  • Visit Sudan and the lands of ancient Nubia from the comfort of your easy chair! As you make plans for a return to travel, join OI tour leader Emily Teeter as she guides us from Khartoum to Abu Simbel, a route traveled by OI founder James Henry Breasted. Along the way, Emily opens up the reality of traveling in Sudan and explains how the history is an impressive way to experience the ancient cultures that shape the landscape. This tour revisits the OI's 2018 trip, and anticipates our 2020 tour: The Ultimate Nile, Khartoum to Cairo.
The OI Armchair Travelers series is designed to give you a taste of OI tours. Led by academics, OI tours bring you up close to the ancient world. Traveling with the OI gives you unparalleled behind the scenes access, and the opportunity to experience the sites while examining current fieldwork. Wonderful presentation. This is the most extensive and educational lecture I have ever watched on Sudan. I am planning to spend time in Sudan soon...and your explanation of the sites and the history of Sudan was both educational and inspiring to say the least.
    Thank you Emily Teeter.

Reading the history of the exploration of the Nile also provides some fascinating accounts of Sudan from the perspective of geography but also the traditional practices of the Sudanese people.
I also must mention that it's an absolute travesty what is going on in Sudan as of April 2023.
Hoping for peace for a great country.

Would have loved to see Kerma as well. Really cool and distinct architecture of the early layers contemporaneous with Old Kingdom

I recommend the Hollywood movie "Khartoum" with Charlton Heston playing Gordon and Laurence Olivier giving a very eccentric performance as the Mahdi (channeling Othello on steroids) - it's a blast!

Im just reading about the history of that period in Sudan but had no idea there was a movie made and with such big name Hollywood actors. Thx for the reference. Sounds fun.

Thus was way to much like visiting relatives and having to sit through teir foto presentation of their last vacation. Not a lecture nor informative
