The Unusual Process of Barrel-Squeezed Bourbon | Jim Beam Devil's Cut

- We're here in the Brewzle labs doing an honest review of Jim Beam Devil's Cut. Is this better than the normal Jim Beam? Let's see how it ranks up to our previous reviews.
From Jim Beam's Website:
We take the liquid we extract from our barrels, blend it with extra-aged Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey and bottle it at 90 proof to create a premium bourbon with extra depth and complexity. Designed to be enjoyed neat or on the rocks, Jim Beam Devil’s Cut has a robust flavor with deep color, aroma and character.
When bourbon ages, a portion of the liquid evaporates through the barrel and up toward the heavens. Believed to be angels claiming their dues, this has been dubbed the “angel’s share.” Jim Beam Devil’s Cut is not that portion. Instead, it’s made from the liquid that gets trapped deep inside the wood of the barrel-the devil’s share. And through our proprietary process, we’ve found a way to extract it.

I am giving full credit for that rendition of devil came down to Georgia. It was a perfect adaptation of a perfect song
I actually come back to this whiskey a lot. I just think everyone is different and it’s not about the whiskey everyone likes it’s about what you like and how you like to drink it.. I’m usually sipping this after a couple decent pours of some Eagle Rare or simply some Buffalo Trace.. And that’s only because I tend to hoard the hell outta that stuff because it’s hard to find even in southern Ohio.. So unless it’s a Irish whiskey night for me Devils cut is definitely in the rotation on a regular for me.. 👍🏻
Sounds like a magnificent bastard from a certain tribe, I was starting to think I was the only one lol
I bought a bottle of Devil's Cut from a store that was going out of business. It was on clearance for $16.
I wish I had just set my $16 on fire.
Lol, that’s the review right here. I should have just filmed this
@@Brewzle
Can we drink this whiskey on the rocks ?
Lol. Devils cut when it was new was insane. It was like drinking fire. Now its just good
Oh how adorable, a whiskey snob.
@@censored7881 I think it's good
This is my favorite Bourbon right now... though Michter's Bourbon has been edging in. Micter's is a nice, bright contrast to the darker, nuttier, oakier, charred barrel flavours in Devil's Cut. Personally, I think Devil's Cut easily beats Wild Turkey 101, Maker's Mark, Buffalo Trace, & Sill Austin Cask Strength.
I believe by "extra aged" they are referring to the Black Label Jim Beam.
The song again one of the many reason why I watch your channel , you never know what ole brewzle is gonna give you. Lol keep it coming my man.
RE: "Extra Aged" - regular Jim Beam while label is aged 4 years. The old Jim Beam Black used to be aged 8 years (had it front and center on the label) and they referred to it as "Double Aged". To increase production, they reduced the aging from 8 to 6 years. They re-labelled Jim Beam Black as "Extra Aged" since 6 years is longer than 4 years but not double of 4 years. So maybe they're blending this with Jim Beam Black.
I am absolutely new to whiskey and bourbon, but I really enjoy the devils cut. I bought a bottle of black aged beam and it tastes JUST like a slightly milder version of devils cut so I would agree 100% with you that they cut it with black aged.
I've just kinda started into the world of whiskey and bourbon. I've watched several of your videos and so far devils cut is my favorite of the very few whiskeys I've tried. For you to grade it so low kind of gives hope that I'll find something I enjoy even more. I love the harshness this one has compared to Jack or the white label or the black aged beam. It's a very strong flavor I agree, but I actually enjoy it.
For the price I give it a thumbs up 👍🏽
Ive been subscribed for a few months now. Haven't really backpedaled into older content, but had to see your take on the DC. Every complaint you had about it is every reason i come back to it 😆. Flavor comes on strong and fast, and then disappears quickly. I will occasionally mix this with Dr Pepper, but mostly neat. If im feeling fancy, I'll have it on the rocks and enjoy a cheap cigar. This here is probably my favorite shooting whiskey
My assumption would be that they soak the barrels in water to extract the whisky and then distill it again to make it the correct strength
Interesting theory
Why bother
vacuum chamber. they do a few hundred barrels at a time. it rains dark whiskey in the room.
Darn, that was awesome! Great original rendition of Jim Beam went down and bamboozled us all over the States but also in Georgia.....ohh the marketing!!! 🤣
Maker’s Mark does the same thing with their barrels. Empty barrels filled with water and left in a warm warehouse for a month. The water imbued with the whiskey that was trapped in the wood is used to dilute the barrel-strength whiskey before bottling.
Personally I enjoy the devils cut more than orginal jim beam I'd put it up there with jack Daniel's not gentleman's cut or single barrel but it's not a horrible whiskey for the price point
Love the Freestyle, it was fire 🔥
Thank you, lol!
@@Brewzle def some skill there my man, haha. I don't drink whiskey but LOVE the channel. I'm a beer guy myself but keep up the interesting entertaining videos. Love when you go hunting for bottles!!!!
When this first was released, I was on a tour at Jim Beams Distillery, while in our group, 2 older gentlemen were talking about when there worked there they would put some water in a just dumped barrel and roll it out into the sun for the day. Then they would pour it out and drink it. The tour guide never told us how the Bourbon is extracted from the barrel, it's proprietary. I have drank a couple of these bottles, it's good, but not great. I put it as more of a novelty bourbon.
Actually, the method of pouring water in a used cask and keeping it there for some time is an old way of making cheap low-quality booze in poor neighborhoods:) It is called swish. And swish can be unhealthy and even dangerous because it may contain methanol)))
@@hammer911tube pretty accurate description of the taste.
Most now put water in the barrel after it’s been dumped to get the last of the alcohol out. Then that water/bourbon mix is used to Proof down the bourbon.
Spot on review. I tried this when it was first released and found it very disappointing.
I remember my first (and last) experience with Jim Beam. I vomited violently for most of a day and slept for 16 hours.
That'd be a sight to see. A HUGE press machine trying to wring out all that the barrel has soaked up. I think that there could be a couple of methods of extracting. First, it could be as simple as reusing a barrel, which would be unlikely, but my theory is the spirit that isn't to whatever standard they have for bottling is repurposed or re-aged back into the barrel. Or, as the empty barrels dry out the alcohol that saturated the barrel will evaporate and condense. So I guess that is the condensate that is kept then blended with that not up to standard spirit and aged.
i had many bottles the only thing i like about it is it's 90 proof and the price is close to the white label
They use water, agitation and heat to basically sweat the liquid out of the walls of the wood. Then blend it back to what was dumped. They blend it because if you taste it extracted it's very extremely woody and almost too bitter.
so they basically proof down the bourbon with that water? seems kinda dumb just for this specific kind unless jim beam sells a lot of these bottles.
I got a bottle of this for free once, £20 for a bottle at ASDA went to the checkout with the bottle and the cashier took the bottle off somewhere to take the tag off.
When she came back she didn’t charge me it was around 2am so I don’t know if she was tired or what.
My guess for the extraction procces is just chilling it to make wood fibers contract and sqeeuze out the bourbon that way
Nice job on the jingle man. !!🤙
I use to like Jim beam when it was an American owned company
I'm not surprised with this one
Video quality has greatly improved!
Loving thesea
Glad you like them!
Devil's Cut definitely is NOT better regular Jim Beam. I can actually drink and enjoy that a bit.
Jim Beam is well Jim Beam. I cant tell any difference from this and reg Jim beam. Its a money making gimmick. Your scoring of this product spot on. Id like to see you try some Parkers Bourbon, there was a time it was my favorite for reasons I no longer understand. Weird how we change over time
Thank you! I will keep an eye out for Parkers Bourbon!
That was a pretty good song make up good shit man
A lot of distilleries add a bit of water to the barrel after it’s been dumbed and use that bourbon/water mix to proof down the bourbon. Pretty sure barrel extract is just a similar process.
I agree with the sentiment that they shouldn't have blended it. Sell little 200ml bottles or something, let me taste the barrel.
We try a bunch of different whiskey and I like bourbon but my two favorites that I would like to see you do a review on are Jameson black label and Tullamore D.E.W. 12 year ( kind of a purplish label on it)
As a mixer with a 5% bigger kick than a regular Beam or Evan Williams that gives me a nice bourbon kick, it feels like a bargain. Especially when it goes on sale because folks don't appreciate it and it ends up less money than either of those. Not as sweet as Evan, more kick than regular Jim Beam at a lower price. Makes me stock up on a few bottles for a decent proof mixer with some flavour.
Cheers.
DJ Brewzle coming to a soundcloud near you!
Some how the harnessed and multiplied to flavor of new leather boots that finish with banana 5 minutes after you decide you don't want another sip.
I've had a couple of fingers of this tonight for the first time. It's a good budget whiskey. It has its place. Does anyone else get notes of White Rain hair spray during nosing?
I'll be a son of a bitch! Lonnie Meadows!? The answer is yes, I do.
You know what ...I actually like this bourbon for its price range but my God if this post didn't make me take a sniff and holy shit it does 😅😂🤣... I don't know if this is going to ruin this whiskey for me or not lol...at the very least it will always remind me of my younger days and the girls I dated that used that shit 💯%
My great grand dad would take the empty barrels and put them up in the barn. In the heat, the bourbon would pool up in the barrel, and my dad and his twin brother would have a drink.
It seems the Gimmicks are what selling whiskey is all about now...
Okay, so let's say I want a really cheap bourbon. Should I get this, regular Jim Beam, or Benchmark?
Don’t get any get something better
Benchmark is great
Oh man, I like it.
love this whiskey
Tiktok brought me here! Love the content TJ!
you sould try Jim Beam double oak
I wanna see you play the fiddle!
Do Jim beams red stag
It’s a good Coca Cola mixer if you’re looking for something not as quite as sweet as Jack, or Evan.
I’ve heard this is very good Siri you telling me it’s not any good
I am not a fan of Jim Beam so have never purchased this whiskey and doubt I will ever feel the need
“Fricken” said TJ
Just tastes like regular Beam to me. I've had it. Mix it with coke makes a decent drink. Definitely nothing to write home about.
Review sounds like I’d expect it to taste. For cheap whiskey, I’d rather buy Benchmark or George Dickel no.12.
I think that you could call your fans brewskis! 😏
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 love your music
They use a wizard...expecto extracto
they prob put the barrels in a real chilled room so the wood pushes out the liquid in the walls, we all know they arent destroying the barrels to get to it haha
Ive had some fantastic devils cut, some boring, some harsh as hell... its a swing n miss. Sometimes its a beautiful sweet whiskey flavor with a nice deep wood tone. Or it can just taste like generic jim beam.
Jim Beam likely crushes their barrels to prevent other companies from buying those barrels to make a better product with.
6yrs old
It's not just the terrible taste that makes Devil's Cut special, it's the horrific corpse flatulence and mousse-like whisky shits.
This tastes like 90 proof Beam with a nasty, bitter aftertaste. The only way I can stomach Devil's Cut is if I have something truly awful beside it.
100% great review the devils cut is pretty bad
Yeah just tried it, not a fan.
何故 ちょっと良いだけのジムビームなのか?
安いからでは?
I just bought one and tasted it today and god was it awful lol, maybe just me but i rather drink wild turkey
Never again with this bottle or any alcohol for me. I drank this bottle and went to jail true story now I am out on bail and have to go back to court and have zero recollection what even happened.
When they call it "Devil's cut" it really is the devil.
U drank an entire fifth what did you expect
Nope not harsh. Its just not that good. Your devil went down to Georgia was an 8 outta 10
Thanks for telling us right away in the first minute that you don't have a real clue what process Jim uses to make this. Your title is misleading. Goodbye after 40 seconds in.
They put water in the emptied barrel and use that water to cut the bourbon down to drinking proof
I tried it, hated it, made it I to BBQ sauce.
This is not good bourbon, but your reviews are so flawed. Rate it as it is a $30 dollar whiskey. Don't compare it to rare, allocated and expensive. You have personality in your videos, but nothing you say holds weight. Hey... It's your channel...so...whatever. But FYI...you will never be taken seriously in the bourbon community. You might get some ticktok views tho 🤣😂🤣
Tasted like freshly cut wood. No thanks
Its terrible tried it .
Its BS
Basically, like the white label, not worth the money...
I’ve been drinking bourbon for about a month and beam tastes like water to me
