.
ridiculous... i have a s22 ultra + rode wireless go 1 and all sorts of cables by now (cause i've been trying different solutions)... most times it doesnt work, then out of the blue it works, but if i try to unplug it so i can listen to what i just recorded it wont recognise the mic again most times...its just stupid
Any results since then, im super pissed but it seems like im gonna have to try the Rode wireless go 2 like this says.
@Ephremjlm1 yes, I found out that it's actually the Samsung camera app that it not compatible. I contacted Rode and they said they're trying to work with Samsung. The app to download and use is called "Open Camera". That camera app is compatible with the Rode mics and you will be able to use it on your galaxy devices.
@GodAlwaysWins is there some kind of setting I need to adjust? I tried downloading it but it didn't seem to work. I'm using a rode NTG mic. It's like a $300 mic at time of purchase so my mind is being blown lol.
@@Ephremjlm1 it should just work.
Does every iPhone work with an external microphone?
You're awesome. I really appreciated your video. Your right on spot. Thanks brother
I had a similar odyssey with my Samsung S22, nothing worked and I finally got the Moman CP2. It worked right after plugging it in with every app: camera, voice recorder, etc. Don't go through the hassle, Samsung won't fix this. At least as far as the Exynos versions of their phones are concerned.
Thank you for this video. So have I understood right - the only option is to get rode's USB-c cable? I have Samsung s21.
open camera, select more, select video pro. usb mic option there
@Andrew Fenwick Thank you for your response. I know where it is but it doesn't allow me to choose this option, shows up only faded in the menu. I have an adapter that allows me to play music etc.
I am doing live from my Huawei p30 pro, and i am thinking of røde with sc16 cable to the phone. But now next problem, how do i charge phone at the same time? Does it work with some kind of usb c splitter? Need help!
No its dependad on the usb device if it supports simultanous charging. You cant use splitter caple with android. Tested. Inputting charger will kill usb audio.
Fnally working on the samsung s10 lite, android 10, using hollyland mark max! Mic!! Using open camera app.
I had to find developer options, media, and toggle off usb audio routing.
Used a usb c adpter with jack female end, then male to male to the mic.
It was only a 2 line male to male in between.
Now i may need to try the usb c to usbc the device came with.
Helpful Tips:
Absolutely plug in any usb c adapter in phone first (it has a female end),
then next plug your male to male cord in that your mic is conected to.
I should try the usb c to usb c now.
Note some phones require the male to male cord to be
trs to trrs...basically those three lines on a jack (they call it 4 line cc7), while the other side has a two line male connected to the recieving mic.
Your adapter with female port may need to support 4 line trrs plug.
Omg I just had this problem with my Samsung, soo annoying
what hardware were you using?
Thank you, thank you, thank you. once I switched to the USB C to USB C cable it finally worked.
Did you purchase the Rode SC16 wire? Or did you use another brand USB-C to USB-C? Thanks
Samsung s22 here and in the first few months my mic worked and it stopped working 😮
Sir since 2 years ago on galaxy note 10 we had samson g track pro, fifine, rode video ntg, blue yeti, zoom recorders and usb c lav mics, conect usb c to usb c the best mic to do that is rode video ntg, go to pro video click mic select usb mic and control levels.
I've got s21 ultra and sc16 wire and still don't recognise it
Check the orientation of the cable, I had to rotate them a few times to get them to work properly. Bent side should be in the Microphone.
did you find a solution?
@@akrextra yes thanks
@@yemenishawlahsa1256was your solution a new phone? What was it to get microphone to plug in & work.
Ironically I have had an issue with the Rode micro and the note 8. I've tried the dongles, I've tried the TRS to TRSS cable I ordered separately. That cable won't seat properly in the headset port, so it doesn't detect the mic whatsoever. You may want to check the TRSS cable with your phone though. I've even pondered charging up my older Sony Xperia it's camera is 4k and comparable to phones 5 yrs newer. I wonder if it's all due to Samsung wanting to phase out the mic jack completely, which is part of the reason I don't want to upgrade my 5 yr old phone. That and I just recently got my first crack in the phone which is on the back anyhow. I know this is an older video I just thought with me constantly searching this issue over months and still not seeing a bona fide answer, that you may still be wanting an answer. Especially considering I was already subbed to you as opposed to all the tech channels I've had to watch over recent months due to this problem with all aux cable type connections.
Have you tried with the voice recorder app? It seems to recognise my external mic, but when I use Pro video mode the USB option is greyed out...
Nope, I'm wondering if a usbc that splits to both mic and headphones will work.
@@maxlvledc OK, so I just tried again with a Rode SC7 TRS to TRRS patch cable instead of the one supplied with the mic, and it works...

So do you recommend iPhone? All my life I have been an android user though.
I have an S10 lite and I cannot get it to recognize a wireless mic through the type c connector. Any advice?
Its currently not working with an adapter either. Id rather get some other type of new phone.

I see guys on UA-cam just plugging in the rca cable with the trs at the end plugged in to the back of the trrs adapter then either straight in to the phone if it has a 3.5 mm port or plugged in to the back of the phones corresponding adapter C or iPhone adapter and it works for them now what is the mystery with this that nothing I try works my first adapter was a basic trrs adapter female input port on back with the male trrs after trying everything and getting no results I purchased a second one trrs with the splitting ports one is mic in the other headphones in 3.5 mm ports and still nothing..
I was only able to make it work with the Rode cable. I now have the DJI mics and they are FANTASTIC!
@maxlvledc were you having the same issues with the other TRRS adapters ?
I have sound, the mic connects, but it sounds shit even in open camera,I use my phones with a guitar rig and put the final mix direct over the video, never had the issue on my old phone with a headphone jack and the unprocessed audio option in open camera,it cant record a multitrack without downgrading to hell,im guessing that the sample rate is garbage through that usb adapter, any body encounter this or fix it?

It was working until Nov 2022 with my Samsung A7 2017 model with Comica AVM microphone. Now neither the phone nor the Open Cam app detect the ext. Mic
THis is real problem. My USB mixer can input sound trough Samsung A32 phone, but wireless usb microphones cannot input any audio even OTG setting activated and still no sound from usb wirelelss mics.... The problem is manufacture problems, as they dont allow generic usb mode, they have only 5 options to input photos, charging, android auto etc. The software need to support generic usb input until it can support all types usb microphones. They probaply think internal mic is suffice and dont think its important for professionals to use external USB microphones. Also they should add more audio hardware features to android to be able select input manually.. Disable internal mic or external mic...
I confirm now got it working on my phone. I switched USB problem solving off and switched OTG setting off so let android auto handle usb connection routing then my wireless mic receiver started to work. Tested with Audio Recorder and Facebook all work.
I have also been quietly crying inside about this. Wanted to use my phone from my audio mixer. Can only get my old 3.5mm to record. I bought this s22 for v8deo quality too 😂
