trump doesn't seem to understand that value isn't the best option anymore. GvG enabled tempo and combos. Despite being arena, you should be able to adapt.
Flamestrike was always going to be the achilles heel for this arena draft, it looks like future drafts will also be hammered by this card in future too.
bo12333 uh… faceless is an epic. epics arent not common. if you dont pick stormwind based on the possibility that your opponents could have faceless, you're doing something wrong.
In my point of view, this draft is really terrible when he has to draft Frost Shock, Far Sight etc. So it's not really surprising that he didn't go very far.
I think I'm finally seeing why even the best players are doing so badly. All good players understand the concepts of how to properly play control decks, and in Arena not having Late Game choices is fatal. Now, in GvG, with the advent of so many new cards that are mostly early game, the choices you get for Late Game are far and in-between. It also means many of the safe choices (Consecration, Hex etc.) aren't found as often. A 7-Flamestrike deck is still possible, but it's not nearly as likely. I'd run the changes in probability chance of getting a specific common card are, but I'll wait until the release to get trustworthy info for it. Resultant Theory: For your next Arena Run, try a different tack. Get Late Game more often, even if they seem like weak picks, but be reasonable. In other words, increase your value for higher costs. So it's not an ogre? *FORCE TANK MAX* To anyone that reads this, I ask you to try an Arena Run with this theory. Post replies with your deck composition (roughly) and ultimate game results. I want to find out if I have something here.
My highest arena run with GvG cards is only 9 wins ( I used to get 10+ wins before the prelaunch event often ) with a deck that had alot of early aggression. 3 dark cultists, 2 shrinkmeisters, dark iron dwarves, holy novas, etc. But I am always lacking in late game cards to play, I've just realised. I will keep your theory in mind, thanks.
Side Note: If you get Jeeves early on, he's _insane in the membrane_ if you plan on going full low-cost rush. If you see a Jeeves you pick a Jeeves, and then focus on early game and additional card drawing mechanics.
This is also the reason why, at least from my experience, druids are doing really well now, even more than before, as the whole class is more geared towards strong lategame minions. A Driud with just a Ironbark, a Forcetank, an Ogre, two Forstwolfs and a DotC got me, a rather average player, to 8 wins by simply overwhelming the opponent with big minions.
I did a Hunter arena where one of the most late-game cards I had was Windfury Harpy. It went 0 wins. On the other hand, I did a Priest arena where I had two Boulderfist Ogres, a Frost Elemental, a Holy Nova and a Bomb Lobber. Earlier in the game, the significant cards I had were two Ogre Brutes, two Shrinkmeisters and a Youthful Brewmaster. I can't tell how many times the Shrinkmeisters saved my back. As well as the Lobber + Brewmaster, and the Freeze spare part. The Priest run went 11 wins.
"Spare Part was basically deal 4 damage, not that great.... but..." lolwat? How can 4 damage for 1 mana from a card that didn't even take a spot in your deck ever be "not that great"?
You must be kidding me. Why does everyone go crazy over hunter if not for the 2 mana 2 damage to opponent face. And besides, in this particular situation, the 4 damage was not limited to the opponents face, it was in his minions, could have been directed anywhere.
***** I think you are over reacting mate. I just disagreed with something Trump said. At no point did I analyze everything he said. Just to clarify, I have no doubt that he is much better at hearthstone than me. Chill bro.
Trump is losing his games because as ''the major of value town'', he tries to get too much value out of his cards, he is too greedy. He is desconsidering a very important thing on arena lately: Tempo. (Yes there is also the increased ammount of RNG cards wich means worse players can still pull some wins out of luck, but you can almost always use the random effects to your favor if you play it smart.) As far as I can see, GvG has too many "win more" cards. There aren't enough cards like Consecration running around to balance out players with commanding leads. Wich means tempo just became a lot more important now. I feel like arena is now even more a constant fight betwen value and tempo. There are 2 ways you can loose a game: getting behind on tempo, or running out of cards. So you always have to be making choices betwen playing a card so that you can get the most value out of it preventing you from running out of cards, or playing a card that gets you some tempo, wich means you are more likely to get the board control. A nice example of that is the choice of playing cultmaster when you are about to send 2 guys into death, for great card value, or playing a yeti, that would develop your board, getting you ahead on tempo, wich means you would have better trades in the next turn, and if the opponent is low enough, you would be able to start rushing him with your superior board presence. A constant choice betwen fast tempo cards or slow value cards is what it is.
I agree. Tempo now is more prevailing than ever. Especially after GvG with all the cards that buff other cards and cards that do damage to random minions.. These are significantly better when you're ahead on board than behind.
You may be right about the meta change, but that's a very bad thing in my opinion. Hearthstone has always been a RNG-heavy game, which means two things: It's always going to be unbalanced and it's impossible to give players enough feedback to let them analyze every situation. Increasing tempo therefore means (especially in Arena games) that the player will face far too many situations in which he/she has to basically guess blindly what choice to make. Since there are not enough "comeback" cards in GvG, that means that you'll be relying on luck in many situations that will either make or break you. In other words: HS has become even less skill-based than it already was. Players will reach a certain level and from that point on they'll have to rely purely on luck. Except for tournaments of course, but even there RNG will be a bigger factor.
Insomnia153 Not really, arena has become way more interesting. It isn't anymore that boring card value game, where the choices are somewhat obvious all the time, you just had to go for the most valuable play. Now you have that constant choice of ''do i want to get value, or should i go for a tempo play''. It just increments the gameplay possibilities, wich is very nice. And about the RNG, what is a card game without some luck involved? It makes things more interesting, you always have to take some calculated risks. GvG has a lot of high risk high reward cards, that makes the gameplay a lot more fun and rewarding.
That's one way to look at it, maybe it just depends on the type of player. I don't mind "some luck" like in Poker (which I play a lot), but in Hearthstone the luck factor has always been very high and it just increases with GvG. Even in tournaments, the best player rarely wins. The only relevant one that I can remember is Savjz winning the second Seatstory Cup, while tournaments like WCA and the Blizzard WCS had winners that didn't always make the best plays and got very lucky. LiBo still haunts my dreams. ;-) The meta change with GvG doesn't have to be bad, but I think that while it will be a lot more interesting for casual players, it will be even more off-putting for players that want skill to matter at least to some degree. I belong to the second sort and that's why HS has always been in equal parts entertaining and frustrating to me.
as simple as that looked at 17:50, im actually really proud of trump for seeing that... he misses lethals easier than that a lot, and that one i didn't even se... GOOD JOB TRUMP :)
Trump, I think you need to reconsider value trading vs tempo deck building. And with the new combo, I find it easier to build arena deck with synergy/combo. Best of luck tmrw.
Damn Trump I'm surprised you're not doing better. I find arena easier with the new cards. Maybe it's just the experimentation phase. I did play a warrior who coined out battle rage turn 1 though, so you can guess where that game went.
I always pick micro machine because it's broken. It say at the start of your turn gain 1 attack but it gets 1 attack at the start and end of your turn.
Missed a trick with the panda'd air totem at the end there. In order to increase the odds of getting the taunt Trump should have played the air totem first. I think he's made a number of other little errors, the biggest being not adapting to how his opponents play. When your opponent plays fast, you have to play fast when you know that you have no catch up cards (board clears or reliable hard removals) and weak late game. It's also possible that with the new cards announced all the newbies to arena are simply making bad plays, playing their hands fast and hellbent. All the while Trump is considering how a pro would react to a situation and make value plays his opponent is just fucking killing him.
Yup the trend shifted in Arena from super value to tempo. Cards are considered more sticky now since the GvG expansion. I've noticed people going for face more often and usually it does pretty well. The current weakest class in Arena is a board control warlock for sure.
It's interesting how Trump's performance changed since the expansion hit. My winrate went from ~71% to >80% so far. The sample size is rather small but the trend is quite obvious at the moment.
Trump is terrible at playing fast. GvG is very fast because they added *zero* board clears. You used to be almost guaranteed at least one Flamestrike in a mage draft before, now you can go through the entire draft and get none. That means there are less catch up mechanisms, which means that you need to stay ahead in tempo. Trump is terrible at playing fast.
Dworgi Yeah, it seems like he can't grasp the whole tempo concept. This results, for example, in him not valuing taunt enough. You need cards like Shieldmasta to force your opponent into a 1-for-2 if you fall behind during the first turns, sometimes even over cards like Yeti. Yeti is great, but it doesn't have an immidiate effect and can just clear one small minion at a time. At your turn. Which is, you named it, the opposite of fast. :D
I don't think I'm a great hearthstone player, but i'm decent, rank 8 was my highest, so I think I make some fairly clever plays. But when I saw trump take his Flametongue totem back so he could have it affect all minions for lethal, that blew my mind!!! xD
Well GvG made things interesting, I'm not that great of a player but out of 5 runs so far my lowest was 10 wins and it's just weird seeing Trump struggle these past runs.
Trump, I went 12 wins for my first time with a mage deck yesterday, so don't cry about not having big late minions... And consider taking the tank card with divine shield, 7/7 cuz it's really good
I like the new cards, but they seemed to have increased even further the amount of variance. As an aside, how do they make a 3/2 with wind fury cost 2? Granted at 3 mana it would be awful so maybe a 2/2 for 2? Missed a two drop, despite having 7 of them plus a smite in the deck, and just got smashed by turn one coin 3/2 guy, turn two 2 Leper Gnomes, turn 3 2/8 Taunt guy. Taking 12 just for missing a two drop seems a little harsh. Granted he had an amazing draw, but the game was over on turn 4.
nice to see Trump get a taste of how "fun" arena is when all the RNG doesn't go in your favor for a change ;) This is basically how 60% of my arenas go. shitty drafts, no clears, no catching up, strong opponents. But hey, Hearthstone is so much more fun because of all the RNG, right? right? :D (not just talking about the RNG vs Trash expansion but about how arena works in general. picking only 30 cards makes it such a terribly random limited format... oh well, back to a real TCG o/)
I'm starting to see a weird pattern in the arena since the patch, for some reason is really hard to get any kind of late game, and i think that is what's causing the general drop in everyone's win rate.
It's true that trump is doing worse, but he's getting a lot of information from testing out new cards, and I think that will help him in the long run. And I like seeing new cards.
Agreed: the new meta has impacted the strategy. Tempo is now more important than before. Value Town is no longer the capital - Tempo Town is the new rage. The probability of drafting a "catch up" card has decreased significantly.
Mages board control is way too good in arena. Flamestrike should be a rare in arena. They usually have 2 copies in their deck because of it's just a common and if you aren't ahead with 5+ hp minions on the board, you just lose. If you're behind you just stay behind. It's not even fun to play against.
It's not that big of a deal as long as you don't play micro machine on a board where an enemy 2/3 is already present. If it survives your opponents turn it becomes a 3/2 so it will still trade well against a 2/3 they play anyway. The potential upside is quite good. Even if they silence it, having a 2 mana minion soak up a valuable silence is still good value.
I suppose i must specify. I fear the terrible part is not being able to play it into 2/3 because you cant rely on having alternative drop. Not being able to 2 drop is potentially game losing because of the tempo loss
MrEntinen Its risky yeah. In early game, the goal is to play the Micromachine on an empty board. That way it will be a 4/2 by the time you attack an opponent's minion. Coining out Micromachine on turn1 is probably the best way to use it. All in all I agree its somewhat situational and risky, but seeing how it can get out of control pretty quickly, and its a mech... Its worth picking. But its still hard to say if its better than a vanilla 3/2
I thought that after release of GvG I start playing even more of Hearthstone - new arena, new constructed. Bought some packs, saved for them for a while. Hell, thought that it will cover at least half of the cards released. But I guess there are less commons than rares/epics etc. Now I feel like loser once again.Only today my crackle dealt 3 dmg to 4 health guys (in arena) losing me the game. First time ever I ended up with 0-3! So right now I lose to some rng, don't know cards, can't build any new solid constructed which I thought will be fun. Learn everything once again without fun of using it and collecting cards. Because 40 packs mean not single legendery.
Can somebody explain me the sense of far sight please??? If you even draw a Stormwind Champion with that. He costs only 3 mana less, bu you even payed 3 mana for the far sight... Where is the value? Am I so stupid, or why did Trump really picked it???
Far Sight is really bad because it's so inconsistent, but the dream is that paying for an expensive card like Stormwind Champion in two smaller installments is more powerful. For example, you could drop it on turn 4-6 when people aren't ready for it, or play it on the same turn as some other card(s) that wouldn't normally be possible, like say a Sen'jin Shieldmasta and a Feral Spirits, which is 13 mana without Far Sight, 10 mana with Far Sight, and those taunts would be buffed and would protect the Stormwind Champion. Of course, using turn 3 to play Far Sight rather than just playing a minion or removal spell is a tremendous tempo loss, and Stormwind Champion is a terrible card to drop when you're behind on board.
it's an expensive card draw with a potential for nasty combos or big drops the following turn. you could drop a 7 mana creature on turn 4 if you choose to forgo your 3rd turn. Or play a "free"
So, i've just opened my 3 GvG packs from release. I got two Hobgoblins so i thought i'd try and make a deck around them on Warlock. Warlock now has stupid value with Whisp and Voidwalker. In case people start playing this legit, i wanna comment now so i can take credit for that shizz! xD
...That time rewinded Flametongue play might have been one of the prettiest things I've ever seen.
it was so good.
I missed it until he played that card....
My mouth was agape when he did that play...I was thinking "man, I NEVER would have seen to do that". Then again this is why Trump is a streamer/caster/legend-player!

trump doesn't seem to understand that value isn't the best option anymore. GvG enabled tempo and combos. Despite being arena, you should be able to adapt.
Combos in arena are a very VERY low priority. In constructed its different but in arena value is key. Even with GvG cards.
OfficialHighduke That's not true, even the smallest combo can win you the game in arena.
Gebirges Yes but the chances of picking a good combo is difficult, and even then its very unlikely you'll draw both cards needed for it.
OfficialHighduke
in GvG the chance of drafting a combo, and might it be a small 2 card mech combo, is very high
Gebirges Yes but what is the chance you will draw said 2 card mech combo in a situation which is might be used to its full potential? Very small.
31:24 Topdeck Flamestrike. Basically playing arena in a nutshell

Mad Hatters in jeans
Every draft is hammered by Flamestrike.
Raikaria1
Yes but mostly due to the new cards introduced lacking tougher minions.
Mad Hatters in jeans And because it's flamestrike :P
People whining about Flamestrike again but noone complaints about weapons ... LEL
17:42 . That was an AMAZING use of time rewinder and totem use !!!
That time rewinder on the flametongue totem to reach lethal was pretty sick. That warrior must have been pissed. xD
Jesus this new expansion has hit Trump very hard, barely getting passed 5 wins
*past
Trump is all about value but he's going to have to learn how to play tempo drafts if he's going to have any success in the near future.

These GvG arenas provided so many clips for a Trump Reacts video :P

That victory against the warrior...wow. Just goes to show that even a spare part can swing games.
I really can't get why, but when Trump said "Why Ogre so smart..." i died of laugh.

Man, the spare parts plays make some damn cool combos.
That 2nd match ending was awesome.

Thanks for curing the boredom trump
dang that 29 burst damage with flametounge and rewind was too terrific

Dworgi the new priest 'light bomb' card or whatever it's called is most certainly a board clear.
What does storm-pike commando say when you play it?
I've got a HUUUUGE gun.
I've got a huge cock
omg the first game, i woulda never seen that time rewinder totem play!
Pick fel reaver trump, its a very good card in arena. Hell, you said so yourself during your review and you were spot on.
I got fatigued turn 6 and still won with fell reaver
How did that Tinkertown Technician get a boost at 21:35?
The harvest golem is also a mech card now.
Harvest golem is a mech
harvest golem is a mech
even if it doesn't say mech on the bottom? are they going to patch that?
Crash Bandicoot yes it does, it just only shows up when you scroll over it, have it in your hand, or look in the deck list, same as the rest.
I don't think I'm a great hearthstone player, but i'm decent, rank 8 was my highest, so I think I make some fairly clever plays.
But when I saw trump take his Flametongue totem back so he could have it affect all minions for lethal, that blew my mind!!! xD
WOW that spare part lethal :O
Is it true? Is the path of the value failing? But then, which path do we follow? =(
Well GvG made things interesting, I'm not that great of a player but out of 5 runs so far my lowest was 10 wins and it's just weird seeing Trump struggle these past runs.
Trump, I went 12 wins for my first time with a mage deck yesterday, so don't cry about not having big late minions... And consider taking the tank card with divine shield, 7/7 cuz it's really good
what deck tracker is trump using?
I like the new cards, but they seemed to have increased even further the amount of variance.
As an aside, how do they make a 3/2 with wind fury cost 2? Granted at 3 mana it would be awful so maybe a 2/2 for 2? Missed a two drop, despite having 7 of them plus a smite in the deck, and just got smashed by turn one coin 3/2 guy, turn two 2 Leper Gnomes, turn 3 2/8 Taunt guy. Taking 12 just for missing a two drop seems a little harsh. Granted he had an amazing draw, but the game was over on turn 4.
nice to see Trump get a taste of how "fun" arena is when all the RNG doesn't go in your favor for a change ;)
This is basically how 60% of my arenas go. shitty drafts, no clears, no catching up, strong opponents. But hey, Hearthstone is so much more fun because of all the RNG, right? right? :D
(not just talking about the RNG vs Trash expansion but about how arena works in general. picking only 30 cards makes it such a terribly random limited format... oh well, back to a real TCG o/)
There is a card called Far Sight? Mind Blown
Feel the pain of the common man.
why did you pick cobra over drake?
I'm starting to see a weird pattern in the arena since the patch, for some reason is really hard to get any kind of late game, and i think that is what's causing the general drop in everyone's win rate.
Yes there are less high cost choices, but that just means you will get out of cards more often. Trump is loosing because of tempo.
hey trumpoooo, could you upload the 5v5 gvg pack sponsored by blizz?
It's true that trump is doing worse, but he's getting a lot of information from testing out new cards, and I think that will help him in the long run. And I like seeing new cards.
That time rewind flame tounge combo wombo. wow
Agreed: the new meta has impacted the strategy. Tempo is now more important than before. Value Town is no longer the capital - Tempo Town is the new rage.
The probability of drafting a "catch up" card has decreased significantly.
17:35 omg!! the plays!!!
Thanks to Trump, I've been using "That's the dream" a lot.
wow… time rewinder. that creative accounting tho.
Dat Micro Machine sounds so much like Dodger that it's creeping me out.
That use of time rewinder was gross.
Well, I guess I am not getting much sleep tonight. Course you Jens! ;)
That Shaman vs Warrior play. at first i though Trump gonna lose :0
but still, that time rewind/totem combo total serendipity!
The shock; the original spare part.
any Flamestrike nerf ideas?
Sorry Trump, but i really enjoy seeing that im not the only one having a hard time with the drafts.
arena is going to cause much rage for many people in the coming months.
Dat flamestrike topdeck tho.
Mages board control is way too good in arena. Flamestrike should be a rare in arena. They usually have 2 copies in their deck because of it's just a common and if you aren't ahead with 5+ hp minions on the board, you just lose. If you're behind you just stay behind. It's not even fun to play against.
Is it just me or is micro machine kinda terrible with the influx of playable 2 mana 2/3s?
Is it out for american acounts now?
Ok, thank you, so this card makes a least a little bit sense, but still sucks...
far sight new card? ;P
"I'll never play crackle turn 2" first game, crackle turn 2
With 'Ogres' the lightning only activates when they miss
So, i've just opened my 3 GvG packs from release. I got two Hobgoblins so i thought i'd try and make a deck around them on Warlock. Warlock now has stupid value with Whisp and Voidwalker. In case people start playing this legit, i wanna comment now so i can take credit for that shizz! xD
I'm feeling the gvg bad arena luck too, sure i suck normally but i got 3 legendarys in a pretty decent deck and I only made it to 6 wins
gvg is killing my arena runs... used to be able to 8-3 to 10-3 no problem...
now its really hard for me to get 3-3 or even 4-3...
17:00 Top Plays December 2014 :D
Trump's feeling the PJSalt
Honestly the ogre dude might of been better in the farsight pick, if you had the foresight to see your curve lol.
